A. Summary of the Lesson Plan This lesson introduces students to new vocabulary coupled with definitions. B. Student Population Grade level- 4th grade Skill level all-levels Grouping small group (indirect instruction) C. Materials 3D poster board Styrofoam board Pipe cleaners Vocabulary word bank worksheet (attached) Vocabulary paragraph worksheet (attached) Vocabulary word search (attached) Note cards Trophies textbook Thumbtacks D. Objectives Common Core State Standard L.4.2d Spell grade-appropriate words correctly, consulting references as needed. L.4.4a - Use context (e.g., definitions, examples, or restatements in text) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. Learning Targets Knowledge Targets Students must use knowledge of high frequency words to correctly spell gradeappropriate word. Students must determine the meaning of a word or phrase from context clues when reading and listening.

E. Procedure 1. As a class, we will revisit the section of Papa Tells Chita a Story. 2. Students will break off into small groups for learning centers. 3. At the Vocabulary Learning Center students will complete the following procedures: a. Students will pair up to complete the memory game or the Styrofoam board. After students finish up they will swap activities. b. For the memory game students will play a simple game of memory in which students will have to match vocabulary words with their definitions. c. For the Styrofoam board students will be matching each vocabulary word with a synonym by utilizing pipe cleaners to connect the words.

d. Following completion of these activities students will complete the word bank worksheet individually. The word bank worksheet consists of fill in the blank sentences using the vocabulary words. e. Finally, students will write a paragraph using all 7 vocabulary words. f. If students finish early they will work on vocabulary word search. 4. Students will rotate to a new center on teachers command F. Assessment Students will be spot checked during centers for participation and good behavior. Students will turn in word bank worksheet and vocabulary paragraph (checking for if students used the words in the right context). G. Reflection Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest to teach? The easiest part should be explaining the games. Most 4th grade students have played memory before, and even if they havent, its an easy game to teach. Also, the Styrofoam matching activity is simple to explain as well. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the most challenging to teach? The paragraph will be the most challenging part of this lesson. It wont necessarily be tough to teach (just tell them what to do), but grading and the students actually doing it might be difficult. The paragraphs could possibly be all over the place. I wont expect to have much flow to them either. What lesson or concept should be taught prior to this lesson? The students will need to have read the Papa Tells Chita a Story story before they do these centers. Students will also need to know how centers work and whats expected of them at each center prior to this lesson. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? Teacher will follow up this lesson the following day. Teacher will revisit the activities and get feedback. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For the students who dont grasp it, I will spend extra time with them. Since this is a vocabulary activity, if the students practice and study, they will eventually understand it. I could even make flash cards for the struggling students. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? Whether or not to have the kids work with partners. The activities at the centers are fairly simple. It may be too simple for students if theyre working in partners. Also, if a group has an odd amount of students, it could cause confusion.

When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? Finding the standard that coincides with our actual activities was pretty difficult. There wasnt an exact standard that matched our lesson. So finding a standard for our lesson took quite a while.
