1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).

An example of this is things like the use of performance scenes in a metal video, which stereotypically use very dark colours to present a typically gothic feel, with colour being used to differentiate the narrative scenes. In my deconstructions, this is demonstrated in, for example, The Ballad of Mona Lisa through a kind of performance narrative. It is clear that you can see a gothic feel to the video, and the use of performing within the narrative gives the video a unique effect. 2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting). The link between lyrics and visuals is usually clear in most videos, and are as simple as the narrative following a story similar to the lyrics of the song. This is not always clear, however the video usually shows some reference to the lyrics. In Everlong, this is shown through mainly, the miming of the main character. The other significant fact relating the lyrics to the video is the actual plotline in the video, which relates to the lyrics and meaning of the song. 3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting). Examples of this come as things like mise-en-scene and lighting, in which the colours can reflect the mood and feel of the video. However, this is also relevant with things such as effects and transitions, meaning the timings of videos can affect the relationship between music and visuals. Again, in Everlong, this is demonstrated through the use of actions, for example the hacking of an axe matches the escalation of the drumbeat. This relates the action of the video to the music itself.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style). This is necessary because of the fact the music video is to primarily promote the artist and their song. Close-ups of the artist mean people can recognise and familiarise themselves with the artist, and it also gives the artist their own sense of style from what is done in the close up, you can see sides of that artists personality, so you get a taste for how they feel about their music. The promotion of the artist will also affect the Record label The more music the artist sells, the more money the record label makes. Hero Of War demonstrates this effectively, especially in the performance. It is unusual that until towards the end of the video, the only face that is seen in the singers. Then, as the song reaches the outro, there are extremely quick headshots of the other band members faces. This almost seems like it has quickly been bolted on to promote the entirety of the band.

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages e.t.c.) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. The reference to notion of looking reflects the humanity, and emotion through the artists reflection. Using this, psychological effects can be used to reflect personality. The use of female body usually portrays a sexual image, most likely because it draws males into watching the video, promoting it even more. As an example, in The Ballad Of Mona Lisa, there is a hallucinatory effect that appear to look like 3 cut off reflections, tailing the main character. This portrays the idea of a screen within a screen. There is also a scene with a mirror being covered, however this lacks reflection. This gives off a concealed kind of effect; that the reflection is not wanted. 6. There are often intertextual references (to films, tv programmes, other music videos e.t.c.) The intertextual references are also used because they are now almost a commercial icon. People tend to be attracted to things they recognise from

references to television and films, and other music videos, mainly because it induces a sense of familiarity, attracting them even more. Its also because the reference to popular media are hard to avoid they have become such a trend that sometimes, they are necessary for music videos. In Everlong, one of the most noticable references is the hacking down of the door with the axe, which is extremely similar to the famous scene in The Shining, which adds a comedic horror style effect to the narrative. There are also stereotypical genre references, for example, the punk attire worn in the party scene.
