Kerry Keane, Head of Musical Instruments Department, said: The cultural highlight of the sale was the late Doc Watsons personal Gallagher G-50 guitar, which garnered interest over a dozen bidders who drove the price to a world auction record $40,000 for a Gallagher guitar. We are delighted to announce actor and musician, Ed Helms, as the successful buyer. With his strong passion and commitment to bluegrass music he recognized the significance of the Doc Watson guitar. The entire sale was supported by international bidding from the phones, in the room, and 48% of lots were purchased or directly underbid by a Christie's LIVE client. Among the fretted instruments, 90% were sold by lot. Fine French bows continue to dominate the market amongst buyers appeal. Strong prices were achieved for bows by Eugne Nicolas Sartory, tienne Pajeot, Victor Franois Ftique, and a Joseph Henry, which made a world auction record for the maker. Among the stringed instruments, it was the Italians who outperformed all others including Enrico Rocca, which achieved a world auction record for the artist, and strong prices seen for Niccolo Gagliano, Carlo Tononi, and Carlo Bisiach.
