Keypad/Display Module
This manual describes the installation, care and use of the xPDISPLAY Module. The Continuum xPDISPLAY Module provides a convenient, programmable interface to your Continuum facility automation system. Authorized operators or tenants in your facility can easily arm or disarm a security zone, quickly view HVAC or security information and/or adjust personal comfort levels with little or no training. The xPDISPLAY Module includes a four-line, 16-character backlit LCD display and a 21button ergonomically-designed keypad. The keys can be custom programmed using Andovers powerful programming language, Plain English, to perform a wide variety of functions, including switching a specific zone to occupied mode, signaling an alarm condition, adjusting the amount of override time, and arming or disarming intruder alarm points, utilizing password security. Cost-effective and compact, the xPDISPLAY may be mounted directly on dry wall, or any suitable electrical outlet box, and is intended for indoor use only.

Mechanical Installation (Remote Version)


The module may be mounted directly on dry wall, or on any suitable electrical outlet box. This module is for indoor use only and is not suitable for use where condensation may occur. 1. Locate an appropriate area for the module. 2. Place the base plate on the surface of the wall area or electrical box where the module is to be mounted and mark the location of the four mounting holes. 3. Drill the marked holes and insert wall anchors into the surface.
Note: Never drill directly into the mounting plate. Metal debris may enter and damage the xPDISPLAY electronics.

4. If you are mounting the module to an electrical box: Mount the base plate to the electrical box. Temporarily hook the module to the base plate as shown.

Expansion Cable

5. Guide the expansion cable from the controller through the opening in the back of the module. Use the internal strain relief of the electrical box or the Heyco strain relief supplied with the unit. 6. Expansion cable connection details can be found elsewhere in this manual.

7. Mount the display to the base plate using the three supplied nuts as shown below.

8. Place the plastic cover over the module. The cover is fastened by inserting a #6 Allen tool (Schneider Electric part # 30-3001-350) into the Allen fastener found at the bottom of the case as shown. Turn the screw counter-clockwise, backing it out until it is flush with the case.

The xPDISPLAY module is designed to be mounted flush with a wall. The overall dimensions of the module are as shown:

Expansion Bus Connection


Connection to the expansion bus of the controller is via the supplied cable. This cable includes connectors at both ends. These connectors are keyed to prevent incorrect orientation. Plug one end of the cable into the controller expansion port found on the bottom of the unit. Plug the other end into the display unit as shown below:

A 3-foot (914mm) cable is supplied with the xP-Display product. A 10-foot (3M) cable is supplied with the xP-Display-10 product.

Warning: Make sure that power is not applied to the controller while you are connecting the module as the unit is not designed to be hot-swapped.

Pre-Operation
The xPDISPLAY module requires connection to an external controller for its power and display data.

Warning: Never connect the display while power is applied to the controller.

After connection, apply power. If the display has never been configured before, it should display the following :

Setup Mode
The xPDISPLAY module includes a twenty-one-button keypad that allows you to interact with your system. The condition of each key can be interrogated via Plain English commands. However, there are some local functions that can be performed on the xPDISPLAY without the use of programming. To access the built-in operations, the module must be in the Setup mode. To enter Setup mode, press the center function key just below the word SETUP on the display. When in setup, use the arrow navigation keys to scroll through the options described in the table below.

Display Configuration
The xPDISPLAY module is a programmable piece of equipment that requires some setup before it can be used. The following page contains a chart indicating the setup of each of the xPDISPLAY channels. It would be best to configure your system to accommodate the xPDISPLAY according to this table before attempting to use any of its functions individually.

Display Organization Throughout the following pages, references will be made to the operation of the LCD display. Through programming, you have the ability to position characters in specific locations on the display. The following diagram illustrates the organization of the LCD in relation to line numbers and character positions.

Plain English Display Manipulation


Through Plain English programs, programmers have the ability to present a custom user interface to the user by reading data from the keypad and writing data to the display. The Plain English interaction with the front panel is accomplished using a set of System Variables described in the table below.

Display Mode This Numeric point sets the display mode of the module. The table below explains the available modes. More detailed descriptions follow the table.
Value 0 Mode Menu Description This mode is for displaying static messages such as system status or for presenting menu-type selections for a user. No editing via the keypad is supported, however, any key presses detected are returned to the controller via the ACCLCDKeyStroke system variable.

