Faith teaches us that God the universal Lord is also the Lord of Time; that He alone appoints the proper hour to everything; that we must place the success of all endeavors in His hands; that we must believe in the possibility of success though no pledge of it be visible to the human eye; and that consequently we must labor for the kingdom of God whatever the odds seem to be.
from Transformation in Christ, Dietrich von Hildebrand
DIOCESE OF PENSACOLA-TALLAHASSEE
December 2012 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: In his Prayer for Generosity, St. Ignatius of Loyola asks for guidance in living selflessly. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost to labor and not to ask for reward, save that of knowing that I do your will. This prayer comes to mind as I reflect on the faithful service of our nations elder religious. These women and menCatholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priestsnever stopped to count the cost as they educated the young, cared for the sick, and sought justice for the oppressed. In so doing, they made an inestimable contribution to the Church in the United States, establishing Catholic schools, hospitals, and social service agencies. Today, many senior religious continue to manifest Gods love and generosity be serving in a wide range of volunteer activities. Others, though sometimes frail and infirm, remain dedicated to a ministry of prayer. Nearly all are challenged by the rising cost of care. Most elder religious worked for years for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. A majority of religious communities now struggle to provide necessary medications, nursing care, and basic services for their older members. The weekend of December 8-9 our parishes will be conducting the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, an opportunity for each of us to emulate the generosity exemplified by our senior religious. I understand many of you have financial difficulties of your own; I ask simply that you give what you can. Please join me in supporting the Retirement Fund for Religious and in praying for Gods continued blessing on our nations elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Victory in Jesus

St. John teaches us how to discern between good and bad spirits by saying, every spirit which confesses that Jess Christ has come in the flesh is of God [and] every spirit which does not confess Jesus is the spirit of antichrist (1 Jn 4:2-3). In this passage, St. John is referring to a heretical kind of super-spiritualism, can sometimes take the form of a refusal to accept the victory of Christ. The incarnationChrist come in the fleshembraces the whole of Christs life, ministry, passion, death, resurrection, ascension, and reign at the right hand of the Father in heaven. When Jesus tells us to take up our crosses daily (Lk 9:23), he doesnt mean that we are to suffer continually. He means that to enter into the Resurrection, we must first enter into the passion. As Catholics, we can sometimes be tempted to embrace suffering for its own sake, as though our Christianity is only a kind of stoical [sic] self-denial. This can even take the form of a kind of complacency with failure. By virtue of our baptism, we have the power we need to resist the devil and his harassments. Jesus gives us power over demons and victory over sin and death, and we need to be on guard against a spiritual defeatism that is the counterfeit of humility. The saints have always generously embraced the cross because they held tightly to Jesus promises that greater works than these will he do (Jn 14:12), and I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (Jn 10:10). Jesus is the Lord of time and history, not just of heaven; the here, not just the hereafter. To live in his Lordship is to live in his victory! Action Step Next time you feel beset by difficulties or discouragement, find a private place to pray aloud Psalm 30, which begins, I will extol thee, O Lord, for thou hast drawn me up, and hast not let my foes rejoice over me. Prayers of praise remind us of Gods victoryand oursin Christ. Our next RCIA class will be Wednesday, December 5, at 7pm in the St. Anne room of the Family Life Center. We will begin the unit on the history of the Church and its structure and organization.
