Managing the Learning Environment

Context/Situation: The student repeats a lot of what is said to her. When people say Hi K she will repeat Hi K back to them. Sometimes people will say hi to her and she will stare at them and say nothing back. Operational Definition: K will say hi to people when they greet her. She will say hi by saying just hi or hi ________ and filling in the blank with the proper persons name. She will not repeat hi K to the person or just look at them. Baseline Data: In the baseline, shown in the chart below, data was taken on how many times K responded appropriately to a greeting when presented to her. These were instances only, in which I was present to record. On most days she greeted people by saying hi ________ on less than half the opportunities presented to her. In most cases she appropriately greeted the same person (one of the aides) and he was the only person she actually greeted.

Proposed Intervention: - Desired Outcomes: K will be expected to greet people when they say hi to her by saying the persons name or just saying hi. Every morning before the school day starts K will be reading a social story about saying. This will help her understand the expectations of saying hi to her friends at school and how it makes them feel when she says hi. - Antecedent Strategies: After someone says hi to K she will be expected to reciprocate the greeting. If after five seconds K does not respond she will be presented with a visual prompt to indicate she needs to respond. This visual prompt will start off as a larger say hi card and will fade to be a smaller card with no words, just the picture. No verbal prompting will be used to get K to say hi, it will all be visual. - Consequence Strategies: K will be rewarded to saying hi by placing a star on her Velcro board. After achieving a designated amount of stars on her board she will be allowed to go buy a pop from the vending machine. She will start off by having 100% success on the first day, so she will only need to receive one star in order to get a pop. This way she will understand that if she says hi appropriately she will be rewarded and she wont resist saying hi in the future. This will then fade to needing to get three stars and then needing to get five stars. After she is successful with

getting five stars for a week she will then be rewarded with stars every other day and then to once a week. Data Collection: Data will be collected throughout the entire school day using the attached data sheet. The initial column on the line is for whomever is working with K during that period of the day. She will receive a check for either saying hi or hi_________ along with her star or she will receive a check for saying hi K or no response. Each class hour has its own row so we can determine when she is responding.
