O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

The Editor
Coming to the end of this month of November, when we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, we place in your hands this issue of Nuntia. May MARY, the believing woman, faithful to God, continue inspiring us in our Christian commitment to strive every day to be good news for the poor.

The Superior General

His November activities began with a trip to Cuba
The annual meeting of AMMs International Council was held in Cuba. Its members met in the Provincial House of the Daughters of Charity on the 3rd and 4th. Present were: Sister Carolina Flores from Mexico, Executive Secretary of AMM International; Mrs. Olimpia Ruano from Portugal, AMM Councillor; and Julio Adolfo Castellanos from Guatemala, AMM Councillor. Also present was Sister Iliana Suarez, General Councillor of the Daughters of Charity. At this meeting the journey of the Association was evaluated; reports on the countries and regions were given; and the tasks proposed for each year, as well as the new ones, were reviewed. An interesting detail is the growth that the Association is experiencing in the world. A clear example of this is Slovakia, which has scarcely begun and already has more than a hundred constituted groups. Another important aspect is that they have started organizing the first General Assembly, which is scheduled for 2014, from 17-24 November in Rome. The principal aim will be to promote the participation and communion of every member of the Association. The Council meeting ended on the 4th with the Eucharist in the Parish of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, accompanied by various groups of the Association. The next Council meeting will be in one year in Panama City. AMMs website offers a variety of formation materials that can be very useful for that purpose. Among these are some catechetical presentations for the Year of Faith developed by Juan Bautista Iborra, Subdirector General of AMM International. We invite you to visit it: http://www.amminter.org.

The principal objective of the visit to Cuba was to meet with the confreres serving in Cuba, while celebrating 150 years of the CMs presence in this Caribbean country. In this respect the Superior General was able to meet with all the confreres, except two who work in the Parish of San Francisco and who were unable to travel to Havana, because that area was very affected by Hurricane Sandy. There was also a meeting with confreres from different provinces, who had come for the celebration. The dialog was on Reconfiguration. Present at this meeting were: Orlando Escobar, Visitor of Colombia; Noel Mojica, a Colombian missionary and former Visitor of Cuba; Faustino Burgos, Visitor of Puerto Rico; Evaristo Oliveras, Provincial Treasurer of Puerto Rico; and Francisco Sols, Visitor of Venezuela. The exchange among the confreres of the other provinces and those of the Province of Cuba was very fruitful. Father Gregory met with those in formation, both the CM and the DC. Four young men of the CM are studying philosophy in the Major Seminary of Havana and there are five Seminary Sisters and Postulants of the DC. The Formators of the Sisters, as well as other Daughters of Charity, also participated. The principal topics were on Fathers reflections concerning the Synod of Bishops on New Evangelization and the Year of Faith; the Vincentian Family and reconfiguration. He also had a meeting with the Vincentian Family in the Parish of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, where different members took part. It is necessary to highlight too the participation of two groups of young women of the parish: one called Prophets and the other called Disciples. They are young people who want to live out the Vincentian charism in a more local way, within the limits of their parish, as part of its pastoral work with youth. The meeting concluded with the Eucharist. The Superior General met also with the Daughters of Charity, who were finishing a retreat facilitated by Santiago Azcrate from the Province of Saragossa. In another moment he met with the majority of the Daughters of Charity when, among other things, the topics of the Synod of Bishops, the Year of Faith, but especially reconfiguration, were addressed. The latter is well on its way in order to make a single province from Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti.

