Most women in their lifetime will contract a strain of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) at some point, with the most dangerous strain being cervical cancer. Recently the Calgary Catholic School Board lifted its ban against allowing schools to administer the HPV vaccine Gardasil to their students. Students in the Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools, of which Holy Cross Collegiate is a member, will not have the vaccine provided at the schools. The division does, however, see the decision by Calgary as a teachable moment for its own parents. At present our stance is we, along with many other Catholic school boards, we see this is as a teachable moment and we see it as an opportunity to bring this issue to our parents. Its kind of a blend of health issues and some religious teaching that we can work with the parents on and get them informed and engaged so that they can make the most intelligent decision for their child, said Scott Morrison, Associate Superintendent of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools. Its really important that the parents raise the pros and the cons and if they want to get their child vaccinated great, if not thats great too, its their business. Our stance has been that the HPV just allows us to give a teachable moment to engage our parents and have them get to know the pros and cons and then they make the appropriate decision for their child. Morrison said rural schools are different and not all vaccines are offered in rural schools. The ones offered depend on the clinic and the community, said Morrison. The Christ the Redeemer Catholic School district stretches from Oyen to the west side of Canmore.

The senior boys and girls basketball squads from Holy Cross Colligate hosted teams from within the Christ the Redeemer School Division for a season opening tournament from Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at the high school. Both teams are looking forward to making big leaps this season. See Page 23 for more coverage of the tournament. Doug Taylor Photo

Lions keep on giving

Don Geiger, Strathmore Lions President presented Rose Hamrlik President of the Celebration of Lights Christmas Park with a $1,000 cheque. The money was used to create a new helicopter display at the park. The Strathmore Lions have been busy donating money to different organizations in the community over the last few weeks. Bridging the gap with gift jars

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Seniors, young moms, and children could be seen mingling together at the Lord of All Lutheran Church on Dec. 3 during a morning of fun and festivities. Every second Monday the ladies from the Bridging the Gap Mentorship Program gather to do a craft, socialize and have lunch together. (There are) different craft ideas for the moms to do and then Grandma mentors who sit and hold babies while moms get to visit with each other, said Pat Cornett with the Bridging the Gap Mentorship Program. This week the numbers were the highest they have been, something that is attributed to the fact that different groups were invited to join in. Parent Link, Growing Opportunities, and Step One Health and Wellness Support Group members took part in the craft and lunch. The mentorship programs see a grandma matched up with a family. The bi-weekly meeting is set up to give the families a chance to get together and bond, while doing something fun. Thats what Bridging the Gap is about is bridging the generations, said Cornett. We wouldnt be able to do these sort of programs with Bridging the Gap if we werent encompassing the volunteer segment because it just wouldnt come together, said May Rostecki-Budzey with the Growing Families Society. The Lord of All Lutheran Church lends the space in kind which allows the program to be offered for free. During the Dec. 3 gathering each participant made Christmas gift jars. There were three cookie jar options to be picked from and everyone also made a soup jar. A gift jar is Mason jar, or another type of

Young political enthusiasts spend a week in Edmonton

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Getting youth more involved and interested in politics is a part of the goal behind the Forum for Young Albertans. The forum offers a non-partisan political learning opportunity to senior high school students. Forum participants had the chance to watch politicians debate over a number of different topics. Students then also got to job-shadow and learn what it is our politicians are doing from a first-hand perspective. From the trip I learned a great deal about the careers one can follow in politics and the jobs that come with being a civil servant, and it is a very taxing job. I would eventually love to pursue a political career but it will have to come after I am through university and have a bit of experience under my belt, said Keean Bexte, who attended. It was an experience you wouldnt be able to get anywhere else, the forum allows you to learn and be part of the politics in our province, said Rachel Rogers who also spent the week in Edmonton. The forum stood out to me because of the opportunities it presented. It allowed me to look very closely into the daily life of civil service from all aspects. The forum has very good connections to civil servants and this made it very easy to meet MLAs and party leaders, said Braden Muenchrath. The students arent just busy working the whole time; they also get a chance to meet other young Albertans who share some of their interests. The four from the StrathmoreBrooks Constituency all heard about the opportunity in different ways, but all shared a desire to learn more about what it is like to be an MLA and what exactly the political process entails.
every year Grade 12 students are picked to take part in a weeklong Forum for Young Albertans in edmonton. This year the students were in edmonton from Nov. 18 to 24. Last year my teacher thought it would be a great opportunity for me to go to The Forum for Young Albertans, I looked it up and agreed right away, it seemed like something Id be very interested in. The program was cancelled due to the election last spring and they invited me again and I couldnt pass up the opportunity, said Rogers, who plans to obtain a Political Science degree. What stands out about the forum was that unlike other political conferences, it brought together a group of politically aware youth where we could learn about the different perspectives and cultures of average Albertans. Personally I have a huge interest in politics and I believe that it is tremendously important to be informed about our systems of government and its activities, said Bexte. Muenchrath has also always had an interest in politics and he found the forum helped him learn a lot about how things work in Alberta. I plan on going to university to take either political science or sociology. I plan on a career in civil service, said Muenchrath. The trip helped flame their passion for politics and each of the students feels fortunate to have been chosen to be a part of the forum.

Cosmetology fundraiser a success

rynneLLe Wiebe Times Jr Reporter The annual cosmetology fundraiser, held by the Strathmore High School cosmetology classes on Nov. 28-29, was a huge success, raising $3,000 to adopt three families this Christmas. Student volunteers were busy from 11 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and from 3:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Thursday, offering various salon services such as haircuts and colouring, manicures, pedicures, and facials. We had I think fifteen students here each night and we were fully booked, said Cheryl Davidson, a cosmetology teacher at Strathmore High School. The girls worked really hard and they were exhausted by the end, but it was just a fun Christmas atmosphere. In addition to the support from those who enjoyed the services the class offered, many donations were given to help the students raise $3,000, doubling their goal of $1,500. The students will use this money to adopt three local families; together the students will go shopping to buy Christmas gifts to help these families in need. [We are] really grateful to the girls for all their work and to all the people that came and supported the event, said Davidson.

