OLD but a goody:

PeopleTools 8.52, starting to look like Fusion Applications 6/15/2011

The Release Value Proposition for PeopleTools 8.52 has been posted on metalink. This realese of PeopleTools introduces and extends current PeopleTools technology that look and behave more and more like Fusion Applications. With this version the transition or fusion of PeopleSoft customers to Fusion Applications will be more streamlined. In this post I will highlight some of the new features of PeopleTools 8.52 PeopleSoft Application Search PeopleSoft Application Search is a group of features that offers an improved means of searching for application content, business objects and business process steps within a PeopleSoft application. These capabilities provide users with access to more powerful, keyword-based search components that present a familiar, more intuitive search experience. Instead of browsing through menu hierarchies to find a component, menu item, application data, or transaction, users can use PeopleSoft ApplicationSearch to directly navigate to desired application data or transactions. Similar to how you might initiate navigation across the internet by first searching for a set of keywords, PeopleSoft Application Search allows application users to initiate steps of a business task with a simple, intuitive keyword search. This capability may reduce or even eliminate the need to navigate PeopleSoft applications using the existing application menu system. Inter-Pagelet Communication and Interactive Pagelets Inter-pagelet communication fundamentally changes the way in which WorkCenters, Dashboards, application homepages, portals, and PeopleSoft Pure Internet Architecture (PIA) pages can bedesigned and constructed. It enables a more interactive and Web 2.0 style of design, where user actions in one pagelet can affect and be reflected in the content in another pagelet. PeopleSoft pagelets can communicate with each other by allowing key fields to publish their values to other pagelets and frames. This new capability allows application page developers to construct PeopleSoft applications in a manner that will give users a much more comprehensive and interactive view of inter-related data. Related Content Enhancements The PeopleTools 8.52 release provides the following new capabilities and options for the Related Content framework:

Related content frames can now optionally appear on the right-side of the page or at the bottom ofthe page. When displayed on the right side, related content services appear as individual pagelets rather than tabs, and any number of pagelets can be open at once. This functionality enables users to view and interact with multiple services at once. Each related content pagelet can be scrolled. Display actions permit users to refresh or minimizepagelets, or pop them open in their own window should more screen space be needed. Minimized pagelets can then be maximized when needed. Users can configure where related content is displayed, and the frame can still be displayed at the bottom of the page in contexts where doing so is preferable or improves the display of information.

Related actions can be grouped into folders for better organization. Users can enable or disable services for easy control of the services displayed, without the need to delete or remove them from the menu structure. Content references from remote nodes can be consumed as services. Homepage pagelets can be used as related content, allowing reuse of these pagelets in conjunction with transactional pages.

WorkCenters and Dashboards In PeopleTools 8.52 WorkCenter pages have been enhanced in two main ways: The left-hand navigation area has been enhanced for greater usability, and users can now associate any homepage pagelet with a WorkCenter. These enhancements increase the amount of content that can be used in WorkCenter pages.Dashboards can now be configured using a wizard-like tool by business analysts. This obviates using administrative tools in PeopleTools. Both WorkCenters and Dashboards also leverage the interactive pagelets and inter-pagelet communication features, which enable configuration and deployment of functionally rich, highly usable applications. Charting Enhancements The Organization Chart feature has been updated with several enhancements to allow users to interact more extensively with organizational charts. These new intuitive and simple-to-use capabilities include:

Zoom levels have been added to allow more or less data to be displayed. Instant messaging (IM) presence indicators are now available in organization chart nodes. Additional flexibility is available for node content design and display. The Actions List dropdown list is improved to allow the foldering of actions and the launching of PeopleTools related actions.

