Lesson Topic: Math Topic 2 2-2 Adding on a Hundred Chart Description of Classroom:
3rd Grade 14 Girls & 10 Boys 24 Total 6 Tables/ 4 Students each table 8-9 Age Range

Background:
This lesson is at the beginning of Topic 2 in Unit 1. Will be taught for one day.

Content Objective(s):

SWBAT use a hundred chart to add two-digit numbers and develop mental math strategies.

Language Objective(s):
SWBAT write addition problems and use a hundreds chart to solve problem. SWBAT share responses with peers their answers and how they solved it. SWBAT read a hundred chart and use it to solve addition problems. SWBAT listen on how to use a hundred charts and listen to their peers as they discuss their method of solving the problem.

Nevada Standards:

NV 1.3.8b - Model addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in a variety of ways. NV 1.3.5a - Immediately recall and use addition and subtraction facts. NV 2.3.2a - Model, explain, and solve open number sentences involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts. 3.NBT.2 - Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Addends Sum Hundred chart

Teaching Strategies:
I will use Cooperative learning in this lesson. I will instruct and model how to use a hundreds chart. During the lesson, students will use the Kagan strategy Number Heads Together. Students will do belly work with their white boards to solve the problem. Once students have their answer, they will stand until all members are done. Once they are done, they will show their boards and discuss how they solved their problem. If a student has the wrong answer, the others will coach the student on how to answer the problem correctly. After all students have shared, I will choose a team member number to stand, hold out their boards, and show their answer to the class.

Warm Up Activity:

TW do Number Talks Category 2: Making Tens 4th box p.187. TW write one problem on the Smartboard. SW quietly think of the easiest strategy to find the answer. When students are ready, they are to put thumbs up to chest. TW write the students answers on the board and ask students to explain how they figured their answer. Responses will vary. The purpose is to find the easiest strategy making tens to find the solution. There are 3 problems given. Set the Purpose: Tell students that they know how to add one-digit numbers. Today they will use patterns on the hundred charts to add two-digit numbers. Connect: When might you add two two-digit numbers? 1. Pose the problem to the students by asking them this question: suppose one third-grade class has 32 students and another class has 24 students. How might you use the hundred chart to add the two numbers? Provide a hundred chart for each pair of students. Give students time to use the chart to find the sum. Have students share the methods they used. 2. Link prior knowledge-Look at the hundred chart. What patterns do you notice? How does each number compare to the number above it? [Each number is 10 more than the number above it.] 3. Write 32 + 24 =__ on the smart board. Tell students to find 32 on the chart. How many tens and ones are in 24? [2 tens, 4 ones] How many rows should you go down 32? [ 2 rows] What number on the chart is 2 tens more than 32? [56] Complete the number sentence . 4. Repeat to find 38+ 24. Explain to students that they need to continue on to the next row in the chart when counting on the ones. Then discuss how they found the answer. Listen for students who added 20 and subtracted 1. 5. Have students work in pairs with problems: 24+39=__, 72+19__, 48+24__, 59+29__. 6. For guided practice work on problems 1-8 even.

Lesson Sequence:

7. Using Number Heads Together, students will work on problems 11-18 using their white boards. Refer to Teaching strategies for description.

Accommodations:

I will meet all students accommodations. If students are struggling, I will pull back into small group at the kidney table. Hundred Charts Math textbook Practice worksheet White boards SW work on practice worksheet Observations

Supplementary Materials:

Review/Assessment: Reflection:
I have not taught this lesson yet, but I do strongly believe it will be successful. The warm-up is pretty selfexplanatory therefore the rest of the lesson should be easy to teach.
