Exploring Interactions Cycle 2: Iterate

Noortje Habets 4011430 Gert Pasman & Natalia Romero Herrera

Design and research goal

The design goal for this project is the following: I want starters to feel guilty when not separating their organic waste and to feel good when they do. In the previous cycle I did a research on finding out why starters did not separate their organic waste. It turned out that the place to deposit the waste is too far away from their home, it takes too much effort in their busy lives to go there. Besides putting a bag with organic waste in the underground depot results in not knowing where it will go to and what will happen with it. Giving a positive effect on separating and bringing organic waste would encourage starters to actually do so. Also, when separating at home, their smaller houses/apartments will have too much organic waste to do something with. But in the bigger cities, like The Hague, there are not enough possibilities to put your organic waste close to your home. Gathering it togheter with your neighbourhood would be a solution, since everyone can use the amount they need. This is the reason why I picked a social service or product to go on with in cycle two, in which the neighbourhood participates and encourages each other by sharing experiences. This would also bring up the guilt feeling when not participating in something that everyone around you does.

Interaction vision
In cycle two a new interaction vision has been created to include the social aspect of the product idea and to emphasize the guilt part of it. Using the product feels like donating some coins to a person who is collecting for charity. The qualities that come with this interaction vision are: Conscious: the fact that you know about the charity and know that you donated money makes you feel conscious of what you are doing and what for. Which is also the social aspect: you are helping others by donating a small amount of money. Effortless: it only costs little effort to put this few coins into the collecting box Rewarding: it gives a satisfied feeling when you give money to charity: you feel a better person. On the other hand; not participating in using the product feels like not giving any money to someone who is collecting for charity while knowing you have some coins in your pocket. You know that it takes little effort to do so, but you do not because you do not feel like it. After closing the door you will feel guilty, knowing that you did not put this little effort in donating for charity.

Design and research activities

The people that participated in my research in the first cycle, all live in the city centre of The Hague. When looking at their surroundings, both of the apartments had a small, but empty, square really close to their home. This space could be a nice opportunity to put a device to gather organic waste from people that live in that neighbourhood and turn it into compost. The device would give the possibility to bring your organic waste to and get compost out of, as well as undertake some social activity with your neighbours. The thought behind is that you actually see and learn what happens with your own organic waste and you can use it for your own purpose again. After doing research on the different ways to make compost and what to do with it, I selected the elements I wanted to include in the design.

This turned out to be too much for just one design. In the Interactive Prototyping workshop a set of cards was made which all had to do with the elements names above. I asked four participants to select on out of 2 cards every time, imagining that they were a starter with a busy life. The cards had to do with social activities, sharing experiences, what elements of making and using compost was found most interesting and in what way they would like to learn about these aspects.

Cards used for Interactive Prototyping workshop

Different aspects that could be used in the design

Based on the outcome of the Interactive Prototyping workshop I decided to focus on: The social aspect o bringing people together o sharing experiences and compost Compost & compost tea (all were curious about compost tea) Learn how, in a visual way Interacting in feeling: o taking compost out o feel warmth The social aspect will cause that people share their experiences with this device and by this encourage people who do not participate yet, to get curious and get motivated to participate as well. Besides a one or two household without a garden will not be able to keep all their organic waste for compost at home.

Concept: Sharecycle
Together with the fact that sometimes there will be more people at the same time using the device, I decided to use multiple bins to put the organic waste in. Hereby when in use, the warmth of the compost, which will be about 50 degrees, will be used to warm a bench which is placed on the other side of the bins. This way people can interact with the device, they can feel and understand the way it works. The bench also encourages do undertake social activities: have a quick talk about your experience with this product. The bins will have an upper and lower lid. In the upper one you can throw your organic waste, out of the lower one your can get the compost. From scratch, this process takes about 3 months, but later on it will be an on going cycle with multiple bins in different stadia. Besides normal compost bins there will be compost bins combined with the possibility to make compost tea. To make compost tea, one has to put water in the bin and take it out from the lower part of the bin: the water will absorb nutrients and run to the bottom of the bin, where you can tap the nutritious water out of the bin an bring it home to fertilize your plants. Shape To design the right shape for the device I made up a few criteria: The design has to represent an on going/ cycle process The device has to be two sided: to dispose the compost and to sit down and feel the warmth I did a form study to decide what the shape of the device would be. I started with organic shapes, in which I tried to create multiple usable sides of the product. A single bench seemed to be too little, which is why I decided to focus on a shape that would have space for a bench multiple compost bins on each side.

From the organic and circular shapes I noticed that some forms would turn out inconvenient when producing the bins and also to place the bench in an open way. After the organic shapes I started with more angular shapes, but still placing them in a way it would suggest a cycle or on going shape.

The shape on thehe bottom left came out best since it really represents a cycle or on going line, but still is made out of angular shapes. This shape has been further developed in SolidWorks.
