RECENT crimes reported in this area
include:
Elder Drive The outer pane of a ground
oor doubleglazed window was damaged.
St Marks Road An unlocked Claude
Butler bicycle was stolen from an alley.
Vernay Green Someone jumped onto
the bonnet and roof of a VW Caddy van and
smashed the windscreen.
Glan Aber Park Thieves broke into
a rear outbuilding and stole two bicycles
valued at 1,900.
City Arms pub - Golf clubs were used to
smash four windows.
Lache Hall Crescent - Sunglasses and
face cream stolen from inside a car.
Hampton Road A black Peugeot scooter
was stolen and loaded into the back of a
small white van.
Queens Park View - Two aluminium
ramps were stolen from the bin room of
premises.

Primary school celebrates 40th anniversary
2012 is the 40th anniversary of the opening of St Clares Catholic Primary School here in
Lache.
Originally St Franciss School, in Cuppin Street, the school log book from the time records
that the new school opened in April 1972 as St Clares Roman Catholic Aided Combined
and Middle School.
Head teacher Terry Daltrey said: The log book makes very interesting reading, and records
many signicant events, not just for the school, but for the local and wider community.
They also have a Punishment Book for St. Franciss School dating from 1928!
To celebrate the occasion the school is working with all the children to research the history
of the last 40 years, and this will culminate in a special open afternoon, to be held on
Thursday 6th December starting at 1pm.
Any past pupils, parents and staff of St Clares or St. Franciss are welcome.
A 70s Day and Disco will be held for current pupils and staff on Friday 7th December.
Inspection joy for pre-school
EDUCATION inspectors have given the seal of approval to the Leaps and Bounds Pre-
School in Eccleston. The Ofsted inspection found that the pre-school on Church Road was
good and that the childrens behaviour was excellent.
Henry is the top hound
HENRY the long haired Chihuahua, from Handbridge, was named the top dog in the
Halloween Hound competition run by photographer Sam Ryley and Tails of the City pet
grooming.
Assault in the Lache
POLICE are investigating a violent assault in Cliveden Road, Lache , last month. A 33-year-
old man was knocked to the ground and punched and kicked by two men.
The victim suffered severe bruising and a suspected punctured lung as a result of the
assault and required hospital treatment.

Local policing priorities have been set following engagement
with the local community and based on information fed back at
surgeries held with local residents:
Number 16 Bus
Issues have been raised concerning the anti
social behaviour of a number of school children
who use the number 16 bus.
Plans to address the issue:
PCSO Jo Pendrey along with colleagues PCSO Rachael
McKevitt and PCSO Chris Fox have been riding the bus
for the last 2 weeks in order to identify individuals involved.
This will continue after the half term break and any
individuals found responsible for any anti social behaviour
will be dealt with accordingly. The local schools have also
been notied of these incidents and have advised pupils
about their behaviour outside of school. We are working
closely with the schools and Bus Company in order to
resolve these issues.
Saltney Post Ofce - 9-10.15am & 1.15-2.15pm
Westminster Park Shops - 10.30- 1.45am
Handbridge Old Dee Bridge - 12-1pm

the Park were advised and
moved on from the location.

Having experienced both a full body massage

recommend them. The hour-long full body mas-
sage was pure bliss, it eased tension, I felt very
relaxed and came away feeling refreshed albeit
very sleepy!
Sophie, who carried out my luxurious pedicure,
was very precise, my feet were exfoliated, mas-
saged, cuticles were neatened and nails were iled
and polished with a gorgeous range of colours to
choose from.