Eat well, especially vegetables and fruit. Get plenty of rest. Throw away used tissues right away so the viruses they contain dont infect others. If you have a young child (over one year old) who is kept awake at night with a cough, try giving a teaspoonful of honey. It often soothes the throat and can reduce the cough reflex and help the child get a good nights sleep. We all know someone who is affected by cancer. It seems it is on the rise and it is. With current shortages on fertilizer and rising costs for it, researchers look for other ways to fertilize crops. Aged manure used as fertilizer is familiar to residents around Strathmore. Another common method used in Southern Alberta is spreading bio solids from waste treatment plants on land. The monitoring shows agronomic rates give good crop response, said Gordon Dinwoodie, Land Reclamation Specialist with the Alberta Department of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development Bio solids come from sewer treatment. Solids are removed from sewage by filtration, mixed with oxygen and microorganisms that use anaerobic digestion to break down the organic solids, and neutralizes pathogens still in the wastewater. The water solution filters off and the muck that is left is the bio solid. Some of the public concerns with bio solids are bacteria and disease, pharmaceutical residue and offensive odor. Alberta Environment continues to monitor and develop regulations addressing those concerns. Regulations for heavy metals from industrial waste began in the 1980s. Whats been done over the years is source control. It really cleaned up the heavy metal issue in bio solids and I would say that the heavy metals are not that big of an issue anymore, said Dinwoodie. Since that time, Alberta Environment has developed comprehensive regulations dealing with the treatment and spreading of bio solids. Dinwoodie said the recent release of The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environ-

ment report The Guidance document for the beneficial use of municipal bio solids, municipal sludge and treated septage www.environment.alberta.ca will encourage jurisdictions to modify regulations even further. Pathogens are always a big concern. The treatment processes they go through, from all the information we have been able to see, are fairly effective at getting rid of those microorganisms, said Dinwoodie. However, some studies have shown within a mile radius of spread sites an increased occurrence of staph bacteria causing rashes, other illness and breathing problems. He said Alberta currently doesnt regulate pathogen limits but limits could be set and testing done. A lot of other jurisdictions do that and I would like to move us in that direction. The other approach is operational requirements. How the sludge is treated and time it remains in the lagoons, said Dinwoodie. There are some pharmaceuticals and personal care products that do wind up in the bio solids. When it gets land-spread, studies show the resulting concentrations are really quite low and once they get into the soil they degrade. There are a few that are fairly persistent. One is tryclosans. They come in things like anti-bacterial soaps. The question for us as regulators is what are the implications of that? A lot of research is going on and the story is not completely written on that yet. Studies show they are not taken up by plants, which is good news. Nobody has identified any problems yet, but more research needs to be done. The odor comes from the sulphur and ammonia compounds that are byproducts of microbial action at work

in the treatment process and after soil application. It is the process that also kills the pathogens. The smell can decrease by mixing in lime and applying heat in the treatment process. In the soil, quick soil tilling or use of direct injection will decrease the odor. The process is a green method of providing nutrients to the soil. The spreading is allowed on land that grows small cereal grains, oilseeds, dried legumes, and forage crops, but are not permitted under current provincial guidelines, on root, vegetable, or tobacco crops, or dairy pasturelands. Research shows it doesnt transfer to the foods we eat. Literature doesnt show any uptake, said Dinwoodie. The material is full of nutrients, in my perspective as a soil scientist it is a shame to throw those nutrients away. It is high in phosphorous. That is why we talk about the responsible use of land spreading. It needs to be managed properly and managed properly there are benefits for farmers in terms of organic matter additions and nutrients that can offset fertilizer and costs. The bio solids get contracted out to private trucking and application operators, who sign contracts with farmers to apply to their fields. Tests should be done to make sure land is not over saturated. Making sure the operators are applying the product properly is hard to police. We rely on having the rules in place on what they are supposed to do or not supposed to do. If people see them pumping stuff into a ditch or something that should be reported to us they should call the. 1-800 number (1-800 222-6514) for emergency issues or environmental concerns, said Dinwoodie.

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Lyalta resident Christine Forner has been a member of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD) since 2008 and was recently awarded a fellowship for outstanding service to the field of dissociation and the ISSTD. Forner, who holds a BA, BSW, MSW, and is a Registered Social Worker, works out of Calgary. She specializes in EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Psychotherapeutic Meditation techniques and Neurofeedback. Its really an acknowledgement from my peers that the work that I have done for the society and for the field is worthy of note, said Forner. Forner believes the work she has done for past few years for the society are what prompted her colleagues to see her presented with the award. She teaches a Dissociation 101 introductory class for the annual conference. On top of being on the conference committee, a board member and treasurer, Forner is also the ISSTD Chair of the Student and Emerging Professional Committee. Its an aging society and when I started being involved, about four years ago I started going to the meetings and the business meetings, I really saw that there was not a lot of younger people and they werent really doing much to reach out to a younger population. So I kept bugging them and I started the Student and Emerging Professional Committee, said Forner. She began reaching out to people, both locally and globally, to help them recognize the society is there for them, the support and training are there and the education and contacts are there too. She was asked to be on the board a year later and treasurer a year after

that. The committee that she created is threefold. It is a place for emerging professionals to meet to really begin to take on leadership or governing roles within the society. It is also a place where they try to help expand awareness of the issues of trauma and dissociation as well as expand training opportunities. There are also connections made with senior members who can, in a sense, mentor, or at least answer a few questions from the professionals emerging into the field. Forner said the world of dissociation is a very specialized area of mental health that isnt well known; there are a lot of myths, lack of understanding and misinformation about what it is. When traumatized or in a high stress situation people often go into flight, fight or freeze mode. When people move into freeze the front brain, the logical, reasoning one goes offline and they move into survival tactics. Freeze happens more with kids, because they often cant flee or fight, and if there is not a compassionate object ive observer who can help bring them to a safe place, then the dissociation can stay and the ability to be mindful and objective hasnt happened. Mindfulness is really important in the healing process, that ability to be objective to your own experiences or somebody elses experiences is really important. Dissociation and mindfulness are rival brain activities and dissociation always wins because its a lower survival, stronger brain activity. My research and the work that I do is really examining this issue of mindfulness and dissociation and how to help people who dissociate become mindful, said Forner. Letters to the editor

Setting the facts straight!

