Preface We cant imagine life on earth without water because it is such a unique component of nature which is having a vital

role at micro to macro level in different life processes. Water as a medium is ideal for most of the living organisms on earth. Water availability on earth is abundant but most of it is in the form of salty water in oceans. Fresh water resources are limited and they are now continuously shrinking and degrading because of excessive exploitation by human beings. From ancient times people were concerned about the water quality so methods to conserve fresh water resources were written in various Vedic as well as historic scriptures. Since the historic times, Kings as well as other renowned personalities were taken certain important steps to conserve and use these fresh water reservoirs sustainably. Those places where there was scarcity of water, people digged ponds, taalabs etc. to store rain water which otherwise went to oceans as run-off. The pond ecosystem is a fresh water environment that can reveal the health of a local area. Specific life forms of fresh water environments such as the pond ecosystem show its overall health. Toxins or pollution can effect the pond ecosystem adversely. The importance of understanding the pond ecosystem involves the life forms and plant cultures that are part of the healthy environment. Agriculture and the impact of human activity on the pond ecosystem can effect the quality and purity of soil and water. Fertilizer, oil, introduced species, pollution; fishing can all upset the delicate balance that exists in a healthy pond ecosystem. In this book, we have taken Paniyala pond which is a very much important source for nearby people of that area. This book presents an overview of pollution in pond ecosystem. Through this book we have tried to determine the present status of Paniyala pond, their conservation strategies etc.

ABOUT BOOK The present book Ecology of Fish Pond greatly emphasize on the aquatic ecology of pond ecosystem. Pond ecosystem is of much importance as it is very useful for fish culture. So this book could provide necessary information to the people involved in fish culture for making the sustainable use of water resources. The monthly fluctuation of different parameters is presented and discussed about their relation with plankton, benthic fauna as well as ichthyofauna. In addition to this, the data given in this book is a documentation which could be of great help to the Limnologist, Biologist, Environmentalist as well as students working in the field of river water ecosystem.