Oracle BI Publisher Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT) support has been added as a pre-processingstep for BI Publisher reports. Report developers may now use Oracles JDeveloper XSL Mapper, or anyXSLT tool of their choice, to generate XSLT files and apply them to selected data source xml files ahead of BI Publisher template processing. This allows developers to rename or restructure their incoming xml without modifying the actual data source in order to map their data to pre-defined templates. Pivot Grids The pivot grid is a new analytic capability that gives users the ability to quickly and easily pivot and filter data within PeopleSoft applications without having to export data to Microsoft Excel. Data for pivot grids is generated by PS Query and can be rendered in charts or analytical grids. Users can add pivot gridsto application pages or pagelets. PeopleSoft Test Framework In PeopleTools 8.52 a new recorder tool bar has been added to PTF. The recorder tool bar optimizes the test case record process by giving users the ability to quickly set variables, add documentation, screen shots and pause recording sessions. In addition, beginning with the PeopleTools 8.52 release users can export test cases to flat files, so that large volumes of test data can be edited more readily prior to importing it back into the database for playback. Change Assistant

A new three-way merge capability for PeopleCode objects is being introduced with the PeopleTools8.52 release. This new capability is an extension of Change Assistant and allows users to streamlinethe process of reviewing, analyzing and developing PeopleCode objects during an upgrade. Change Assistant users will be able to quickly and easily compare PeopleCode from three different database sand create one merged version. Users will be able to apply rules individually or in batch as they review and analyze the code before they move their code to the PeopleCode tables. PeopleTools 8.52 will also extend Change Assistant to provide a compare user interface for Managed Object Compare. This user-interface enhancement combines the Project and Upgrade tabs of Application Designer into a single view within the new user interface. Users will be able to initiate acompare, validate and/or copy a project, and filter the results to show a subset of the data. Apple iPad Browser Certification The popularity of the Apple iPad and other similar tablet devices is growing and they have found their way into the business community. PeopleTools 8.52 will be certified on the Safari browser on an iPad running version 4.2 or later. This is an exciting new user interface platform with unlimited potential for users looking to gain access to PeopleSoft application content from their mobile devices. Oracle Golden Gate A great way to extend the usable life of production hardware is to offload work to stand-by servers whenever possible. PeopleTools 8.52 enables the use of Oracle Golden Gate to provide the ability to offload read-only work from an Oracle production database to a stand-by Oracle database. PSAdmin Support for PIA PeopleTools 8.52 will provide a unified interface for managing PIA environments running on a webserver. An additional top-level menu has been added to the PSAdmin utility to manage the configuration and state of PIA domains, add new PIA domains, as well as clone or delete existing PIA domains. Oracle Identity Manager (OIM) Integration To ensure more seamless integration and interoperability between PeopleSoft and Oracle systems and products, PeopleTools will deliver a web services-based connector to take advantage of cross-version integration of web service security features. Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) Support Beginning in this release PeopleTools Encryption Technology (PET) will support the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). AES is accepted by the industry as offering the highest level of encryption protection. As part of PeopleTools support of this standard, AES-128, AES-192, and AES-256 keylengths will be supported. Application Designer Enhancements

Improved IDE when working on long pages Improvement for working with hidden frames/group boxes Find In directly from project workspace Find references capability for application packages PeopleCode Last modified in the UI of Application Designer Improved the performance of copy projects to and from files Related content and feeds are now PeopleTools managed objects so they can be added to PeopleTools projects and moved easily between PeopleSoft systems.

Authorization as a Service

A significant advancement in PeopleTools 8.52 is the new Authorization as a Service framework. The framework allows application developers to externalize the row-level or data-level security of PeopleSoft applications, and make it available as a service. Row-level security is determined at runtime and is widely used in PeopleSoft applications to ensure that users who really need to access data get the access they need. This then allows the related actions, related content services, and third-party applications that provide information relevant to a transaction to be secured using the web services provided by this new framework. The new framework is modeled such that the authorization logic developed for use with PeopleSoft Application Search indices can be reused and exposed as a service.