To the Editor Although there continue to be baseless conspiracy theories being alleged, it is the towns position that transparency and openness be pursued at every opportunity, and as such we are responding to comments and allegations which have appeared in local letters to the editor. 1) Question and concern on decision making process of Administration and Council Municipal Operations are highly legislated; we are bound by a number of Regulations, Statutes and Acts. For example, the decision making process between Council and Administration is legislated under the Municipal Government Act, Section 201, which is the section legislating Municipal Organization and Administration. Clause 201 (1) Councils Principle Role in Municipal Administration provides that a municipality is governed through its Council and specifically sets out the responsibilities of the municipal Council itself. The Council is responsible for the following: 1) the development and evaluation of policies and programs of the municipality; 2) ensuring that the powers, duties and functions of the municipality are properly carried out; 3) carrying out the powers and duties of the municipality that are provided for specifically in the MGA and any other enactment (MGA s.201). Sections 207, 208, 209, and 210 of the MGA describe the roles and responsibilities of the CAO and designated officers of the municipality. Strathmore Mayor and Council and administration follow the procedures legislated under the MGA for all decisions requiring the approval of Council. It is the role of Council to set policy and make decisions on policy, and the role of Administration to implement the policies. Council rely on Administration to research and provide recommendations to Council, which in turn allows Council to make informed decisions on municipal matters. This information is available for anyone to read on the Queens Printer Website. 2) Loss of Control over the Recycle Yard and 5 acres of industrial property? Through the contract, the Contractor will be required to continue to provide the current level of service at a minimum. The Contractor will be responsible for the Operation of the Recycling service and will report to the Town regarding the service. The five acres will be transferred to the Contractor as payment for the service in the first five years of the contract. 3) How much revenue is being generated by materials collected vs cost for operating? In 2011, the Recycling operations operated at a loss of approximately $157,209. In 2010, the loss was approximately $199,210. There is no net revenue, but a net loss. The important consideration with respect to recycling is that it takes waste out of the landfill and saves the landfill cost for disposal of these materials if they are not recycled. 4) Recycled materials are at high demand and revenue collected should put this facility at a surplus of funds? The demand and price for recyclables is highly variable, which often ends up in stockpiles of unwanted materials, and low profit margins. Since the Town began the recycle facility, we have yet to see a profit, based on revenue vs expense, factoring in the recycle facility only. 5) Town of Chestermere receives a large portion of the compost collected; are they paying for it and are the citizens of Strathmore paying for the trucking? Compost material is currently being taken to a local tree nursery. The Town contacted numerous local nurseries, composters and other businesses to investigate businesses that might be interested in accepting the compost. All but one business wanted to either be paid to accept the material, or didnt want the material. 6) Was the value of the property calculated into the amounts the Town will be saving over the next 10 years? Yes. 7) In calculating the high value of the five acres plus the value of the materials collected, the citizens of Strathmore are taking a huge loss? Not accurate as outlined above, there is limited value to the materials collected, and the Operations costs exceed the value of the land over the 5 year initial period of the contract. The terms of the contract over the next five years of the contract reduce the Towns costs further. 8) Is this a veil for the Town becoming a city? The contract for the recycle facility has no bearing at all on the requirements or criteria to become a city, so the simple answer is no. 9) Does this mean that the citizens of Strathmore will be paying another fee for mandatory recycling pickup? There has been no discussion on mandatory recycling. 10) Will the two curbside recycling companies be squeezed out by charging them a fee to deposit at the recycle facility? Charging a recycle company to drop off recyclables would not be a wise business decision on the part of the recycle facility operator, as the items deposited at the facility would have a value and would form part of their revenue. Most recyclers collect as much of a material as possible, because better prices are paid for larger amounts. The contract indicates that the local businesses will continue to be permitted to deposit recyclables at the Recycle Yard at no cost. 11) Will there be a fee for take it or leave it? That would be entirely the choice of the facility owner/operator with the approval of the Towns CAO or designate. In the future, if anyone has concerns over Town operations, please contact the Town office for the facts prior to publishing incorrect information, as false information only hurts the citizens of our Town. For clarification on the facts, please contact the Town office at (403) 934-3133. Mayor, Council & Administration Strathmore

Changing downtown for the better

To the Editor I recently visited Canmore for a Christmas party and must say I enjoyed the natural and built surroundings of the town. Canmore has the good fortune of a spectacular natural setting; however, I also had to admire the work the community has done to achieve a beautiful built environment. In other words, leadership in the community took the time and effort to determine what the Town of Canmore could and will look like. There are very tight controls on what builders, developers and businesses can build and how they blend into the desired aesthetics of the town. Thank you Councillor Bob Sobol and Councillor Rocky Blokland for moving our town forward in a progressive and positive way through planning what our community will look like in the long run. I cannot imagine thinking that individual entrepreneurs will take the time out of their busy and demanding schedules to coordinate and implement a long range improvement plan for downtown. I come from a rural community in Saskatchewan where two shopping centres were built which nearly resulted in the demise of the downtown core. Through the hard work and effort of the City of Swift Current leaders, a downtown revitalization plan was put into place (part of which included planting trees and flowers, creating gathering spots for residents with benches and flowers as well as standards for new buildings. Some parking spots were lost in the improvements, but in the long run, the downtown core has been revitalized and local businesses have seen the positive impact). The world, our community, and our local population is changing and will continue to change and I hope we never fall prey to the notion that something that has been tried over the years didnt work, so lets never try again. In the mid 1980s multiple social networking sites were attempted. Can you imagine if Facebook concluded, social networking has been tried before and met with limited success, so lets not try and do it again .... I have lived in Strathmore for over 20 years and love my community and the residents that call Strathmore home. I appreciate the work that Communities in Bloom and the town have done over the last number of years (development of walking paths, planned green spaces, increasing the amount of plant material throughout the community) but I think long range planning is the mandate of the elected body and if done in collaboration with the business and residents, it will achieve an amazing end result! Thank you Councillors Blokland and Sobel for demonstrating sound leadership and moving this issue forward. If we dont create an attractive community and areas where people want to spend time and money to shop, we may have more land available for residential development where businesses once operated. Tis the Season