News Bulletin from the General Curia of the Congregation of the Mission

Saturday, 10 November, was the great celebration marking 150 years of the presence of the Congregation of the Mission in Cuba. Father Gregory presided the Eucharist, concelebrated by the confreres, and with the participation of different branches of the Vincentian Family. The homily was on the call that the Vincentian Family has to be Good News for the poor, as the CM has done these past 150 years in Cuba. Congratulations to the province on this anniversary and for its desire to continue being good news for the poor. After his visit to Cuba, the Superior General returned to Rome, where he had different office activities, including meeting with the General Council. Then he travelled to Paris on 14 November for a meeting with Daughters of Charity from some of the English-speaking countries. From there he went to Ireland where he celebrated, together with the confreres, the beginning of a new Vincentian mission, which hopes to form leaders on the topics of justice and service, especially to the poor. On the 18th, he returned to Rome. During that week he had different meetings: with the Council, with MISEVI International, and, on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, he took part in the Meeting of Superiors General, at which the topic was the Synod of Bishops. The participants shared their reflections and the election of the new animation team of the Superiors General was held. On the 22nd, he travelled to Naples to take part in the meeting of JMV Europe.

Toward the beatification of a group of Martyrs of the Vincentian Family in Spain

The Vincentian Family is filled with joy because, during this Year of Faith, the Beatification of our sisters and brothers, martyrs of the Faith, will be celebrated. In the process, the causes of 103 members of the Vincentian Family of Spain, who were tortured at the time of the religious persecution between 1931 and 1939, were presented. Of these postulations, the following have been concluded and these persons will be beatified on 27 October 2013:

Sister Josefa Martnez Prez and 12 companions (including a laywoman from the Association of the Daughters of Mary of the Miraculous Medal), Sister Melchora Adoracin Corts Bueno and 14 companions, Father Fortunato Velasco Tobar and 14 companions.

For the following, the study of the Process of the Causes in Rome continues; it is not known when they can be beatified: Father Vicente Queralt Lloret and 20 companions among whom are two Daughters of Charity, Sister Toribia Marticorena Sola and Sister Dorinda Sotelo Rodrguez, and seven lay Vincentians, six from the Association of Children of Mary of the Miraculous Medal of Cartagena and one from Valencia. Jos Mara Fernndez Snchez and 38 companions, among whom are six laymen, fathers of families, belonging to the Association of the Knights of the Miraculous Medal from the Basilica Parish of Madrid. The declaration of martyrdom of these Witnesses of the Faith is proposed as an example for our way of Faith and an invitation to take them as intercessors. May they inspire us to be faithful on our journey giving reason and hope to what we believe.

Some excerpts from the interventions of the confreres at the Synod

Monsignor Markos Ghebremedhin, C.M. The Church needs to reaffirm the irreplaceable role of catechists in the Church, equipping them with resources in order that they be effective ministers of the New Evangelization. It must offer them the resources necessary so that they can support their families and, also, understand their role within the Church as a vocation. In this great moment of renewal in the proclamation and transmission of the faith, a decision of this type would be of great support and help in the new evangelization to which the Church is calling us. Monsignor Cristoforo Palmieri, C.M. The harvest is not small and some of it is already ready, but to harvest it, we lack diligent and educated workers, capable of sacrifice, very close to the people, and only through love and with love, be they local or a gift from other sister churches.

Monsignor Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, C.M. The lay ministers, therefore, must not be conceived as an accessory or as some optional activities to lighten the work of the priest in the Small Christian Communities. They are an integral part of their life and growth, and when the ministers diminish, the whole life of the community diminishes. Experience has shown us sufficiently that religious associations centered only on prayer and devotion can turn into a type of exclusive spiritual club for holy members more faithful to the meticulous details prescribed in the script written by its founder than to the demands of Jesus in the Gospel.

Emmanuel Typamm, C.M. Consecrated persons in Africa and Madagascar are made aware and want to bring awareness to other apostolic agents (laymen, priests, bishops) that reconciliation, justice, and peace, or, in other words, the justice and peace that lead to reconciliation require dying, losing ones life, for the truth of the Gospel.

G. Gregory Gay, Superior General of the C.M. We evangelize by entering into the world of the poor, and by growing in the virtues of humility, simplicity, charity, and justice. This is at the heart of our Vincentian heritage. The preferential option for the poor is fundamental for new evangelization. In the experience of community, we make visible and credible the person of Jesus, promoting a civilization of love. In living out these virtues, we draw nearer to God, each other, and the poor, our lords and masters.