Peopletools 8.52 : get your infrastructure ready

It has been discussed several times during the last Oracle Open World 2-6 oct. 2011, Peopletools 8.52 is just next to the door. It seems this version will change a lot of things, see the pre-release notes #1335812.1 and the value proposition #1327656.1. But in order to be able to run this Peopletools 8.52 version, the infrastructure needs to be up to dated. Therere indeed a couples of changes and decommissioned platforms on server as well as client side which may imply some work in front. Starting by the client : Up to Peopletools 8.51, Windows XP Pro (32bit) was certified and worked fine as a client for AppDesigner for developers. It is now ended. Not sure if it will work, but it is not planned to be certified. I know, Windows XP is quite an old OS, but still widely used. Client must be now on Windows 7, Vista (who really wants it by now ?), or Windows 2008 (honestly, I dont know many workstation on that version). Keep in mind to verify the edition. Speaking on client side, browsing is also changing a lot, a very new nice one, Apple iPad (browser Safari) will be certified ! And finally, Peoplesoft is introducing certification of Google Chrome. On server side : OS: HP-UX PA-RISC certification is now definitely ended, AIX 5.3 is also ended (7.1 added). Surprisingly, Oracle Linux 6.x is not planned to be certified (right, Oracle database is not certified yet on this Linux version), but I tend to think it will be certified soon too. Database : Oracle 11.2.0.2, 11.1.0.7 and 10.2.0.5 (10.2.0.4 and earlier is ended), probably the newly released 11.2.0.3 patchset will also be certified soon (not planned yet). Applications : they must be 8.9 or above, whereas Peopletools 8.51 was certified from within applications 8.8. WebSphere : keep in mind, that within Peopletools 8.52, WebSphere wont be provide anymore, support must be obtained from IBM to get the software. COBOL compiler : similarly to the above, Peopletools 8.52 wont come anymore with a compiler, support must be obtained from the vendor (not only Microfocus, but also IBM). Regarding these last two points, please read this roadmap. Except that Peopletools 8.50 was certified on x64 architecture only, I dont think there were so many changes on the previous 8.5x versions. So, if you want the coming soon Peopletools 8.52 and are in one of the ended certifications as describe above, prepare your infrastructure for a change. Or if thats for demo, proof of concept and/or training purpose, you can always wait for the associated Oracle VM Peoplesoft templates (well, that supposes you have a spare server in a corner for hosting Oracle VM thats an other story), but not sure how long it will take to be available. All these changes could be quite problematic if you have to deal with much older Peopletools release and Application version which require different OS on server but also on client side (Peopletools 8.48 and earlier are not certified on Windows 7). Administration tasks : Few administration tasks may also change. New variable : this could have an impact on your architecture as well, in Peopletools 8.50 has been introduced a new environment variable, PS_CFG_HOME to decouple the application/batch domain from the PS_HOME. A new one is coming within Peopletools 8.52 to separate the application installation home from the Peopletools installation home, PS_APP_HOME. It often confused new-comers in Peoplesoft world, why the application must be installed in the same folder as the Peopletools, now it is finished, we could install application where ever we want using that variable, and have multiple applications pointing to a unique Peopletools home directory. PSADMIN menu : new options to manage the PIA such as create, clone, delete, check status Active DataGuard : I hope also Peoplesoft be more integrated within Active Data Guard, as I showed in an earlier blog entry theres no Crystal, COBOL and SQR on a standby database supported. But Im quite disappointed, it does not appear to be in the pre-release notes linked above.

Peopletools 8.52 : psadmin

There are few interesting changes in the Peopletools 8.52 psadmin menu :
PeopleSoft Server Administration -------------------------------Config Home: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) q) /appl/psoft/hcm91fp1_dom

Application Server Process Scheduler Search Server Web (PIA) Server Switch Config Home Replicate Config Home Quit

Option 4 and 5 have been added compared to the previous Peopletools version. The option 5 is rather good, be able to change the PS_CFG_HOME on-line without exiting from the program. Managing different home is now greatly simplified :
Command to execute (1-6, q): 5 Please provide new Config Home location or q to quit:

The option 4, managing the PIA within the psadmin is useful if and only if the webserver is hosted on the same server.
[ptools852@orion5 appserv]$ ./psadmin PSADMIN -- Tools Release: 8.52.02 Copyright (c) 1996, 2011, Oracle. All rights reserved. -------------------------------PeopleSoft Server Administration -------------------------------Config Home: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) q) /appl/psoft/hcm91fp1_dom

