EDU 5170 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY I Lesson Plan Integrating Technology & Pedagogy Directions and Outline Name ______________Deborah

Katz______________________ Date _____12/6/2012______ Standards: ISTE NETS Standards 3.d research and information fluency: process data and report results 6.b technology operations and concepts: select and use applications effectively and productively Content Standard (Common Core Curriculum) 3.1zz Titration is a laboratory process in which a volume of solution of known concentration is used to determine the concentration of another solution. (performance standard) 4.3.1xxxv calculate the concentration or volume of a solution, using titration data Lesson Objective(s): 1. The student will be able to collect and interpret the data from a simulation of a strong acid strong base titration. 2. The student will be able to use the information obtained from the simulation to write a formal lab report, including a titration graph from excel. 3. The students will be able to calculate the concentration or the volume needed to titrate a strong acid or strong base when given the other variables. Introduce the Learning Activity: I will communicate a summarized lesson objective to them verbally. The summarized version of the three objectives will be communicated in a sentence similar to the one following. The overall purpose of this lesson is for each student to use the simulation to perform a strong acid strong base titration and to create a formal lab write up. I will also provide a motivator for student leaning in three ways. I will relate this concept to the students daily lives by mentioning the variety of applications neutralization has in life. This includes the treatment of waste and the production of various forms of technology such as ipods. I will make sure to express my own enthusiasm in order to convey the importance and excitement of this topic. Finally, I will grade the end product. I will introduce the days lesson by reminding the students of previous content including the definition of a titration, an acid and a base. A brief review of stoichiometry will also be given. I will move onto the basic mechanics of a neutralization reaction and titration. I will end the introduction by directing the students to go to the edmodo homepage (I will direct the EdTech I students to my website and from there, the edmodo page).

Provide Information: The procedure for this lab period will be given to the students verbally and will also be included in a word document on edmodo.com. Definitions of some of the content vocabulary words will be briefly gone over during the introduction of the lesson. Other words, particularly the names of the different pieces of equipment will not be given (students will have been taught and assessed on all definitions prior to lessons. Science vocabulary is important and students will be expected to know and be able to use these words without prompts.) No samples will be needed for this lesson (Samples will be provided during the lesson on edmodo for this demo class, due to the potential lack of chemistry knowledge). A simulator (from http://chemcollective.org/activities/vlab?file=assignments/Default.xml&lang=) will be shown on the projector and a brief demonstration will be given, going through the different parts of the simulator. Provide Practice: The students will practice objective 1 during the lab period as running the titration simulation and collecting the data will be the bulk of the lesson. This simulation will also be used in following experiments which will include weak acid- strong bases titrations and strong acidweak base titrations. Objective 2 will be practiced near the end of the period when students being to write up their results and practice will continue at home as they finish these reports. This objective will also be used and practice during other lessons which include experiments. The 3rd objective will be practiced during the beginning of class (via direct instruction), in the post lab questions, during the short quiz on edmodo and during later titrations. All the practice will be done individually. Practice will begin when the students logo onto edmodo and click on the link, bringing them to the simulator. The students will follow as I give a brief demonstration using the projector. The students will then open the word document containing the procedure and an excel document for their data and will begin to run the simulator and collect the data. The students will be placing the data into excel page and when finished, will open a new word document to begin their lab write up. The students will then choose to either work on their lab report or begin to take the quiz on edmodo. Provide Knowledge of Results: I will provide verbal feedback during the students practice by rotating through the room as they run the simulation, encouraging and correcting the students as needed. I will also provide written feedback by grading their formal lab report and writing out comments for any points lost or for any work that exceeds expectations. Review the Activity: The students will summarize the main points of this lesson in the conclusion and post lab questions of their formal lab report. The review of this activity will not be restricted to this one method, but this is the only clear cut evidence collection of review. The themes and information

taught during this lesson will be used in following lessons. Objective 1 will be reviewed because following lessons will include using the simulator for other titrations (e.g. strong acid- weak base). Likewise objective 2 will be reviewed with each subsequent lab. Objective 3 will be reviewed in the quiz on edmodo, the post lab and the on the upcoming unit test. Method of Assessment: I will assess the students in the following ways. Objective 1will be assessed primarily through the data table that will be created as part of the formal lab report. Each student will have a different data table. As titration curves are well understood, I will be able to assess the data for proper usage of the simulation as well as to check that the student used a strong acid and a strong base. Objective 2 will be assessed through the overall lab report. The formal lab report will be graded with the lab report rubric. The titration curve will be assessed both as part of the lab (for a summative grade) on separate basis (as part of a formative assessment that has no affect on the students overall average.) Objective 3 will be assessed in two ways. The students will need to demonstrate this skill when answering the post lab questions and when answering a short quiz found on EdModo. This skill will also be demonstrated later, as part of the unit test.

There is a materials section. The materials section includes all materials used in experiment. There is a procedure section. Correct grammar and spelling is used. The procedure is in paragraph form. The procedure includes all steps in the report. All steps are in chronological order. The procedure is written before the experiment period. The student was actively engaged in the lab procedure and discussion. All charts/tables are included in the final lab report. All charts/ tables are filled. The data is correct. Any work needed is shown All charts/ tables have titles. Graphs are included in the final lab report. Graphs are based on your data points. Graphs are drawn on graph paper. All graphs have a title. All graphs have a labeled x axis and y axis. The students conclusion answers the question posed by the hypothesis using the data obtained in the lab or indicates knowledge learned. Every correct answer is worth 5 points. 3 pt for the correct answer 2 pt for work shown/ justification
