Clarke Annotated Bibliography: The First Year of Music Teaching Brand, M., Kupchynsky, J., Johnson E. L.

, Johnson M. D., Hunt A., Mortenson G. C., "Preparing to Teach Music in Today's Schools." National Association for Music Education. Web. November 18 2012.

This article seeks to educate prospective music educators about the demands, requirements, and situations that all first-year teachers must face. Each article explains a different aspect of first-year teaching, whether it be where to go for help, what kind of repertoire to choose, or how to become acquainted with students, parents, and faculty.

I find this article to be extremely helpful. Throughout my collegiate years, I have gathered many questions about my first year of teaching, and this article touches on almost every aspect of those questions. The pointers within the article are coming straight from experienced music educators and what they deem as helpful to those entering music education for the first time; they have been there and gone through the same stresses, worries, and concerns that I will soon face. Their knowledge surpasses that of mine when it comes to planning, organizing, and coping with the stress that comes with first year teaching. I plan on saving this article for future reference. The National Association of Music Educators is a great organization and very well recognized within the music education community. I trust that this source is reliable because of their credentials and popularity.

Fredrickson, William E., and Rhonda S. Hackworth. "Analysis Of First-Year Music Teachers' Advice To Music Education Students." Applications Of Research In Music Education 23.2 (2005): 4-11. Academic Search Complete. Web. 18 Nov. 2012.

Within this article, Fredrickson analyzes many different aspects of teaching: what makes a great music teacher, how to prepare for a career in music education, and results from an experiment he conducted with first-year music educators across the nation. What he found was that first year music teachers did not comment much on the actual teaching of music, but focused more on the planning and carrying out of the lesson.

I find this article very useful because it contains evidence from real-life first year and experienced teachers. The facts stated in the article can help me focus on problem areas that all teachers face, and not just the arbitrary things. The goal of this article is to inform future educators about the intricacies in music education and provide statistical evidence backing up those statements. The source is reliable, for it states that Fredrickson is an associate professor at the University of Missouri- Kansas City's Conservatory of Music. He plainly lists his sources and cites them well throughout the article.
