Alongside this poetry of ethnic-consciousness and postcolonial attitude, there runs the other stream that bypasses all this, concentrates solely on the defamiliarization of language through a fusion of seriousness and levity, neologism and archaism, trenchant irony and subtle innuendo, suave gentility and downright effrontery. Poetic language savours of the muck of the street, of the social outcast and mentally deranged, of bullies and buffoons. The poets often create an idiom that is impenetrable to everybody except probably to the initiate.