Application Server Process Scheduler Search Server Web (PIA) Server Switch Config Home Replicate Config Home Quit

Command to execute (1-6, q): 4 ----------------------------PeopleSoft PIA Administration ----------------------------PIA Home: /appl/psoft/hcm91fp1_web

1) Administer a domain 2) Create a domain 3) Delete a domain

Here we can see the output of the PIA_HOME variable, if it is not set in the environment, it is set by default to PS_CFG_HOME (Config Home). Well, Im not sure how to quantify the customer having such configuration (Peopletools installed onto the webserver), but as far as I know from the shops I worked for, thats rather rare. Anyway, Ill test this

option in a coming blog entry. Theres also some new options in the psadmin command line, PIA management, delete an application domain, find out more within the command psadmin help. Find out more in the OTN hosted Peoplebooks : http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E25688_01/pt852pbr0/eng/psbooks/tsvt/book.htm?File=tsvt/htm/ts vt06.htm#H2001 Now, building a new environment for Peopletools 8.52 on Oracle Linux 6.1 (well, it is not certified yet, but looks to work like a charm), create a new application domain can return the following error :
---------------------------------------------Quick-configure menu -- domain: hcm91fp1 ---------------------------------------------Features Settings ========== ========== 1) Pub/Sub Servers : No 16) DBNAME :[hcm91fp1] 2) Quick Server : No 17) DBTYPE :[ORACLE] 3) Query Servers : No 18) UserId :[PS] 4) Jolt : Yes 19) UserPswd :[PS] 5) Jolt Relay : No 20) DomainID :[hcm91fp1] 6) WSL : No 21) AddToPATH :[.] 7) PC Debugger : No 22) ConnectID :[people] 8) Event Notification: No 23) ConnectPswd:[peop1e] 9) MCF Servers : No 24) ServerName :[] 10) Perf Collator : No 25) WSL Port :[7000] 11) Analytic Servers : No 26) JSL Port :[9000] 12) Domains Gateway : No 27) JRAD Port :[9100] Actions ========= 13) Load config as shown 14) Custom configuration 15) Edit environment settings h) Help for this menu q) Return to previous menu Enter selection (1-27, h, or q): 13 Performing load prechecks ... /appl/psoft/ptools852/bin/ubbgen: error while loading shared libraries: libtux.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory ==============ERROR!================ UBBGEN encountered an error while configuring! ==============ERROR!================

It is nothing but LD_LIBRARY_PATH not set. Adding it in the .bash_profile as below :

[ptools852@orion5 ~]$ more .bash_profile # .bash_profile # Get the aliases and functions if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then . ~/.bashrc fi # User specific environment and startup programs PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin export PATH

TUXDIR=/appl/mdlware/tuxedo; export TUXDIR ORACLE_BASE=/appl/oracle; export ORACLE_BASE ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/11.2.0; export ORACLE_HOME ORACLE_BIN=$ORACLE_HOME/bin PS_HOME=/appl/psoft/ptools852; export PS_HOME PS_CFG_HOME=/appl/psoft/hcm91fp1_dom; export PS_CFG_HOME PIA_HOME=/appl/psoft/hcm91fp1_web; export PIA_HOME LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$TUXDIR/lib; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH PATH=$TUXDIR/bin:$ORACLE_BASE:$ORACLE_HOME:$ORACLE_BIN:$PATH . $PS_HOME/psconfig.sh [ptools852@orion5 ~]$

