Tin plate

Introduction There are two types of thin-gauge steel: Tin plate Chromium-plated steel They are suitable for use in many manufacturing processes and in sectors as varied as packaging, automotive components, the building trade and domestic appliances. Properties Tin plate is characterised by its thin gauge, between 0.13 and 0.49 mm. Tinning is carried out by a continuous electrolytic process. Advantages The specific features of tin plate are its thin gauge combined with mechanical properties that cover a wide range (from 230 to 620 MPa). This makes it suitable for use in many forming processes and in many different sectors. The tin plate range is divided into several innovative surface finishes (3 different levels of roughness). Finally, tin plate, like all other types of steel, is very easy to recycle in accordance with environmental protection requirements. Applications Thin-gauge steel (including tin plate) is particularly suitable for use in the packaging industry, but there are also many non-packaging applications, such as: Automotive components: oil filters, cylinder head gaskets etc Building trade: space bars for double glazing, false ceiling rails, light reflectors, radiator fins, reinforced tape etc In the home: cake tins, gas canister components etc Electrical and electronic equipment: batteries, electrical components etc Regulations and standards For products intended for electrical and electronic equipment, ArcelorMittal complies with European Directives 2002/95/EC (RoHS) and 2002/96/EC (WEEE). For products intended for packaging, ArcelorMittal complies with European Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste. For products intended for food contact, ArcelorMittal complies with Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, and also with European Standard EN 10333:2005. All steels comply with standard EN 10202:2001, which deals with the technical characteristics of the product.

Tin plate
Formability Thanks to its mechanical properties, which cover a wide range, tin plate is suitable for use in many forming processes, in particular: Deep drawing Some types of tin plate display excellent deep-drawing behaviour thanks to a high Lankford coefficient (or coefficient of anisotropy) associated with low in-plane anisotropy, which ensures near-identical behaviour irrespective of the orientation of the deformation in relation to the rolling direction. Expansion, embossing, beading Tin plate is well suited to mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic expansion. Its expansion capacity by pneumatic or hydraulic means can be up to 30%. Bending, rolling Due to its high level of ductility (for steel with low mechanical properties) and its near-isotropic properties, tin plate can withstand severe bending or rolling. Recommendations for use Cutting Tin plate is well suited to shearing (guillotine) and punching. Joining Several joining techniques may be used for tin plate, such as riveting, stapling and welding (particularly resistance seam welding). Lacquering and printing Tin plate can be lacquered in sheets or in coils. Adhesion is particularly good with organosols and acrylics, but many other types of lacquer are also suitable (epoxy-phenolics, polyesters, vinylics etc). Sheet printing produces a high quality of detail and colour. Using anamorphic techniques, flat printing can be carried out before forming. Firing temperatures must not exceed 210C. There must be no or minimum oiling before lacquering in order to prevent wetting problems with the lacquer.
