Europes Winter Intense

Europe is getting slammed by winters worst. Snow and cold has killed 7 in the Czech Republic, four in Croatia and two in Serbia over the past week. Temperatures reached 15F and more than a meter of snow has fallen in southern and southeastern Europe. Kiev, Ukraine saw a month worth of snow in just a few days...and it is only December, 13th!

Snow cover (Dec 12) Snow now covers Europe from eastern France into Germany, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine. Some of the deepest accumulations are near the Alps into the Balkans and Ukraine but it remains snowless as of yesterday across the Southeast of the Ukraine and Russias southern district. The Caspian Sea region has some snow but the lower Volga Valley into the N Caucasus remained snow-less and for another few days susceptible to cold (major winter wheat region). Snow is now expected to soon cover this region, too.

Russias winter wheat in the south is mostly snow free but snow and more moisture is on the way.

Russias greatest winter wheat producing region in the southern district remains snowfree (map above). This region for a few more days will be susceptible to any extreme cold. For the first 10 days of December, temperatures were excessively mild, averaging +5 degrees C above normal and the moisture only covered 1/3 the region. Deep soil moisture is lacking across much of the southern Volga into Russias southern district. Warmth and recent moisture has benefited the region.

The cold air will linger north of theregion as temperatures over the next week will be normal to warmer than normal over 1/2 of the area and slightly below normal in the north. The brutally cold air will remain farther north and east.

The next week will be very wet and stormy across the eastern Ukraine, parts of the lower Volga and most of the southern district into the northern Caucasus.