Numeric Data

This mode is designed to display prompt information on the first two lines and numeric data that may be edited on the third. The data may be edited using the numeric keys. The cursor will automatically advance after entering each digit. The first number of the third line is sent to the Controller in the ACCLCDAnswerStr system variable after pressing the ENTER button.

String Data

This mode is designed to display prompt information on the first two lines and string data that may be edited on the third. All 16 characters of the string may be edited using the keypad. The cursor will automatically advance after entering each character. The edited string is sent to the Controller in the ACCLCDAnswerStr variable after pressing the ENTER button.

DateTime Data

This mode is designed to display prompt information on the first two lines and date/time data that may be edited on the third. Only numbers and the am/pm indicator may be changed: all delimiters (: or / or .) are skipped. The cursor will automatically advance after entering each digit. The edited string is sent to the Controller in the ACCLCDAnswerStr system variable after pressing the ENTER button. The numbers can only be changed to valid values (1 to 12 for month, etc.) The valid selections wrap from highest valid value to lowest valid value and vice versa.

Password

This mode allows for a user to enter a password. Only numeric entries are allowed. The password entered is returned in the ACCLCDAnswerStr.

This mode displays the initial power-on screen.

Detailed Mode Descriptions Menu mode This mode allows you to display your information on all four lines of text without restriction. There is no automatic editing capability built-into this mode. The text displayed on lines 1 4 of the LCD display is determined by the strings ACCLCDDispLine 1 ACCLCDDispLine 4, respectively. All key entries on the keypad will be sent to the Controller in the ACCLCDKeyStroke numeric.

Numeric Data mode This mode is designed to display two lines of prompt information and a third line containing a numerical value that can be edited right from the keypad. This numeric data might be a set point, point value or other data. Editing functions such as automatic cursor positioning and key acceptance is performed locally by the xPDISPLAY. In this mode, the text on lines 1, 2 and 4 of the LCD display is determined by the strings ACCLCDDispLine1, ACCLCDDispLine2 and ACCLCDDispLine4. Line 3 of the display contains the string containing any combination of letters and numbers set by ACCLCDDispLine3. The entire line is editable and can contain numeric values, a decimal point, and plus or minus sign. The cursor automatically advances after entering each digit. The time delay between pressing the key associated with the number and the cursor advance is determined by the setting called Auto Accept found on the Setup menu page. The default time delay is 0.8 seconds. Only the numbers contained on line 3 are sent to the controller when Enter is pressed. Example: If line 3 contains TEMP= 73 F, only the 73 is returned. Invalid entries would contain no numbers or numbers greater than nine digits in length. Only the up arrow key, down arrow key and three soft keys are sent to the Controller in the ACCLCDKeyStroke numeric. All other keys are used locally by the display unit for data entry and editing. The left and right arrows can be used to position the cursor. The * key can be pressed for a space character. The # key will delete with contraction.

String Data mode This mode is designed to display two lines of prompt information and a third line containing a string that can be edited right from the keypad. Editing functions such as automatic cursor positioning and key acceptance is performed locally by the xPDISPLAY. In this mode, the text on lines 1, 2 and 4 of the LCD display is determined by the strings ACCLCDDispLine1, ACCLCDDispLine2, and ACCLCDDispLine4. Line 3 of the display contains the string set by ACCLCDDispLine 3. All 16 characters of line 3 are editable and can contain any of the xPDISPLAY alpha-numeric key entries. If no activity is detected for a brief interval, the xPDISPLAY will Auto-Accept the key entry and automatically advance the cursor. The default time for Auto-Accept is 0.8 seconds, however, this time can be adjusted from 0.8 seconds to 5.0 seconds by setting the Auto Accept value through the SETUP mode. If a different key is pressed prior to the AutoAccept time expiration, the xPDISPLAY automatically shifts the cursor to the next position. Line 4 can be used to define the soft key functions. Entering Text Successive presses on the alpha-numeric keys cycle between the numeric value, the upper-case alpha and the lower case alpha values. For example: To enter the letter: A w Press this button (number of times) 2 (one time) 9 (five times) ABCabc2 WXYZwxyz9

The 1 + - key toggles among 1, +, - and all punctuation marks shown in the table on page 17 that are not letters or digits. The * key is used to enter a space character. The left and right arrow keys move the cursor accordingly. Only the UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW and three soft key entries are sent to the Controller in the ACCLCDKeyStroke numeric. All other keys are used locally by the xPDISPLAY for data entry and editing. DateTime Data mode This mode is designed to display two lines of prompt information and a third line containing date/time information that can be edited right from the keypad. Editing functions such as automatic cursor positioning and key acceptance is performed locally by the xPDISPLAY.

