Many factors make up a healthy community. Some of the major indicators include high school graduation rates, economic stability, physical activity, prevention of injuries, and access to health care, affordable healthy food and a clean environment. For the benefit of our shared community, some of KRCB programming will shine a spotlight on these societal issues and remedies. Health Connections programs are aired in the belief that knowledge is power, and working together we can make our community one of the healthiest in the nation. Two programs we are airing this month deal with end of life issues. For those of us dealing with ailing or aging loved ones, these programs will be of pertinence and comfort.

In an intimate and revealing film, Lynch helps makes sense of the ways Americans cope with death, grief, and life. Through the intimate stories of families coming to terms with grief, mortality, and a funerals rituals, the film illuminates the heartbreak and beauty in the journey taken between the living and the dead when someone dies.

Teacher John Hunters World Peace Game is a 7 hands-on political simulation exercise in which students tackle real-world military, economic and environmental issues. The 9- and 10-year-olds divide into groups, including nation states, the World Bank, United Nations officials, indigenous peoples and even arms dealers. Working together, while also balancing the interests of their own nations, they attempt to achieve global prosperity with the least amount of military intervention. As fun and engaging as the game it profiles, World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements provides an inspirational look at the lasting impact of one wise and caring teacher on his students and, potentially, the world.

Power Poll
Donnie Fowler, Clean Tech Strategist; Loren Kaye, President, California Foundation for Commerce and Education; Dave Metz, Pollster, FM3. Do Americans consider the environment and clean energy when they vote for politicians? Conventional thinking says even environmentalists cast ballots based on the economy and delivery of government services that directly affect their lives. That explains why some politicians privately acknowledge concern about the changing climate but dont utter the word in public. Theres little political advantage in doing so. What numbers are Republicans and Democrats considering? How does campaign funding fit into the equation? This discussion with three experts on energy and public opinion will look at the public attitudes underneath the debate about Americas energy future.
Political Science
Michael Mann, Professor of Geosciences, Penn State, author, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars; Katharine Hayhoe, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, Texas Tech University; Terry Root, Senior Fellow, Woods Institute for the Environment, Stanford University. How did climate science become so politicized? Just a few years ago, Senators John McCain and Lindsay Graham were among conservatives who accepted the basic physics of heat trapping gases and the need to decouple carbon pollution from economic growth. Today, many candidates claim the science is unsettled and scientists are the targets of smear campaigns.
James Hansen
James Hansen (rt), Head, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Adjunct Professor, Columbia Universitys Earth Institute, author, Storms of My Grandchildren. NASA climatologist James Hansen has grown increasingly concerned about the risks of climatic tipping points, which could bring catastrophic consequences. His recent research also is identifying human fingerprints on specific instances of extreme weather, putting him out in front of many of his peers. There is a yawning gap between what scientists understand and what the public knows. Hansen is the recipient of the 2012 Stephen Schneider Award for Climate Science Communication, a $10,000 award in memory of the late great Stanford climate scientist and former member of the Climate One Advisory Council. At the end of the program, climate scientist Ben Santer will present Hansen with the award for his achievements.

Against the Grain: The Year Mother Nature Struck Back
Sunday, January 6 at 2 pm This powerful film depicts the plight of todays American farmers and their struggles with extreme weather during one of the worst droughts since the dust bowl. Produced by Emmy Award-winning documentarians, the dramatic special chronicles how farm families overcome extraordinary odds every year to harvest the best crops possible to feed the nation and the world. American farmers who help feed the world are struggling like never before, said Al Kluis, commodities broker and grain marketing columnist for Successful Farming magazine. They are battling heat waves, flooding and dangerously high winds. Mother nature is at war with the American farmer. Kluis worked with Emmy Award-winning producers Robb Weller and Gary Grossman and industry marketing veteran Harold Weitzberg to develop a show concept that would let the public see the high-risk life of real farmers. Against The Grain tells the stories of U.S. farmers and farm communities facing three entirely different weather disasters all within the same year: drought, tornado, and extreme flooding. The public has little awareness of how food and fuel comes from the fields to the table and pump, says Executive Producer and Creator Harold Weitzberg. As America is again caught in the grips of an unprecedented drought and extreme weather that seriously impacts food and fuel prices, our special provides an opportunity to meet the people who are fighting the forces that are against the grain. Added Weller, Bringing this story forward has been tremendously meaningful as a producer and a story-teller. This is reality television at its best.

