PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS

After the customer needs have been identified, our group has to set the target specifications related to the customer needs. At this stage, we have to describe the measurable detail about what the product has to do to be commercially successful. In the previous content, we already state some of the aspects that we consider to meet customer needs based on questionnaire and observation. Usually, the target specifications must be refined after a product concept has been selected. This is because some of the target may fail to meet some of the specifications and may exceed others, depend on the selection of the product concept.

Table above represents the relationship between needs and metrics. The rows of the matrix correspond to the customer needs, and the columns of the matrix correspond to the metrics. It is shown that there is a mark in every cell. The mark means that the need and the metric associated with the cell are related which is the performance relative to the metric will influence the degree to which the product satisfies the customer needs. For example, the metrics of the total mass of the product will have an effect on the weight of the product. We can say that if the total mass of this product is only about 300 grams, so, it means that this product is lightweighted. As we can see in the table above, power storage capacity and charging time will give effect to the customer needs for number 2. To make the devices completely charged, it takes some time and also the amount of the power storage involves. Same as the others, any metrics that have influence to the needs, there will be marks among them. The relationship the needs and metrics is a central to the entire concept of specifications. We can simple says that if there is no list of metrics, we cannot identify what is the real customer needs of our product.
