RENSSELAER COUNTY DAIRY PRINCESS ARTICLE- I have always had Jerseys, but my second choice in the breeds of dairy cattle is the Milking Shorthorn. They are not one of the most popular breeds, but I have enjoyed the breed through the years. My one and only Shorthorn is a cow named Zoey, she is big a deep red cow who loves to be the boss. They are known for their docile temperament with a long production life. They have good quality milk, are resistance to many different diseases, and have great ease in calving. The breed is known for their dual purpose of use for a milk or meat animal. Which means the breed can be raised to be beef cow for meat production or a dairy cow for milk production. Shorthorns are an average size cow weighing 1400 to 1600 pounds, they are all-red, red with white markings, all-white, or red roan, and come in a variety shades of red. The milking shorthorn is one the oldest breeds of cattle, they originated in Great Britain. They are one of my favorite breeds of cattle; I have enjoyed showing Zoey through the years. Zoey always did well at shows, these days she spends in her days at local dairy farm with many other cows. She is one of the only Shorthorns on the farm and enjoys being a little different from the other cows. If youre interested in learning about Public Relations, Special Occasion Speeches, or any of the thirteen other manuals in Toastmasters Advanced Communication Series, we invite you to join us at the Annex II Building, next to the Washington County Cornell Cooperative Extension Building, 415 Lower Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY, on first and third Wednesdays at 7:00PM.