NASA climatologist James Hansen joins Climate One founder Greg Dalton (rt) to discuss recent wild weather, communicating climate change to the younger generation, climate change in politics, human fingerprints on Superstorm Sandy, and inspiring action.
Over the past decade climate science has become increasingly politicized. Today many candidates claim the science is unsettled and scientists are the targets of smear campaigns. Climate scientists who have taken on public roles cope with personal threats, hacking attacks and assaults on their professional integrity.
People from many religious traditions are acting as stewards of creation by working to make houses of worship more efficient and sustainable. This includes incandescent light bulbs and new caulk around those drafty stained glass windows.
Today, items from hand soap to tomatoes are labeled as eco-friendly or sustainable, but if everything is green, nothing really is. At a time when addressing global sustainability challenges is a priority for many brands, how do companies engage and motivate consumers who have green fatigue?
Activist Bill McKibben says energy companies already have five times as much oil, coal and natural gas on their books as climate scientists think is safe to burn. Oil industry veteran John Hofmeister says environmental measures driven too quickly will only backfire as the inconvenience or cost meets grass roots resistance.

Heavenly Sight - Blind Gospel Musicians
Saturday, January 19 at 1 PM A surprising number of blind African American singers came up from the gospel tradition to influence not just sacred music, but blues, bluegrass, and popular music up to and beyond rock and roll. In addition to The Blind Boys and Ray Charles, lesser known performers like Flora Molton, who survived by singing on the streets of Washington, DC and became an anti-war activist, and Reverend Gary Davis whose holy blues influenced Ry Cooder and Bob Dylan, made their contributions to American music. While their fans saw them as mystical larger-than-life figures, these performers spent much of their energy just trying to survive in a sighted world. In the Black church, blindness has always carried a special gift. Blind Willie Johnson, Reverend Gary Davis, Arizona Dranes, Blind Willie McTell, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, The Blind Boys of Alabama: all have had a unique role in giving American song its soul. Writer and host Dave Marash spent years researching documents, graphics and photographs, unearthing rare archival sound from the Library of Congressand from little-known commercial sources, to produce this public radio documentary, Heavenly Sight. The January first edition of Flashback is all about beginningsalbum beginnings. This first-of-the-year program will consist entirely of opening tracks, Side One, Cut One, from a star-studded list of performers. Among them, you can expect to hear from The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival (rt), Gram Parsons, The Rolling Stones, Steve Miller Band, Jefferson Airplane and selected other notables. Let Flashback help get your 2013 off to a rousing start, Tuesday, January 1 at 7 pm.

Sonoma States School of Business and Economics
There can be no doubt that we live in a world dominated by the is - iPhone, iPad, iPod, iBooks, etc. For the School of Business and Economics, it is not a set of trendy iGadgets or iSoftware that characterizes our work, but rather a set of time-honored is involvement, innovation, and impact. Involvement speaks to the perspective of boundary-less organizationsan idea first implemented by Jack Welch at GEthat breaks down barriers between an organization and its stakeholders. Innovation is at the core of who we are. Why? Because when you study business and economics, you learn to appreciate the intangible spark that recognizes an opportunity and creates something in response to it. Impact recognizes the business discipline of delivering results. Ultimately, we are accountable to deliver results for our stakeholdersour students, our community, our employees, youlike any other well run enterprise. In 2011-2012 the involvement of 80 community members at our annual Stakeholder Summit generated business leader involvement in our classes to teach our students the core skills employers seek. The innovation of our students the led to the launch of the PetAlUMA first-ever Sonoma State wine brand. As for impact, in 2012 our Wine Business Institute was recognized as A ReAdeRs Monthly the global leader for wine business education and research.