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Christmas time can be a strange time for some of us. I mean, I want to be in a Christmas Spirit, but sometimes I dont know what that is. Is it putting up displays, villages, lights or is there something else? I feel like Charlie Brown when he asks about the true meaning of Christmas what exactly IS it? I know that to me, its not putting up outdoor lights anymore. For years, like many of you, I have been putting up outdoor lights. Ive been up on miserably cold days, as well as those days of Chinooks. Either way, Ive come to see it as an unnecessary chore. Youre up on the roof, or an extension ladder, often in awkward and dangerous positions. Our house is a two-story one, so I REFUSE to do the top peaks. My daughter keeps hounding me, saying it would be more Christmassy (if thats even a word) if I could put lights at the very top of our roof! I asked her if it would be just as Christmassy if she found dad crumpled up at the bottom of an extension ladder! The other ironic thing about putting up Christmas lights, is that no matter what, some Un-Christmas words slip out. Either Ive scared myself, lights have flickered off, or a whole string has fallen. This usually results in curse words that really have no business being used in the season! I mean, the Baby Jesus has nothing to do with these coloured lights why bring him into it? Anyway, Ive discovered other husbands who also hate putting up lights, so I dont feel so much like a Grinch now! Christmas concerts are usually a big part of the season, especially if you have Elementary aged kids. These extravaganzas take a great deal of time and effort, for the teacher-coordinator and other staff. While the concert parts are being regularly rehearsed, classroom teachers are helping make things, organizing students, and guarding students so that they dont start going crazy! The teacher directors have to keep the cast of thousands under control, help them learn their parts, and then hope for the best on Performance Night. Performance Night for parents is also huge, as you have to arrive the night before, and camp out, so that you can get a good seat! Its like trying to get seats for an Eagles concert, or Sir Paul McCartney! Anyway, to those teachers and assistants who put on these productions great work, it IS appreciated! When I was in an Elementary concert, and we were onstage in our crepe paper vests ready to belt out our song and dance for the standing room only crowd, something unfortunate happened. One of my pals, Frank (fake name) turned a sickly shade of white. No, not white more like transparent! Then light flecks of green replaced that, and he began to wobble. When youre in Grade 4 and your pal is wobbling on stage, what do you do? Do you break ranks and try to catch him, risking the wrath of the teacher? I think not, and sadly, I let my pal fall! Its not easy to faint, fall, and vomit at the same time, but Frank did! It was going to be hard to dance with our partners near THAT hazard! We were commanded to drag him off stage, because we all know the show must go on! I think he did come to, but it was after our big scene. His one big shot at fame came the wrong way! Christmas dinners and parties can be a lot of fun, too. At a recent Christmas Dinner, a friend told me about a time when he was hypnotized. He was made to dance ballet, among other things, and described it as knowing what youre doing, but feeling like it was the best thing to do at that time. This was years ago, and the hypnotist left him with a last message: that whenever he hears Cotton Eye Joe, hell have no choice but to tap his foot! Now, I like to experiment, so I found the song on my phone, held it to his ear, and watched yup, the foot was tapping. This was not enough proof, so later I casually requested the song from the DJ. THIS time, he couldnt be prepared. Sure enough, I looked down, and that old foot was a tappin to beat the band! The next day I sent him the video on Facebook, with the caption: just checking! I dont know if Ill ever hear that song without wondering if his foot still taps. Luckily for him, the song isnt a really common one! Can you imagine if the song was Happy Birthday hed probably have to get a cast on that foot! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. If you would like to get in touch with Pat, you can send him an e-mail at Pat.fule@shaw.ca)

Standard Mo Bros raise funds for Movembers Prostate Cancer awareness

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor

Manny Everett Photos

Things started to look a lot fuzzier and hairier in every community across the nation as men grew their moustaches to raise funds for the awareness of Prostate Cancer. During the month of November each year, the movement called Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of mens faces, in Canada and around the world. With attempts at growing moustaches, these men raise vital funds and awareness for mens health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. Nov. 1, men and boys file their registration at Movember. com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas. Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsor-

ship for their Mo-growing efforts. Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of mens health. At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valour by throwing their own Movember party and shaving off the fruits of their labours. At Standard School a team of six students along with supervising teacher Mr. Mark McKeen grew (some more successfully than others) moustaches. For one young man, Morgan Miller and his mom took things one step further in their fundraising. Sue Miller and Morgan (from Rosebud) made chocolate mustache lollipops to sell during the lunch hour at the school at $1.50 per moustache. Made in milk chocolate, white chocolate and chocolate/peppermint, the group raised just over $158 from fellow students and staff at the school on top of their funds raised in sponsorship for the event.

Enrollment at Trinity is going up

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) has undergone some changes this year, some of which have been credited for helping the school see 30 per cent growth. Bevan Daverne, Superintendent of Schools for Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) believes consultations with parents, gathering feedback and then implementing some of the ideas is what has helped the school grow. Overall the feedback were getting from people is they feel really good about the direction of that school, they feel good about the staff, they feel good about the leadership, they can attend now, said Daverne. We have local church support for the Christian portion of education for the kids and I think people are feeling pretty good that as an environment for their children and about the quality of education that theyre getting there too. To me theres three clear reasons. One is Golden Hills is now providing free transportation in town to Trinity which wasnt the case in the past. Weve dropped our alternative program fees from $500 per student to $250 per student and thats with Golden Hills support as well, said Principal Wayne Funk. The third thing is that weve got a spiritual partnership with a local church which we didnt have in the past. I think thats a reason for growth as well. The Alliance Church is now a partner with the school and Funk said the school appreciated the partnership with the Lutheran Church in the past. Thanks to the increased number of students, the school is now able to split up some of the classes a bit. There is now a Pre-Kindergarten program, a stand-alone Kindergarten class, a stand-alone Grade 1 class and a Grade 2/3 split. The Grade 4,5,6 students are in one class and the 7,8,9 also share a class. If the school gets to 125 to 130 students, they will be able to break down the classes more and get closer to all stand-alone classes. One hundred twenty-five gets us to a nice spot, I would love to see us get to 250 and have the government have to say well obviously they need a new school for that facility, thats our long term goal, said Funk. This is the fifth year the school has been in operation. The first year there were 56 students. As of the end of November there were 100 students registered.

