930 Los Angeles, CA 90010 Dear Spoon (Britt and Jim), Im a big fan of your music, and have to congratulate you on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, in my opinion your best album since 1998s A Series of Sneaks. But although this letter is partly just a good old fashioned, slap-on-theback, keep-up-the-good-work fan letter, I also write with a question or two about the title of your latest record. Im currently competing a Cultural Studies degree at the University of Melbourne, and am doing an essay entitled fashions and fads in album names since 1986. Okay I admit it, we got to choose our own topic for this third year final semester research project, and I chose this one, promising a sceptical Mr Sam Pang (hes our tutor) that there have been meaningful and measurable patterns in album titles over the last 22 years. Why choose 1986? To be honest, it was just a random date. It means that Im looking at 21 years, a solid chunk of time, and it also means that the Tears For Fears album Songs from the Big Chair, the album title that in my opinion stands astride the world of album titles titles like the Colossus of Rhodes, is consigned to an earlier era. Ive noticed that in the last little while, we have been moving into what Im calling the Era of Sonic Repetition. I quite like the feel of it, even if it has made some tracks very difficult for the DJs to back announce. Spank Rock had the album Yo Yo Yo Yo Yo, released through Big Dada in 2006. Junior Senior had Hey Hey My My Yeah Yeah which even contained a Sonic Repetitious offering in Can I Get Get Get. And then of course there is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who have used sonic repetition in their band name (irrelevant for the purposes of my essay) but did at least go with the a self-titled EP in 2001, catapulting them to the top of my list.

My questions to you are: How did you think of the title Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga? Have you had any trouble with reviewers writing either 4 Gas, or 6 Gas? Was it a conscious decision by Spoon to join the Sonic Repetition movement? Can you think of any examples of Sonic Repetition that I have missed? Will you stick with Sonic Repetition in your next album title?

And on an unrelated topic, when you toured Australia in 2004 and played a gig at the Corner Hotel, why didnt you play, Stay Dont Go which is just a kick arse track, and the one which 85% of the room was busting to hear.