Roast Ribeye of Beef with
Chestnut and Chive Butter,
Caramelised Parsnips and
Leeks Serves: 6-8
Cooking Time per 450g/1Ib :
Rare - 20 mins plus 20 mins /
Medium - 25 mins plus 25 mins /
Well done - 30 mins plus 30 mins
Ingredients:
1.3kg-1.8kg / 3-4Ibs Ribeye of Beef
(Sirloin or Rib on the Bone can be
substituted)
75g/3oz unsalted butter, softened
75g/3oz canned, unsweetened
chestnut puree
Grated zest of 2 oranges
5ml/1tsp ground cinnamon
30ml/2tbsp freshly chopped chives
Salt and freshly milled black pepper
900g/2Ib leeks, topped, tailed and
cut in half lengthways
900g/2Ib medium parsnips, peeled
and cut in half lengthways
60ml/4tbsp sherry vinegar
For the red wine gravy:
25g/1oz plain or sauce lour
450ml/ pint good, hot beef stock
300ml/ pint full bodied red wine
Recipe:
1. Preheat oven to Gas mark 4-5,
180-190c
2. Prepare the chestnut and chive
butter; in a small bowl mix together
the butter, chestnut puree, orange
zest, cinnamon and chives.
3. Place the joint on a chopping
board, score the skin, season on both
sides and spread generously with the
chestnut butter.
4. Transfer the joint to a metal rack
in a large non-stick roasting tin
and open roast for the preferred,
calculated cooking time, basting
occasionally with any meat juices.
Cover with foil if browning too
quickly.
5. 45 minutes before the end of the
cooking time, remove the joint and
rack from the tin, add the parsnips
and leeks to the tin with the sherry
vinegar and gently shake. Place
the joint directly on top of the
vegetables, and return to the oven
for the remainder of the cooking
time.
6. Remove the joint from the tin with
the vegetables and transfer to a
warmed platter. Cover and set aside
to rest.
7. Prepare the gravy; spoon off any
excess fat from the roasting tin and
discard. Place the tin over a medium
heat and sprinkle over the lour. Stir
well with a small whisk or spoon,
add a little stock and stir again,
scraping the base of the pan to
release any rich, beefy sediment.
8 Add the remaining stock, wine and
any meat juices from the platter,
adjust the seasoning if required and
simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring
occasionally until reduced to a
well-lavoured gravy. Strain before
serving.
9. Serve with potatoes, the
caramelised vegetables and the
gravy.

A LACHE Junior Football Club with teams entered in the local junior leagues
could become a reality in Chester for next season following a successful
Football Frenzy event.
Parents came along to support their children at Lache Primary School Field
and watched them being trained in football skills and competing in mini soccer
games.
This type of event not only helps the children learn the necessary football
skills but develops their co-ordination and team working skills combined with
healthy exercise and fun.
Afterwards at Lache Community Centre everyone who took part and helpers
were awarded a certicate presented by Levi Mackin who plays for Chester
Football Club.
Following their successful year of winning The Tom Gerraghty Memorial cup
and The C&DFA Challenge cup and also winning the Division 2 league, Lache
FC wants to provide football for younger children.
Errol Stephenson Tyrell director of Genesis Training provided the necessary
support and guidance for local coaches Dan Burns, Tom Bailey, Matthew
Roberts and Kieran Spain with members of Lache FC to facilitate the event.
The girls were not to be out done by the boys and several joined in to play
while Lizzy McGovern and Nay-Levi Tyrell provided the administration support
making sure all the paperwork was completed and certicates printed.
Lache Councillor Alex Tate said: Many local people came together to provide
this event for the children, supported by their parents.
I really hope that by working together the junior football team will be
developed and become a reality and that the players will go on to be as
successful as Lache FC.

Staggeringly there are nearly 10 million
people in the United Kingdom who suffer from
some form of hearing loss with 170,000
people suffering with noise related deafness
or tinnitus as a result of exposure to
excessive noise at work. These conditions
are permanent and the over 50s are
significantly affected by this condition.
Hearing loss is a common injury that can
remain unnoticed for years as it develops
gradually and people often put it down to age.

Tinnitus is the medical name for those
suffering from a buzzing or ringing noise in
their head. Approximately one in seven
people are known sufferers of tinnitus. The
condition is believed to originate from over-
active nerve cells within the hearing area of
the brain.
Employers have been under a duty to protect
employees from excessive noise since 1963.
This means that in many cases, those
suffering from noise induced hearing loss
and/or tinnitus can make a claim for
compensation against the employers, or
where they are no longer trading, their
insurers.

some people feel it is more difficult to move
around as easily as they used to. This is
highlighted in a new study by the Johns
Hopkins University School of Medicine that
showed mild hearing loss can so much as
triple the risk of a person suffering from a fall.
The study believes that the reason for this is
the brains inability to focus as much as it
normally would on balance and gait, when it
is struggling with processing sounds. The
findings highlight that people with only a mild
hearing loss, at around 25dB, were
staggeringly at least 3 times more likely to
fall.