Rosebud Folk Club brings Prairie Roots Revue to Rosebud

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Prairie Roots Revue will perform at Rosebuds Thorny Rose Cafe Dec. 10. The Revue is a collective of five folk musicians, brought together by Zachary Lucky of Saskatoon. Twenty-three-year-old Lucky has been writing and performing solo folk music for five years, and last year, he began talking to other prairie songwriters about touring as a group. One by one, Carly Maicher, Kacy and Clayton, and Ryan Boldt (front man and songwriter for Juno-nominated Deep Dark Woods), joined him. They became Prairie Roots Revue, now doing its second tour. This summer, Prairie Roots Revue was performing in Lethbridge, Lucky said, where Alysa van Haastart was touring with the play She Has a Name. Van Haastart, also the organizer of Rosebud Folk Club, loved their sound calling it generous, full of story and empathy, and harmonious and invited them to perform in Rosebud. Ive always had it in the back of my mind to play a show at Rosebud, but it never quite came about, Lucky said. I just love the chance to bring my songs to a new town, and to share those songs with people who may not have heard them, especially with the Roots Revue. These are all really great performers. Lucky said his own song writing is influenced by real song writers, people who are focused on songs and melodies and what theyre saying. He believes listeners like how honest his music is. The songs I write, theyre not elaborate .... people find comfort in that simplicity .... when you get a song
PLEASE ADOPT FROM A RESCUE, all of our cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped & health checked before being adopted into their new forever homes!!

in its simplest form, theres something in that song for everybody. And he loves performing with the other singer/songwriters in Prairie Roots Revue. From flying solo to doing that was really enjoyable, he said about their first tour. Sometimes when youre performing, youre really trying and youre having to try. When we were on stage for that (first) tour, we were just having a hoot every night. He felt like it took very little effort as they just did what came naturally. This is Prairie Roots Revues first time to experience Rosebud, and Van Haastart said the village offers an audience like none other .... really attentive and supportive. Lucky said the members of Prairie Roots Revue are excited about the chance to bring their songs to this new community. Theyre not performing Christmas music, but Lucky said he hopes theyll capture the collective spirit of the season and that people will leave feeling good about being part of such a unique experience. Lucky and Van Haastart encourage us to check out the musicians websites for a preview of their music, then come out to Rosebud on Dec. 10 and enjoy the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $10 at the door, cash only, at Rosebuds Thorny Rose Cafe. Nicholas
Shy, Male, Grey Tabby
Nicholas is a gentle big soul who was found in November, 2010, with several other cats as kittens. He is a beautiful big fellow with a soft heart for other cats. After coming to live with his foster family, he helped rear up the babies with gentle care. He has a soft, deep purr that attracts the other cats in his family and can most often be found in a kitty pile on the bed in a sunbeam. Although he loves to be petted and scratched by his foster family, he is still very cautious around people. He loves Temptations and can be quite brave at coming to get a treat! If he found a family who would be gentle and patient with him, he would do very well. He would also do well with other cats or to be adopted with one of the cats in his family.

The production of Toad of Toad Hall in Rosebud is already a smashing success. The performance can be found on stage until Dec. 22.

Irresistible Toad of Toad Hall comes to Rosebuds Studio Stage

Laureen F. Guenther Time Contributor Rosebuds Studio Stage offers a guaranteed way to laugh away the stress of the upcoming holidays. On Thursdays to Saturdays, from now til Christmas, Rosebud School of the Arts second-year students present Toad of Toad Hall, based on A. A. Milnes adaptation of Kenneth Grahames classic Wind in the Willows. Rebecca Wolgemuth, a Rosebud graduate, wrote the script and Jeany Van Meltebeke directed the students in bringing it to a very entertaining life. The play opens with a car crash. Lovable-but-arrogant Toad (Brynn Linsey) has just smashed his seventh motor car... or is it his eighth? Toads loyal friends -- Rat (Naomi Esau), Badger (Sarah Spicer) and Mole (Alyssa Glen) are determined to cure Toad of his dangerous addiction to vehicles. Weasel ( Jenny Daigle) and Ferret (Erin Dunphy) are equally determined to benefit from Toads troubles. Brynn Linsey uses her wonderfully expressive face to depict Toads emotions self-pity to deviousness to sorrow to glee with hilarious results. She almost makes us feel sorry for self-destructive Toad. She certainly makes us laugh at him at every moment. All of the actors, between playing their main roles, take on other characters -- train engineer, puppeteer, washerwoman, jailers daughter, policeman, judge. Theyre working hard, but its obvious theyre also having a lot of fun, making the play even more fun for us to watch. But audience members arent just watching. We cheer and hiss (when prompted), blow a train whistle and hide a fugitive. And we look around in surprise when the characters tunnel right under our seats. In this show, the audience is a character of its own, said Naomi Esau, playing Rat. We have to feed off the audience and work with whatever the audience gives us. Jeany Van Meltebeke, director and Rosebud instructor, said its simply stunning to watch students find their voice .... when you see them obeying an impulse, you know its intrinsic to them. It can be quite vulnerable, but also affirming .... this frees them up to obey their instincts even more. They know they have permission to feel foolish. Thats what we welcome. This interactive production is a delightful place to introduce your children to live theatre, but it is no less fun for adults. Come to think of it, this is a good time to take in two family-friendly plays at once. Rosebuds brand-new Christmas play, May and Joe, showing on the Opera House stage, is another fun way to escape pre-holiday stress and plant the seasons joy in our hearts. Toad of Toad Hall runs at 4:30 p.m., Thursday to Saturday til Dec. 22. Call 1-800-267-7553 for tickets. See www. rosebudtheatre.com for more about May and Joe.

Anyone can fall - prevent it from happening to you

Liza SunLey Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research What do the Queen Mother, Nancy Reagan, Ed McMahon, Pope Benedict XVI and Fidel Castro have in common? They are all seniors who have suffered the serious consequences of a preventable fall. Sadly, thousands of seniors fall every year in Alberta, often with devastating results. One in three persons over 65 will fall at least once a year. Forty per cent of nursing home admissions are the result of falls. Anyone can fall, of course, but as you get older your chances of falling and getting hurt increase. While falling may not seem serious, falls can disable, cause physical and mental distress, and seriously diminish the quality of life, especially for seniors. The good news is falls are preventable. The Alberta Centre for Injury Control & Research has partnered with a variety of organizations to develop an annual month-long information campaign called Finding Balance focused on reducing the number of falls among seniors in Alberta. Our recommendations are based on research and have been found to be highly effective, says Dr. Don Voaklander, director of the Alberta Centre for Injury Control & Research. Some people think falls are just part of aging, but there are things we can do to reduce our risk. One of the best ways to prevent falls is to stay active. Physical activity improves your balance, helps you move easily and increases your energy. Do at least 30 minutes of activity every day. This can even be broken into 10 minutes of activity three times each day. Consider activities like tai chi, stair climbing, bowling walking or yoga. There are other activities you can do at home to build strength and improve your balance, says Iain Muir, director of professional practice with Physiotherapy Alberta. He recommends incorporating balance exercises into your daily activities. When you are drying the dishes, stand on one leg and then the other. Challenge yourself to hold your balance longer each time. You can also do a sit-to-stand exercise by standing up from a seated position and then sitting back down. Do this as many times as you can once a day and youll feel your legs get stronger. For more information about falls prevention, contact the Alberta Centre for Injury Control & Research by calling 780492-6019, e-mailing acicr@ualberta.ca or visiting www.findingbalancealberta.ca.

