Drawing from a Live Model

Dont Talk to the Model While Drawing
This includes talking with other students or moving to another seat, activities which should be limited to breaks. Not only are such distractions rude, they cut into the valuable time with the model (which students are paying for).

Requests for Poses

ask during breaks, not when the model is already in a pose

Three Ovals - Head, Ribcage, Pelvis

The influence of the two separate ovals is very important! With lateral bending in the spine, the angle of the ribcage can be dramatically different from the angle of the pelvis, causing compression on one side, and stretching on the other side when bending and twisting.

Showing projection
o Circle the pivot points on the projecting body parts at the proper angle. *** Tilted joints should turn into ellipses! o Connect the two circles with straight lines. The stick is now the center line, defining the shortest distance between pivot-points in the joints. o Suppress the hidden side of the far end circle to indicate that the full circle is the projecting end. If an attaching body part sits in front of the projecting side of the cylinder, then you need to lose the full circle, like you see at the elbows.

Cross Contour Lines

Cross-contour lines describe an object's horizontal or crosscontours rather than its vertical edge (side to side rather than up and down). They emphasize an object's volume.

Proportions used in figure drawing

o An average person is generally 7-and-a-half heads tall (including the head). o An ideal figure, used when aiming for an impression of nobility or grace, is drawn at 8 heads tall. o An heroic figure, used in the heroic for the depiction of gods and superheroes, is eight-anda-half heads tall. Most of the additional length comes from a bigger chest and longer legs.

How you choose to continue is up to you obviously the most helpful tool in refining the figure is direct observation of the model. **Remember the differences b/w male and female bodies men are more squared-off and generally have broader shoulders.

Pivot Points

The bones articulate with each other within joint capsules. There are imaginary centers of movement inside the joints called pivot points. It is much easier to think about pivot points than trying to decipher and draw the external view around the joints. This can provide enormous assistance when you want to organize a confusing gesture pose.

o The skeleton is the foundation of human form and movement. o Rather than just draw what you see outside, its helpful to remember whats inside, and draw a stick-like skeleton.

Revisiting Bomeislers five skill sets for observational drawing

o the perception of edges using line or contour drawing, o the perception of spaces within a drawing through the use of negative space o the perception of the relationship of angles and proportions also known as sighting, o the perception of lights and shadows using light logic, o and the perception of the whole, or gestalt, which incorporates the previous four perceptual skills.

***you should be observing what it is youre drawing at least 75% of the time.

The most important thing to consider whenever you are drawing clothing or any type of fabric is the direction the fabric is going to be pulled. Folds are caused wherever the fabric is being draped or stretched. Generally, you shade away from the fold lines or in the valleys - any places that a shadow would be cast; and the highlight appears where light bounces off the hills made by the raised folds.