In this mode, the text on lines 1, 2 and 4 of the LCD display is determined by the strings ACCLCDDispLine1, ACCLCDDispLine2, and ACCLCDDispLine4. Line 3 of the display contains the string set by ACCLCDDispLine 3. This string is expected to be filled by a DateTime as follows: Standard: European: mm/dd/yy hh:mmxm dd/mm/yy hh:mm x = a or p

If the string sent in ACCLCDDispLine 3 is not in the above format, the xPDISPLAY will format the string accordingly. It expects 5 numeric fields, from left to right, separated by a delimiter. If there are less than 5 numeric fields, the remaining fields default to 0. In the case of Standard time, it scans for the first occurrence of a pm or PM. If it finds either, it sets the pm, otherwise the default is am. This re-formatting of the Display Line 3 string occurs to facilitate editing and checking the datetime. The xPDISPLAY always reformats the ACCLCDDispLine 3 string when the mode is set to ACCLCDTimeFormat. The string is edited using the numeric keys. The cursor automatically advances after entering each digit. In Standard time, cursor over to the corresponding display position and press the 2 ABC key to set it to am. Press the 7 PQRS key to set it to pm. Line 4 of the display is used to define the 3 soft keys. Only the UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW and three soft key entries are sent to the Controller in the ACCLCDKeyStroke numeric. All other keys are used locally by the xPDISPLAY for data entry and editing. After the Enter key is pressed, the xP Display validates the date time entered in line 3. If valid, the contents of line 3 are returned in ACCLCDAnswerString. If not valid, a short beep sounds and Invalid Entry is displayed briefly on line 4 before reverting back to the original line 4 contents. The cursor is displayed at the first offending character for invalid entries.

Password mode In this mode, the text on lines 1, 2 and 4 of the LCD display is determined by the strings ACCLCDDispLine1, ACCLCDDispLine2, and ACCLCDDispLine4. The user can then enter a numeric password, up to 16 characters long, on Line 3. As the numeric keys are pressed, asterisks are displayed to hide the password from unwanted viewing. The cursor auto-advances (*) in Password mode. Only numeric entries are supported. While in Password mode, the LCDDisplayLine3 string is not used to seed the password entry. When entering Password mode, or exiting Password mode, ACCLCDAnswerStr is cleared to prevent unintended displaying of the password when the mode is changed. Pressing ENTER causes the password to be sent to the Controller in ACCLCDAnswerStr. After pressing ENTER, the asterisks remain on the screen until the Display Mode is changed. There is no editing of the password entry if the user makes a mistake entering the password, pressing CANCEL will clear the entire password and allow it to be re-entered. Line 4 of the display is determined by the string LCDDisplayLine4. The * key and the # key do not perform any function in this mode. Only the UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW and three soft key entries are sent to the Controller in the LCDKeyStroke numeric. All other keys are used locally by the display unit for data entry and editing.

Display Programming
The xPDISPLAY includes an LCD alphanumeric display capable of presenting information arranged as four lines of sixteen (16) characters per line. For improved readability in lowlight applications, the display includes an integral backlight that may be disabled when necessary. The xPDISPLAY can be used to display varying types of data. Displaying characters on the LCD requires: 1. You must set a particular mode of operation. Refer to the discussion of Display Modes found elsewhere in this manual. 2. Character data is loaded into the display via InfinityString variables, one for each line depending upon the Display mode. The following is a simple example for display programming: To display the message: WELCOME TO ANDOVER CONTINUUM

Set the ACCLCDDispMode numeric = 0 (Menu mode) Set ACCLCDDispLine 1 string = WELCOME TO Set ACCLCDDispLine 2 string = ANDOVER CONTINUUM There are sixteen characters on each line. To center a shorter text message within the line, surround the text with space characters.