Now, disconnect, reconnect and rerun the configuration menu, it should work :
---------------------------------------------Quick-configure menu -- domain: hcm91fp1 ---------------------------------------------Features Settings ========== ========== 1) Pub/Sub Servers : No 16) DBNAME :[hcm91fp1] 2) Quick Server : No 17) DBTYPE :[ORACLE] 3) Query Servers : No 18) UserId :[PS] 4) Jolt : Yes 19) UserPswd :[PS] 5) Jolt Relay : No 20) DomainID :[hcm91fp1] 6) WSL : No 21) AddToPATH :[.] 7) PC Debugger : No 22) ConnectID :[people] 8) Event Notification: No 23) ConnectPswd:[peop1e] 9) MCF Servers : No 24) ServerName :[] 10) Perf Collator : No 25) WSL Port :[7000] 11) Analytic Servers : No 26) JSL Port :[9000] 12) Domains Gateway : No 27) JRAD Port :[9100] Actions ========= 13) Load config as shown 14) Custom configuration 15) Edit environment settings h) Help for this menu q) Return to previous menu Enter selection (1-27, h, or q): 13 Performing load prechecks ... New CFG file written with modified Startup parameters Log Directory entry not found in configuration file. Setting Log Directory to the default... Nothing new here, it has always been like that on Linux, but thats always good to remind it. As an other side note, creating a new process scheduler domain, you also may encounter the following warning (I dont like warning, they sound like repeating error !) :
WARNING: PSDSTSRV is configured with Min instance set to 1. To avoid loss of service, configure Min instance to atleast 2.

Rather strange to have this when creating a default prcs, better to change it now, modify the configuration file $PS_CFG_HOME/appserv/prcs/hcm91fp1/psprcs.cfg and reload.

PT 8.52 - Early adopters? What has been your experience with it in Prod? Posted: Mar 3, 2012 1:30 PM Reply

After our HR upgrade to HR 9.1 and PT 8.51 in October, 2011, there is desire to turn around and do a Tools only upgrade to PT 8.52 this spring for various reasons (iPad tablet certification, etc). I remember a 2010 OpenWorld presentation where Oracle recommended that the "sweet spot" for go-live of a new Tools version was about 12-13 months after GA. I have found that advice to be sound in the real world as well. What is the general vibe of PT 8.52 in Production? What have been your experiences with 8.52? If you are in Production, are you either HR, FSCM or CRM? Thanks, Scott Edited by: Scott O on Mar 3, 2012 9:36 PM Edited by: Scott O on Mar 3, 2012 9:48 PM Hakan Biroglu Posts: 331 Registered: 06/23/11 Re: PT 8.52 - Early adopters? What has been your experience with it in Prod? Posted: Mar 4, 2012 3:05 AM in response to: Scott O Hi, Although I have only customers running on PeopleTools 8.51 and lower, I have a local sandbox running on PeopleTools 8.52.06 (release March 1th, 2012) with HCM, CRM, Portal and Financials all on 9.1. The first release was indeed quite buggy and had unpredictable behavior, with all new features like IWC, multiple attachment uploads etc. With the PeopleTools patches fixing the main bugs, the behavior of the application got more stable. And I may say the performance is excellent, although performance is always a difficult thing to tackle and is not necessary on PeopleSoft site. Also keep in mind, that all new application features get released only on PeopleTools 8.52. So if you want to make use of all the new 'cool stuff', you need to be on PeopleTools 8.52. Hope this helps. Regards, Hakan N Gasparotto Posts: 23,395 Registered: 08/22/02 Re: PT 8.52 - Early adopters? What has been your experience with it in Prod? Depending of the number of customization, it could be more or less costly to upgrade Peopletools. And if you want to follow every year Peopletools new release, then you could have a permanent project dedicated for this. Whether it's given you the latest technologies, I'm not sure it's good direction unless your database is close to the vanilla. Many shops are reluctants to upgrade their production database every year, maybe every other year is enough. More over, by the past, there were so many bugs on initial release than the first advice was to wait at least for the patch 06. So, it's becoming a business decision, if they really want/need or not some of the features from latest release and they're willing to pay, then it's all good for you. Nicolas.

