There are places to visit near Bangalore which are at a driving distance during weekend breaks for trekking, camping, river-side picnic or safari. This list covers places which are less than 100 Kms from Bangalore so that you dont spent too much time in travelling and have ample time to enjoy. If you want to take a short break to kill the weekend boredom or go out for team outing or team bonding trip here is a list of places to choose from. http://blog.travelnride.com 1. Devarayanadurga: A rocky hill near Tumkur is surrounded by forest and dotted with many temples like Yoganarasimha and the Bhoganarasimha temples. Trekkers would like this place as there area series of hills which are easily trekkable. Its around 70 Kms from Bangalore on Tumkur road. Route: Bangalore Nelamangala Dabaspet Devarayanadurga. 2. Sivaganga: This is another conical shaped hill in the same direction as Devarayanadurga. There are temples dedicated to Gangadhara and Honnadevi. There is a fresh water spring called Pathala Ganga. Trekkers would like this place as the trek to top of the hill after the temples is quite a challenge as the path is quite steep. The steel bar railing would help you climb this steepy part of the hill, however its worth it for the breathtaking view at the top. Route: Bangalore Nelamangala Dabaspet Sivaganga 3. Savandurga; considered to be the largest monolith hills in the world, has two hills known as Karigudda (black hill) and Biligudda (white hill). Rock climbers, cave explorers, adventurer enthusiast and trekkers frequent this place. Many Bangalore Based private adventure tourism companies organize activities here. Route : Bangalore Magadi Naykanapalya Savanadurga. 4. Manchanabele Reservoir: One of the best places for a day picnic near Bangalore. This dam on river Arkavati and the backwaters surrounded by stone structured rugged hills adds beauty to this place. Route: Bangalore Mysore road Dodda Alada Mara Bayalu Village Manchanabele dam 5. Kanva Reservoir: Located 65 Kms from Bangalore this reservoir has been formed because of the Kanva Dam built across the river Kanva. It nests lots of migratory birds and good for bird watching. Route: Bangalore Mysore road Ramnagaram Kengal Kanva reservoir. 6. Kokkarebellur Bird Sanctuary : This place is known for its unique binding of the people of this village and the birds. Kokkarebellur has nesting trees and migration of birds, large colonies of Spot-billed Pelicans and PaintedStorks can be seen here. Best time to visit is between Feb to May. Route: Bangalore Mysore road Channapatna Halagur(5Kms before Maddur) Kokkarebellur 7. Nandi Hills: Nandi hills is a popular hangout for Bangalooreans. It is a hill 1478m above sea level. Its a good option for somebody looking to go for a long drive in weekend. Best to be visited early morning and dont miss the ancient Bhoganandeeswara temple at the foothill. Documented records of sighting of 2000 water birds of 29 species have been reported. Its frequented by bird watcher & photographers from Bangalore. Route: Bangalore Tumkur Road - Peenya Hesaraghatta cross Hesaraghatta . 9. Big Banyan Tree : Also known as Dodda Alada Mara in Kannada is a 400 year old giant Banyan Tree in the village of Ramohalli. At 20 Kms this place is the closest picnic spot from Bangaloreans. Route: Bangalore Mysore road Kengeri Raja Rajeswari college Big Banyan Tree . 10. Bannerghatta National Park: Located 25 Kms on busy Bannerghatta road, this is the most visited weekend location by Bangaloreans. The zoo has a rich variety of animals, reptiles and birds. The Butterfly park is a recent addition which hosts about 20 different species of butterflies. You can take the safari too. Route: Bangalore Bannerghatta Road Bannerghatta 11. Innovative Film City: Situated around 35 km from Bangalore on the Bangalore- Mysore highway. The attractions are many: Innovative studios, mock sets, a Ripleys Believe It or Not museum, 4D theatre, a toddlers den, an 18hole mini golf course, old-world talkies where the audience sits on sand/wooden benches/folding iron chairs to watch movies. Mavathur lake : Its a big beautiful lake which offers a variety of birds, bugs and butterflies. Its flocked with bird watcher & photographer during weekends.
