What's the difference between a long scale bass and a short scale bass?
Short scale basses are generally defined as having scale lengths between 30" and 32". Long scale basses conventionally have a 34" string length. The first and most obvious reason to use a short scale bass is physical size. With their shorter necks, less distance between frets and more compact general dimensions, short scale basses are a good choice for young players and anyone challenged by the extra reach a long scale instrument requires. Quick Tips: For Tremolos - Next time you change strings lube the bridges knife edge where it makes contact with the posts. Apply Vaseline liberally! It makes a difference!!!... Fine tune your intonation using upper harmonics at the 19th fret Only adjust your truss rod with no string ten sion or serious damage could result When tuning; Always tune up to pitch not down to pitch. Or you will be out of tune soon as you bend a string Scratchy sounding pots; Remove pickguard and Use Deoxit to spray into the terminal slot and roll the shaft from full on to off many times to clean up any debris in the pots wiper Most Strat single coil and single coil size hu mbuck er p ickups require 250K pots; 500K pots can be too bright What is String-Length Com pensa tion? The closer the strings action the less compensation you need. Example when the string is pressed this causes your note to go sharp. The fix: Lower your action and adjust each strings saddle will compensate for this... When fine tuning intona tion: If a string sounds sharp when fretted at the 12th fret, when com pared to the harmonic note (12 fret). Move the strings saddle away from nut (lon ger st ring length). Use the opposite for flat (move closer to nut) resulting in shorter string length
Seymour Duncan Exclu sive. When Yngwie Malmsteen turned to Seymour Duncan to improve and refine his pickups the YJM Fury Signature Model for Stratit made sense to refine another important part of his playing volume potentiometer. With his highly refined technique and exact ing attention to sound, Yngwie employs the volume pot to take complete control of his phrasing dynamics. He uses his pinkie finger to flip the volume on and off for dramatic, lightning-fast starts and stops. That's why Yngwie's YJM High Speed Vol ume Potentiometer contains a minimalviscosity lubricant f or fas t -action potentiometer turns. Chose the YJM HighSpeed Volume Pot in either a 250K Audio Pot or 500K Audio Pot. The split-shaft design of the post can accommodate a variety of knobs.

How CTS No-Load tone pots work. Settings 1-9 work like a standard tone then kicks out of the circuit at 10 (full clock wise/ bright setting) removing both the pot and capacitor from the circuit. This gives a noticeable increase in brightness and output in the full treble setting. The no load pot can be used in place of any standard tone control on any guitar. Wired like a standard tone control. CTS No-Load tone pots come either 250K or 500K.

Continued from page 1... However, many studio pros have long known a secret about the sound of short scale basses. The shorter strings demand lower string tension to be properly tuned. This gives the strings a kind of soft and floppy feeling but it also creates fatter, "blooming" low notes and what musicians perceive as sweet upper notes. In the 1960s, short scale basses were more popular, but many were generally cheap student models with narrow string spacing and poor tone. As a result, many bassists got a bad impression of them. Although many bassists find the closer spacing of the frets more comfortable to play, for various reasons (sound not the least of them), long scale basses have remained more popular since the introduction of the first Fender Precision Bass in 1951. With the exceptions of the Ampeg/Dan Armstrong "See-Thru" basses and a few special order Alembics, there aren't many professional-quality short scale basses on the market today. Continued from page 3Heres an email from The Custom Bass 6 customer. Hi NW Custom Guitars! First, this thing is amazingly playable. You did an outstanding job getting this thing set up right. The action feels right on. The upper fret access and playability feels right. For comparison, my 2 regular guitars are a Peavey Generation (tele-type) and an Agile 7 String Texan (Telecaster type again) both of which have stainless frets and where set up by Mike Lull's shop in Bellevue. I love the way those 2 guitars play - but for reasons I can't quite put my finger on yet - I think your set up on the Bass6 may even surpass those guitars. It just feels so easy to play. I can't wait to try finger picking on the Bass 6. I just picked up the Bass6 and played - and didn't have to think about it for a second. Having really never played much Bass and never having held a Bass6 type instrument - I expected some learning. Other than the longer scale length - it just feels natural and spot on. Excellent! Second, the final appearance is stunning and perfect - without a single scratch. From this, I can tell you took incredible care when assembling the guitar to protect the body, neck and hardware finishes. I can't find a single flaw on the body, the neck or any of the hardware. I can't even find a scuff on the screw heads! The care you took to keep all the parts pristine while assembling this guitar comes through. Very nice craftsmanship. Anyway - just wanted to give you my first impressions after the first couple days of playing it and my thanks for undertaking a somewhat off the wall build. I am very glad you took on the job and even more pleased with the results, and covering not only the end result but the positive build process as well. Thanks again for building this incredible guitar. L. R.