Units Formatting
ACCLCDTimeFormat This Numeric contains an enumeration specifying whether the time is displayed in standard (0) or European (1) format. The default is standard format. These formats are as follows: Standard: European: mm/dd/yy hh:mm <am or pm> dd.mm.yy hh:mm NOTE: hh:mm is in 24-hour time

Display Backlight
ACCLCDBacklight Setting this variable to ON illuminates the backlight behind the display. To turn the backlight off, set the output to OFF. The module also supports a programmable backlight. To illuminate the backlight for a set period of time, set this variable to the number of seconds desired. The resolution of this time is specified in one-second increments with 65535 seconds being the maximum. A value of zero (0) turns the backlight off.

Keypad Programming
The xPDISPLAY includes twenty-one (21) push buttons that can be read through Plain English variables. There are two ways keypad information is retrieved from the xPDISPLAY. Depending upon the selected Display mode, single keystrokes or entire entries are sent.
Note: If a key is held down, the xPDISPLAY will auto-repeat the key after a short delay.

Data Entry
ACCLCDKeyStroke (Single Key Values) When the Display Mode is set to Menu mode, all key entries are returned to the Controller as they are pressed via the ACCLCDKeyStroke numeric. If the Display Mode is set to one of the four editing modes (Numeric, String, DateTime Data, Password), only the UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW and the three soft keys are returned to the Controller via the ACCLCDKeyStroke numeric. The value remains in the ACCLCDKeyStroke numeric for one scan. The following table indicates the button pushed and the resulting value:

ACCLCDAnswerStr (Multiple Key Edit Values) This String point contains the result of a change when in an editing mode (see Mode). It is filled when an Enter key press is detected at the keypad.

Keypad Sleep Mode


If the ACCLCDBacklight variable is set to OFF, the xPDISPLAY will not transmit any Key Stroke values after a key is pressed. Pressing a key in this state turns ON the backlight for a 30-second period. Further key presses within the 30-second* period reset the timer and their values are sent to the Controller. As long as the programmer does not force the backlight on during inactive times, a simple automatic sleep mode can be activated. The user, upon arriving at the xPDISPLAY, touches any key to wake-up the unit. The backlights illuminate. Subsequent key presses are sent as valid. Then, after a 30second period of inactivity, the xPDISPLAY goes back to sleep.
*This time may be adjusted in Setup Mode

Editing Keys
The * key inserts a space character and moves the cursor to the right. The # key acts as a DELETE key. When pressed the character above the cursor is deleted and the cursor moves one character to the left.

Auto-Accept
If no activity is detected for a brief interval, the xPDISPLAY automatically accepts the key entry and advances the cursor. The default time for Auto-Accept is 0.8 seconds, however, this time can be adjusted from 0.8 seconds to 5.0 seconds in the Setup Mode. The Auto Accept setting is set in 0.1 second increments. If a different key is pressed prior to Auto-Accept time expiration, the xPDISPLAY automatically shifts the cursor to the next position.

Troubleshooting
The following is a guide to follow should you decide the unit is not functioning properly:

Reset Button
If any of the following hints do not solve the problem it may be necessary to reset the module. The reset button is located as shown below.

No Display
If there is no information displayed on the LCD after power-up, then the unit may not be operating. Check that the program running the display is actually sending characters to the display. The display could be in a mode where no characters are displayed. Check that expansion cable is properly connected between the controller and the module. Check the view angle adjustment control (inside the cover). This may need to be adjusted for your lighting conditions.

Unit Appears Functional But Is Not Responding To Controller


If the LCD is displaying normally chances are that the unit is operational. However, in that the xPDISPLAY is a programmable unit, it is possible that there is a programming problem. Try to determine the source of the problem.

CPU Indicator Is Not Blinking


The CPU indicator flashes two times per second during normal operation. If the CPU indicator flashes ten times per second, the CPU has failed an internal test. In this case, recheck your connections and contact your Schneider Electric representative. If the CPU indicator is not blinking then the unit is not operating. This could be due to the loss of primary power or other internal dysfunction. Check that expansion cable is connected properly between the controller and the xPDISPLAY module. If the connection appears to be OK, remove power to the controller and reapply power to see if it will reset.
