Series Pipe System

Environmental En Dep.-Hydraulics ng.

EXAMPLE 1:

Environmental En Dep.-Hydraulics ng.

Given is a three-pipe series system, is in Fig. The total pressure drop is pA -pB =150,000 Pa, and the elevation drop is zA - zB = 5 m. The pipe data are

The fluid is water =1000 kg/m3 and =1.02x10-6 m2/s. Calculate the flow rate Q in m3 /h through the system

Parallel Pipe System

Environmental En Dep.-Hydraulics ng. Environmental En Dep.-Hydraulics ng. A certain part of cast iron piping of a water distribution system involves a parallel section. Both parallel pipes have a diameter of 30 cm, and the flow is fully turbulent. One of the branches (pipe A) is 1000 m long while the other branch (pipe B) is 3000 m long. If the flow rate through pipe A is 0.4 m3/s, determine the flow rate through pipe B. Disregard minor losses and assume the water temperature to be 15C. Show that the flow is fully turbulent, and thus the friction factor is independent of Reynolds number

A Three Reservoir System

Environmental En Dep.-Hydraulics ng.

EXAMPLE 3:
Environmental En Dep.-Hydraulics ng.

Three reservoirs are y pp connected by three pipes as are shown in the Figure. For simplicity we assume that the diameter of each pipe is 0.3048 m, the friction factor for each is 0.02, and because of the large length-tolength to diameter ratio, minor losses are negligible. Determine the flowrate into or out of each reservoir

Elevation =30.48 m

(1)

D1= 0.3048 m l1=304.8 m

D2= 0.3048 m l2=152 4 m =152.4

Elevation = 6.0960m

D3= 0.3048 m l3=121.92 m

(2) (3)
Elevation = 0m