Prairie Waters kindergarten students meet police horses

The morning and afternoon kindergarten classes at Prairie Waters elementary School received a visit by some very special guests on Nov. 26. Calgary City Police Sergeant Brent Jacklin identified a special student in one of the kindergarten classes and in conjunction with the Chestermere RCmP, arranged for a visit by Constable Scott Campbell and Constable Garth Blias, of the Calgary Police Service mounted Unit. Constable Campbell and Constable Blias rode their horses into the school parking lot for the students to meet them. With each class, Sergeant Jacklin, with the assistance of Constable Hilary Jennings (also with the Calgary Police Service), spoke to the kindergarten classes about safety and the different roles of the police. The importance of letting the students know the police are safe persons they can turn to if they are lost or need help was reinforced. Once outside Constable Alix Blakie (Chestermere RCmP) and Constable Jennings helped the young students safely meet the two police horses. The students were also shown police vehicles and given a special badge and a coloring book. This event was a nice way for the students to meet different police officers and a great way for little persons to get close to some really big horses. it was also another seamless interaction by the Chestermere RCmP with their Calgary Police Service partners. The continued community support from the staff of the Prairie Waters elementary School is always very much appreciated and certainly recognized during this visit.

Patronal Feast Day celebrated at St. Andrews in Gleichen

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor St. Andrews Day is the feast day of Saint Andrew. It is celebrated on the 30th of November. St. Andrews Anglican Church in Gleichen celebrated their day in style and took advantage of their recently installed Bishop of the Calgary Diocese the Rt. Revd Greg Kerr-Wilsons visit by having a double baptism on Sunday. It was standing room only in the little Anglican Church in Gleichen as Denise and Doug Brown with their daughter Olivia, and Kyle and Katie Crump with their son Hunter, celebrated their childrens baptism along with numerous family and friends in attendance. Without a full-time Priest to service them the members of the congregation have relied on supply minister Father Bob Greene (from Calgary) and Rev. Brad Everett (from Nazareth Lutheran Church in Standard) to do regular services and preside over the sacrament of Holy Communion. Bishop Kerr-Wilson made the effort to come and personally meet with the little congregation and preside over the service on Sunday. He had previously served as Bishop in the Diocese of QuAppelle in Saskatchewan before being elected at the Diocese of Calgary in September of this year. He was accompanied to the event in Gleichen by his wife Vickie and two daughters (their son attends UofA in Edmonton). After the morning service all were invited to the new Church Hall for a celebratory annual spaghetti lunch in honor of the Feast of St. Andrew. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, and St. Andrews Day is Scotlands official national day. In 2006, the Scottish Parliament designated St Andrews Day as an official bank holiday. It is also a national holiday in Romania. Upcoming events for St. Andrews include a Carol and scripture reading service on Dec. 23 at 10 a.m. and their Christmas Eve service on Dec. 24 at 2 p.m.

Staying safe this holiday season

Strathmore RCMP Detachment This December holiday season, the Strathmore RCMP will step up efforts to combat impaired driving throughout the Strathmore Detachment area. The RCMP is committed to improving public safety on all Alberta Highways. When motorists follow safe driving practices, they reduce the risk of death and injury to themselves and others. Reducing the number of impaired driving incidents is one of the RCMPs top traffic priorities. Families, friends, and communities are all devastated when the actions of an impaired driver take one of their own. Impaired driving is a crime and will be treated as such. Driving while impaired by alcohol and refusing to comply with a demand to provide breath samples are criminal offences. It is important for drivers to remember that you do not have to be legally drunk to be charged with impaired driving. Further, it is a criminal offence to be in the care or control of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drug. Impaired driving imposes enormous costs on our society. Families, the health care costs, the legal system, insurance rates and the general public are all negatively impacted and all pay the price for impaired driving. Drivers who drink and drive may kill themselves, their friends or entire families resulting in very serious legal, financial, social and other consequences. Even worse, drivers who drink and drive may be involved in a crash that harms someone they love. Reducing impaired driving on Albertas highways will save lives, prevent injuries and lower insurance costs. There are too many irresponsible drivers who think that they can drink alcohol and still drive safely, said Cst. Wyman of the Strathmore RCMP detachment. From 2005 to 2009, on average each year over 115 people were killed and over 1,800 people were injured in collisions involving at least one driver who had consumed alcohol prior to the crash. NatioNal impaired driviNg StatiSticS Impaired driving is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Alcohol is involved in nearly 40 per cent of all motor vehicle collisions in Canada. One in every 33 drivers on Canadian roads at night are impaired. Young drivers under the age of 19 are 251 times more likely to be involved in a fatal collision with a blood alcohol concentration in excess of 150 milligrams percent. According to Transport Canada, drivers with a high blood alcohol concentration over 170 milligrams percent represent 64 per cent of night time fatal crashes. People with a blood alcohol reading in excess of 170 milligrams percent are 461 times more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle collision. alberta impaired driviNg StatiSticS On average for the past five years, approximately 8,100 people were convicted for impaired driving related offences in Alberta. On average over the past five years, approximately 8,600 - 24 hours driving disqualifications were issued each year under the provisions of the Alberta Traffic Safety Act. Statistics show that males between 18 and 24 years of age are the most likely to have been drinking before a crash. On average in Alberta, one in five drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking prior to the collision. What can Albertans do to combat Impaired Driving ? Make the right choice for everyone dont drive if you have been drinking or using drugs Plan ahead for safe transportation there are alternatives to impaired driving If you encounter a suspected impaired driver, record the licence plate number and dial 911 anywhere in the province.

it was cold, there was a nasty wind and the moon was hidden behind the clouds but that didnt stop a group of hearty community members from participating in the moonlight Walk of Hope on November 28. An annual event organized by the Strathmore Crisis Society, the walk began at the north end of Kinsmen Park and wrapped up at the Lutheran Church on Lakeside Boulevard. Among those who braved the cold to complete the walk was an RCmP Constable from the Strathmore Detachment, members of the Wheatland Kings hockey team and Crisis Society board members and volunteers. At the church, participants were provided with warm drinks and a few words from the RCmP, the Town and event organizers.