We go live on 8.52 in a few weeks with HR 9.0. Had a few UI issues that are now either fixed in patch 06 or

planend for 07. Only waiting on one POC critical to go live (relates to not being able to enter 6 digit dates (ddmmyy = 230312)). We're happy with it enough tio go live at the end of this month. Posted: Mar 5, 2012 7:56 AM in response to: N Gasparotto Nick, Thanks for the feedback. We are most definitely are not vanilla and we have 10,000-15,000 customizations in PeopleSoft HR. I also read somewhere that LDAP Authentication is broken in PeopleTools 8.52 and no current fix in place. All this adds to the point that this seems to be bleeding edge right now and that we should wait for a few months. Nick - question. Can you confirm what you mean by "Vanilla Database"? Do you mean vanilla PeopleTools layer or do you mean vanilla app layer? Re: PT 8.52 - Early adopters? What has been your experience with it in Prod? Posted: Mar 12, 2012 6:35 AM in response to: Scott O Could someone please post or send the upgrade documentation you have followed?. Or please, send me an URL to the upgrade documentation. It appears that the upgrade documentation might not be complete and/or correct. The problem: Your upgrade environment has a psio_dir.dll from the previous/old PT850/PT851 install. To validate this check out the size and the date stamp of the file. It will show the year as 2009 and the size as 48KB. THE FIX: Bring down your Application Server. Remove all the cache and log files. Permanetntly REMOVE (not rename) the psio_dir.ll from $PS_HOME/\bin\server\winx86\psio_dir.dll from your PeopleSoft Application Server environment. Bring up your Application Server. If you are a developer using/doing work using Application Designer, permanently remove <PS_HOME>\bin\client\winx86\psio_dir.dll from your Application Designer machine. This should fix your problem. thanks, Subbu Note - I do not speak for Oracle. These comments are of my own. Edited by: user777436 on Mar 12, 2012 6:37 AM Reply

When users are navigating in PIA they intermittently receive Out Of Available Memory (2,-1) Errors and get kicked out of the application back to the logon screen. App server also shows these Out Of Available Memory (2,-1) Errors and causes app server crash dumps.

Resolution given in E-PC/AS: Error Out Of Available Memory (2,-1) [ID 1404585.1]

---------------------PeopleTools 8.52 - What Crystal software should you install? Posted: Mar 29, 2012 4:50 AM Reply The Install Guide for PT852 and the Crystal Troubleshooting Guide both state that no Crystal components need to be installed on the batch server. In PT 8.51 the Addendum to the Install Guide says you need the Crystal Runtime (only availalble from GSC now or SAP). Does anyone know the correct answer to this? What Crystal components should you install on your batch server in 8.52? Thanks Graham BobLilly Posts: 325 Registered: 11/26/09 Re: PeopleTools 8.52 - What Crystal software should you install? Posted: Mar 29, 2012 6:11 AM in response to: GrahamSmith Graham, In Task 15-3 of the 8.52 Install Guide for Oracle it still says "Process Scheduler servers that will be used to run Crystal Reports do not require the Crystal Reports 2008 Application to be installed, but do require that the Crystal Reports 2008 .NET Runtime be installed." Which guide/section are you referencing? Regards, Bob GrahamSmith Posts: 56 Registered: 11/20/07 Re: PeopleTools 8.52 - What Crystal software should you install? Need help to find out whether Peopletools patches need to be applied on PS_CFG_HOME also along with PS_HOME? Thanks N Gasparotto Posts: 23,395 Registered: 08/22/02 Re: Does Peopletools patches need to be applied to PS_CFG_HOME? Posted: Jan 23, 2012 5:59 AM in response to: user5838027

PS_CFG_HOME hosts only the domain configuration files (ie. psappsrv.cfg and psprcs.cfg). All the referenced files (psappsrv.cfx, psappsrv.ubx...) and binaries are hosted in PS_HOME. A Peoplesoft patch generally modifies the binaries, more rarely the referenced files. In all cases, the PS_CFG_HOME is not to be directly "patched". But you should read carefully the readme doc coming along the patch, it could require a re-configuration of the domain as well as a PIA re-deployment. Nicolas.

Also as you mentioned "PS_CFG_HOME hosts only the domain configuration files ", In case we will try to install the toolspatch...wil it affect any of the domain configuration ? this question doesnt make sense as tools patches will only update the binaries , but just out of curiosity i want to know if the tools patch on PS_CFG_HOME affect the functioning of App and batch server?
