ATTITUDE

l Attitude is everything. It’s the way you

respond to life each day-all day.
l It’s the way you define and interpret
your experiences.
l It’s the sum total of your beliefs,
assumptions,expectations and values.
l Attitude is the way we look at the world
through our expectations and beliefs.
Attitudes In Action

l Early in life, we imitate the attitudes of

our parents,teachers,friends and
leaders.
l Entering adolescence, we latch onto the
attitudes of those we admire, respect or
fear.
l In later life either we continue the
adolescent process; or adopt the
behaviour and attitude of popular sports
figures, entertainers, or cult heroes.
Parents must be
positive models for
their kids. However
sometimes parents
slip into negative
modes. When they
do, their kids are the
first to remind them.
Attitude affects
productivity
On an average, we process 50,000 thoughts during the day.
-Our thoughts affects each of our personality.
-Affects our attitude and productivity.
When expectations are positive - we are generous &
helpful towards others.
Exercise better judgement in problem solving, decision making
and creative skills.
When our expectations are negative,
- We have less ability to solve problems
- We feel insecure and emotionally fragile.
When Attitude Are At
Odds With Behaviour

Sometimes attitudes and behaviour are

not in harmony as they are supposed to
be.
we must find a way to realign either the
attitude or behaviour and relieve the
discomfort of what psychologist call
cognitive dissonance.
We all need to perform an attitude check :
•To take off our attitude shields
•Evaluate the attitudes developed
•Clean off some old attitudes and replace
them with new ones.
Nothing happens until you
mix attitude and action.

If Mother Teresa had stayed in

her convent, the Missionaries of
Charity would not have
established 517 centres in 120
Countries.
The Psychology Of Attitudes

• Knowledge of Attitudes contributes to understanding

people’s reaction.
• Disagreements occur as attitudes influence the way
facts are experienced.
• The meanings and importance of things are
determined by attitudes.
• Prejudice is an unfavourable attitude
• Interpretations of facts tend to support existing
attitude.
• Attitudes have an emotional content, thus emotion is
likely to influence certain attitudes
ATTITUDE STRUCTURE

• Attitudes develop in the process of need satisfaction.

• Individual develops favourable attitudes towards object and

belief that satisfy his wants.

• Many attitudes held by people lack validity, simply because they

are not sufficiently well informed.

• The individual has to necessarily depend upon the

opinion of experts. For a child, experts are his parents;
for a student, the teachers; for the writers, the books;
for the religious persons, the pundit or priests; for scientists,
the findings of the other scientist of the field, etc.