The Clock Struck Twelve

HannaH Many Guns Time Jr Reporter It was a busy four nights for the senior drama students of Strathmore High school as they performed the satiric murder mystery The Clock Struck Twelve, by James Reach, from Nov. 24-27. Its a really funny play, and I [along with my peers], had tons of fun to performing it, states Jenna Gigantelli, a Grade 12 student who performed in the production. The two hour farce murder-mystery revolves around a struggling team of singers that find refuge from a storm in a mansion. However, the audience soon finds out that the mansion is not just a mansion, but a haunted mansion with its own mystery. It is through comedic actions, wit, and the fast pace that makes this play thrilling to watch, and has you laughing out loud. Bronte Eden, Cody Neal, Brandon Skinner, Mack Beech, Madison Gillies, Jenna Gigantelli, Marc Kuntz, Katherine Hatton, Caitlin Tourout, Abby Kauenhoffen, and plenty more dedicated drama students partook in this production, making it a great success for the drama department and proved as a stepping stone for aspiring actors within the drama program. I think we have improved immensely throughout the course of the semester, and it really showed during our performances, says Gigantelli. It is hoped that the same, if not better, success comes with future Strathmore High School drama productions.

The Wheatland Kings ended a two-game losing streak by pounding Coaldale 5-1 on Dec. 1 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Kings bounce back

Mario Prusina Times Editor

Doug Taylor Photo

After a pair of disappointing losses to teams below them in the standings, the Wheatland Kings responded with one of their best games of the season. The injury-depleted junior-b team snapped a two-game slide by hammering the Coaldale Copperheads 5-1 on Dec. 1 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The guys came out and worked hard, beamed head coach Doug Murphy. It was probably one of the better efforts weve had all season everybody worked hard, we kept our discipline, our scoring was going and (goaltender) Richie Hubbell played great again. Our defence has been a little beleaguered, but theyre turning it around (and they) played really, really well. Coaldale likes to get you going there are a few teams that like to drag you down and do stupid stuff, but we stayed out of it and made them play hockey. After Coaldale took numerous penalties, the Kings made them pay with three power play goals, including two consecutive in the second period. The Kings top line of Andrew Bergmann, Ross Fox and Sam Lonnberg combined for eight points in the win, which helped Bergmann maintain his position as the highest point-producer in the league with 60 points in just 19 games. Hes happy and hes enjoying playing, said Murphy of his star forward. We got him part way through the season last year and I think in his second game, he broke his jaw. It took a while

to find the right guys for him to play with and in the playoffs, we hooked him up with Fox and theyre like a school of fish out there. They know exactly where each other is going, and Lonny is right there with them. Its really an incredible combination. However, the weekend didnt start out well for the Kings. After suffering an embarrassing loss to Banff the week before, the team fell 6-4 to the upstart Cochrane Generals on Nov. 30. Despite seven points from their top line, the Kings allowed 50 shots on goal in the loss en route to the loss. We got beat to the puck a lot, assessed Murphy. We didnt come up with as strong of a game as we should have. We didnt put the puck away when we had the opportunities. (Having said that), thats not the same Cochrane team we beat 5-1. Theyve strengthened themselves, they picked up a new goaltender it makes a huge difference. Theyre getting back into their routine theyll go on a run here and theyll be right back into playoff contention fairly quickly. The Kings will now prepare to have their hands full this coming weekend, when they hit the road for a pair of games. Wheatland will travel to Okotoks to face the top team in the league on Dec. 7, before heading north to face the upper-echelon Red Deer Vipers the following day. The Kings next home contest is Dec. 15 (8 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre, when they host the High River Flyers in their Teddy Bear Toss game. When the Kings score their first goal of the game, fans are encouraged to toss their new stuffed animal on the ice. All stuffed toys will then be do-

nated to the crisis shelter. The team will also be accepting donations for the Strathmore Christmas Hamper Society for the game versus High River. Fans can bring a non-perishable food item, a new unwrapped toy or a gift certificate under $25 and gain free admission to the game. Busy Christmas season The Wheatland Kings will remain busy with a pair of exhibition games this holiday season. The team will host the Czech National Team in an exhibition game on Dec. 26 (8 p.m.) and the German National Team the following day (8 p.m.). Hockey Canada is hosting a World Hockey School tournament, and as part of it, theyve got a bunch of U17 teams coming over from the different countries, said Murphy. They wanted to get some games for them that are going to challenge them. Were close to Calgary, we skate well and we dont goon it up, (so Hockey Canada) contacted us. According to Murphy, it will be a treat for the Kings to host they exhibition games. The guys are really pumped about it, he said. Any time you have an opportunity to play another country its great. Were in Strathmore, but well be representing Canada. Some of our guys have played teams from other countries before, but I dont think any of them have played a National Team before. Of the guys who played in last years tournament, there were four players drafted to the NHL last spring. So it will be some very, very good hockey.

Bisons all tied up

Mario Prusina Times Editor After a tough loss to the top team in the league to end the month of November, the UFA Bisons started December with a pair of ties versus upper-echelon teams in the North Division. The local triple-A midget team hit the road and earned a 1-1 draw versus the Leduc Oil Kings on Dec. 1, before taking a 2-2 tie with the top team in the North, the St. Albert Raiders the following day. I thought it was really good, said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen on the weekend. If you take out our first period on Saturday in Leduc, we kind of took control of the game and probably didnt get rewarded on some of our scoring chances we had. Their goalie played really well, but having said that, our goaltender was fantastic as well. After Leduc took a second period lead, the Bisons tied the game midway through the third period, when MacKenzie Bauer converted a feed from Matt Forchuk and Ryan Zeniuk. Goaltender Richard Palmer made 41 saves, including 17 in the second period. The following day in St. Albert, the Bisons put forth a solid effort, playing very close to a complete game. We played pretty close to 60 minutes, it was just one of those games where we didnt capitalize on our opportunities, said Friesen. It was a tight checking game with lots of body contact and good speed. At the end of the day, our power play went 0 for nine on the weekend, so if we could have popped one or two goals in each game, then its entirely different and we have a chance to blow it open. One concern that Friesen had was the team giving up the opening goal late in the second period in both games. However, as he noted, the team won both third periods in the two games. After giving up the first goal late in the second period versus the Raiders, Markson Bechtold scored 54 second into the third period to tie the game, when he converted a feed from Tristan Thompson and Connor McCallum. St. Albert restored the lead shortly after, before Matt Forchuk took a pass from Bauer later in the third to earn the draw. The Bisons, who moved into fifth place in the South Division, are now just four points back of the second seed. They are now preparing for the busiest stretch of the regular season, when they play seven games between Dec. 8-22. Six of those games will be at the Strathmore Family Centre, including a pair this coming weekend when they host the CAC Gregg Distributors (Dec. 8, 5:30 p.m.) and the SSAC Athletics (Dec. 9, 2 p.m.). We have a busy month before the Macs Tournament. We have some nagging injuries and the flu took its toll on the entire dressing room, so were just hoping we can stay healthy and turn the page here, said Friesen. If we can get on a run here at home and take care of what we need to do over the next six to seven games, I think that well be in a pretty good spot heading into the Christmas break.