Nina fnally masters
TV quiz show
FORMER Catholic High School student Nina Fetherston
totally redeemed herself in her second appearance on a
TV quiz show.
Nina, who attended the Catholic High School from 2004
to 2011, was part of a team from Cambridge University
who were soundly beaten on University Challenge.
Jesus College Cambridge were defeated by 225 points to
80 against Imperial College.
Undaunted, Nina made a second signicant television
appearance once again, in September, this time on
Mastermind. Using her specialist subject Guns n roses,
she notched up a healthy score in round one and improved
on this in round two, the general knowledge round. She
was beaten at the last minute in to joint second place by a
rather more experienced man but still has the possibility of
a runner up place in the nals.
Nina summed up her experience in the limelight: After an unsuccessful foray into TV quiz
shows as part of the Jesus College Cambridge team for this years University Challenge, I felt
compelled to attempt to win back some quizzing integrity.
Deciding to do this via Mastermind, I submitted my application form in an air of somewhat
less-than seriousness. My reason for wanting to be on? I want to sit in the chair.
Two weeks later I was at an interview in the BBC Studios in London, being informed my
chosen specialist subject had either been done before (Father Ted), or was too obscure (the TV
show Entourage), so I was left with my remaining option Guns N Roses. Somehow, this less
than classy subject was accepted, and lming was set for July. I wish I could say I threw myself
into the revision process. I didnt. I read a couple of books,, I scanned their Wikipedia pages a
few times, and made a mental note of some obscure facts, but I took it all as un-seriously as
possible.
This felt like a slight mistake when it actually got to lming. I felt like a bit of an anomaly
admitting my subject a band famous for kicking members out and starting riots is hardly up
there with cricket, art, or the Hornblower novels the subjects of my competitors. Everything
was going ne until we sat in the chairs, the lights went down, and the theme music played. I
became uncomfortably aware of the fact that a large amount of the British public was going to
see me make a fool of myself for the second time that year. This feeling did not go away after the
specialist subject round, where I managed to nish in glorious fourth (I maintain they should have
given me Reading when the answer was Leeds.)
However, things improved on the general knowledge round. Despite it highlighting my lack of
knowledge about French cooking and Spanish geography, I did manage to claw my way back
and into the lead until the last contestant who resoundingly beat me with 29 to my 25. I cant
say Im upset though one time in the chair is enough.
I got to meet John Humphrys and full my ambition of sitting in the chair it was just an average
chair, on reection.

DECEMBER is a quiet time in the R
garden but there are plants that will
lift the spirit by the beauty of the
form, foliage or owers. Berries on
trees and shrubs give Christmas cheer
and this year there has been a good
show.
I love the varieties of Cotoneaster with
their cheerful red berries. Cotoneaster
horizontalis has herring bone like stems that
grow at against walls. Red berries remain
on the stems for a while after the leaves
have dropped giving a lovely effect against
a fence or wall. Larger Cotoneasters such
a Cotoneaster frigidus Cornubia is a shrub
which is semi evergreen and has clusters of red
berries till the birds eat them in cold weather.
Cotoneaster lacteus is evergreen with arching
branches laden with red berries and looks
stunning as a specimen small tree in a lawn.
Most Cotoneasters have white owers in early
spring and their leaves colour well in autumn
plus the bonus of berries in winter so think
about having one in your garden.
Beautiful bark is a feature of winter and the
pale cream or white of silver birches is well
worth seeing against a dark background.
Other trees with beautiful bark are the Acers,
especially Acer griseum with peeling coppery
bark which is a good tree for a sheltered spot
in smaller gardens. Similar copper colour
comes from Prunus serrula bark which has
a smooth texture and polish to the bark that
the Acer griseum lacks. Snake bark Acers such
as Acer davidii (Snakebark Acer) and Acer
pensylvanicum (Striped maple) have green and
white striped bark.
Frost on plants looks fresh and sparkling on
Holly or Heuchera plants. Heucheras tend to
keep some of their foliage in winter making
them valuable perennials for year round
interest. The photo of Heuchera Rufes with
frosted leaves is beautiful picture on a crisp
sunny morning.
Continue to tidy up in the garden by cutting
down dead foliage and pruning overgrown
shrubs. Make sure plants like Hostas,
Rodgersias and Paeonies, with their large leaf
buds, have a mulch of well rotted manure over
and around their crowns to protect them from
frost.
Weed the vegetable beds and add a layer of
organic matter such as well rotted manure. No
need to dig it in just let the worms take it down
into the soil for you.