Gold medal winners

Kris Hinz Strathmore U14 Ice Vortex Strathmore U14 Ice Vortex ringette team brought home the GOLD in the Lacombe tourney November 30th - December 2nd. Ten was the lucky number this weekend as the team scored 10 goals in each of their 5 games. Day 1 they tied Airdrie 10 - 10, and defeated Saskatoon 10 - 6. Day 2 brought down the home team with a hit of 10 - 3, with a whopping 66 shots on net, to their 11. Bang up job girls! The final day, a second Saskatoon team fell victim to our posse - Strathmore 10 - Saskatoon 2, and the Gold medal match gave the Strathmore team a chance to replay the Airdrie team they had tied on Day 1. The teams looked evenly matched once again with a score of 3 - 3 at half time, but the next 20 mins. brought 6 more goals from each team - leaving the teams tied once again!! This led to a sudden death overtime where every member stood strong and Martina was able to bury the final goal in the top right corner- winning the Gold medal match 10-9! Way to play as a team, hang in there and commit to your lucky #10.

Body checking, the great debate

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Allowing body checking at the peewee level has been the source of some debate for awhile now. Currently body checking is not introduced until a player reaches the peewee age group, 11 and 12 years old. Some groups want to see body checking banned altogether for all minor hockey players. Earlier this year Hockey Alberta offered a survey to people to find out how they feel about the topic. Out of 142 people, 85 per cent believe implementing changes should be done at a provincial level. Out of the same 142 people 81 per cent do not think body checking should be removed from all levels. For somebody like myself thats old school, I think that they went the wrong way when they took checking out of the game until peewee. I understand why they did it. They want to de-

velop skills but now weve taught kids through half pint, novice and atom that its okay to skate with your head down, said Wayne Hansen, Strathmore Minor Hockey (SMH) president. Hansen said when the players move into peewee for their first year they may be playing with some secondyear kids who are bigger, stronger and faster. The first-year kids havent yet been broken of the skating-with-yourhead-down practice or they havent been taught properly and thats how they get hurt. Hansen feels the governing body, which in Strathmores case is Hockey Alberta, needs to do a better job of teaching body checking. On the other end of it, I can see their concern butconcussions, everybody is all worried about concussions and I understand why theyre worried about them but there are not necessarily a lot of concussion from the actual body contact itself. Some of it is from improperly fitted equipment, said

Hansen. We all know that kids dont wear their mouth guards properly. Theres some responsibility on their part. People buy equipment because it seems appropriate but they dont have it fitted properly, to me thats a big concern. Hansen said players and parents should go to a reputable sports store, or go on the Hockey Alberta website which talks about how to find and buy a properly fitted helmet. Helmets now also have concussion straps, and since switching to them a few years ago Hansen said there has only been one reported case of an SMH player with a concussion. Its an issue that is so divided down the middle with people who just believe one way or the other. One they dont think that we need more legislation involved and others who fall on the other side who figure somebody should legislate for everything, said

Hansen. Strathmore Minor Hockeys position on this would be until Hockey Alberta or Hockey Canada legislates it, it wont be coming to Strathmore. Its not something we feel as a board is in our jurisdiction to be doing. We follow Hockey Alberta, Hockey Canada rules. On the Hockey Alberta website they state that they follow the national standard outlined in rule 6.2 in Hockey Canadas playing rules which indicates body checking is permitted at the peewee level. In June voters opposed a motion put forward by Hockey Calgary to remove body checking in all levels of peewee. In Quebec body checking is not allowed in all levels of peewee hockey. In Ontario the Ontario Hockey Federation does not allow it in the house league levels. The full results of the Hockey Alberta survey can be found at www.hockeyalberta.ca.

VANNEBO, Kathleen Gertrude

Kay was born on June 20, 1918 in Lewes, England and passed away on December 1, 2012 in Strathmore, Alberta. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Palmer Martin Vannebo (Pee Wee), in 2006. Kay, a British Land Army Girl, and Pee Wee, the Canadian soldier, met and married in England during the war. She joined him in Calgary in 1948, celebrating 61 years of a loving partnership prior to his passing. Strathmore had been home to the Vannebos and their Springer and Brittany spaniel dogs, all named Butchy, for over six decades. Kay worked in the old drugstore on Main Street, had a restaurant on the highway and then together Kay and Pee Wee enjoyed years in their Main Street hardware business. Their large garden, the cottage at Chestermere Lake and active participation in local Legion activities provided endless enjoyment. This quiet, lovely, proper British lady and very proud Canadian, was always ready to lend a helping hand. She was a wonderful Aunt and cared for numerous nieces and nephews during summer vacations at the farm Northeast of Strathmore in the early years and later at Chestermere Lake. Somehow she survived with good humour their endless adventures and misadventures. Years later, Kay had a feast prepared whenever they visited, predominately featuring the fish and game that Pee Wee, the fisherman/hunter, taught Kay how to cook. Kay spent the last seven years at the Wheatland Lodge where she enjoyed the company of several longtime Strathmore friends also residing there. Kay is survived by her brother Fred (Maura) Parsons, and their family in England. Canadian relatives include her loving and caring niece Pat Reynolds and husband Bob, of Calgary; nephew Norman (Verna) Vannebo, of Lethbridge; niece Peggy Howard, of Victoria, BC; along with numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and brother-in-law Paul Huot, of Edmonton and his family. Her special, enduring friendships with Wanda, Irene and Yvonne brightened her days. In respect of Kays explicit request, no service will be held; her ashes will rest with her beloved Pee Wee at the Strathmore Cemetery in the Field of Honour. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Dr. John W. Fanning for decades of care and attention. She was one of his first Strathmore patients! Kay was also most appreciative of the many kindnesses shown by the Wheatland Lodge staff. To send condolences, please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Wheatland County Food Bank (Box 2331, Strathmore AB T1P 1K1).
