Philosophy Of Distance Education

istance education aims to deliver education to students who could not be physically present in a class rooms. The main advantage of distance education is that students have got the flexibility to learn the courses in a convenient way with the aid of internet, VSAT, weekend counseling sessions and specially designed course material. Students can also communicate through internet with teachers at their own time and can exchange the course content over the net. The Continuing and Distance Education programs were created to enable full time working professionals and opportunity to earn a respectable qualification in chosen areas of study. Distance education offers several benefits. The primary benefit of it being, that students who might not be able to take up full time courses due to time or financial constraints may easily take to distance education. Since the arrival of the internet, it has become extremely easy to take up distance education courses through the internet. Presently geographical boundaries have no meaning for wherever one may be sitting in the world; he/she can remain connected through the internet. If one has access to the internet then he/she can take up one of several distance education courses. Distance education is often termed as flexible learning as one can handle other commitments along with their studies. In Distance education an individual studies without attending the regular college. There is an advantage as an individual can study from home or remote area. The use of television, radio, and internet has further encouraged distance education. The consistent usage of both computers as well as internet has made distance learning fast and easy.

Distance education is also beneficial for the students over 21 years of age who mostly work full time during the classroom hours. These students require flexible learning schedule. They demand sufficient development opportunities to help them keep updated with todays ever-changing knowledge base. Youngsters in India most often in semi urban/rural areas are denied higher education due to their pre occupation for making both ends meet and hence find distance education a boon. Distance education is particularly beneficial for physically handicapped who will not be able to take up regular education. Distance education is suited for all class of people, young and old, poor and rich and can be had anywhere at any time. At the present juncture new opportunities like BPO, finance, banking, health care support services, call centers attract a lot of youngsters. People employed in these professions can pursue their higher studies and aim to full fill their craving for higher education, thus earning while they are learning. It is at this juncture distance education will be of great help, especially qualifying for higher education in Technology, Management, Hospitality and other allied programs.

Information Technology programs

Introduction: Information Technology has become an integral part of modern contemporary society. Information Technology has been extended to all the new areas, making its way from mathematical computation and data processing via office automation to electronic sectors. Information Technology is becoming so prominent that it is changing every aspect of human life in Trade, Commerce, Communication, Manufacturing, Service sector, Entertainment, Global Security and Education. Computer/information science is at the intellectual forefront of the digital revolution that will define the 21st century. That revolution is in its infancy but is visible all around us. New scientific, economic and social paradigms are arising from computing science and being felt across all sectors of the economy and society at large. Computers and computer science are an increasingly important part of all academic disciplines, from English to Engineering and Everything in between. The jobs of tomorrow will use technologies not yet invented. Such innovation requires dedication to learning, in the classroom, in the research laboratory, and through out ones professional career. Scientific discovery and technological innovation require mastery of the fundamentals of computing science as well as mastery of practical technical skills. Computer Science changes the world. Computer Science touches and transforms every aspect of our lives. Traditional industries and sciences rely more and more upon computer science, driving the rapid innovations we see in Medicine, Technology, Communications, Physical Sciences, Commerce, and Human Relationships. Computer Science a Philosophy: Computer science has two faces: Technological and philosophical. The practical focus is on solving problems with the aid of computer. The philosophical focus which is required to support the practice is on the study of language and its use in making precise and understandable descriptions of anything. A computing professional must be able to analyze a situation in an application domain in biology and medicine, business, engineering, law and public policy, science, sociology and allied fields. Techniques studied in the computer science curriculum include algorithms and data structures, programming languages, computer architecture, numerical and symbolic computation, computer graphics, operating systems, software engineering, systems analysis, database and information retrieval systems, artificial intelligence and robotics, and human-computer interfaces.

Delivery System For Academic Programmes

Support Services through study centers: Study centers are being set up all over the country and abroad to provide the candidates a platform to interact with counselors, other candidates and for use of the library. Candidates would be getting personal attention at these centers in addition to the hands-on-training on computers at these centers. Program Delivery: A multi-form of instruction has been adopted, comprising of: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Study material:Study material for all subjects will be in print and A/V CDs wherever necessary. Counselling Sessions: Will be held at Study centers, to suit the convenience of candidates. Practical Sessions: Will also be held at the study centers Assignments: For assessment, evaluation and for feedback of comprehension of study material. Project work: To enable the candidate to gain an insight into independent working on a practical project.

system is more learner-oriented, so much so, the candidate has to be invariably an active participant in the teaching-learning process. Most of the instructions are imparted through distance rather than face-to-face communication. The University follows a multi-channel approach for instructions suitably comprising the following: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Self-instructional Printed Material Audio and Video Material Website information Face-to-face Counseling at study centers by Academic Counselors Assignments Field based Projects

To start with, the courses will be delivered on Internet and conventional distance education mode. In due course, it will shift more and more towards on-line interaction between teacher and the taught. Skill and dexterity will be inculcated right from the beginning though interactive computer applications. Self Instructional Material: Printed materials are the primary form of instructional materials. These are supplied to the candidates in the form of books, CDs or in the form of e-book. The study materials are available on the internet, study centers and in the university. The study materials would be sufficient to the extent of about 70% to 75% to write any assignment and prepare for the term-end examinations. However, candidates are strongly advised to refer to other sources and texts, suggested under each unit in order to get a comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter.

Credit System: The University follows the Credit System for its under-graduate and post-graduate programmes. Each credit entails approximately 30 hours of study comprising of all activities. Thus, a 3-credit course involves 90 study hours. This helps the candidates to understand the academic efforts one has to put in suitably to complete the course. Instructional System: The methodology of instruction in this Open University is different from that of the conventional Universities. The Open University

Counseling Sessions: In distance education, face-to-face contact between the learners and their tutors/counselors is relatively less and therefore counseling is an important activity. The purpose of such a contact is to answer some of the questions and clarify doubts, which may not be possible through any other means of communication. There are experienced academic counselors at the study centers to provide counseling and guidance in the courses that are chosen for study. The candidate will be informed of the program schedule details by the study center Co-ordinators. It should be noted that the counseling sessions would be very different from the classroom teaching or lectures. Counselling does not mean delivering lectures as in conventional teaching. Counsellors will try to help overcome academic difficulties which one may face while going through the programmes. In these sessions one must try to resolve subject based difficulties and any other related problems. Before the candidate attends the counseling session, he/she should go through the course material and make notes of the points to be discussed. Unless the units are gone through, there may not be much to discuss. The Co-ordinator of the respective study center will make the detail schedule of the counseling session known to the candidates. Usually, at least 10% of the credit hours will be earmarked for the counseling session. Assignments: Assignments are an integral part of distance learning. The main purpose of assignments is to test the candidates comprehension of the learning materials received from the University and also to help better comprehension the courses by providing feedback. The information given in the printed course materials should be sufficient for answering the assignments. However, the candidate may have to refer to other books and references given in the

course material to have a compressive knowledge of the subject. But the assignments are generally designed in such a way as to help to concentrate mainly on the printed course material with a fleeting touch to other references. The candidate may also note the following points: 1. It is compulsory to submit the assignments and will not be allowed to appear for the term-end examination of a course if one does not submit the specified number of assignments in respective courses on time. All assignments should be submitted to the respective study centers The assignment responses should be complete in all respects. Before submission the candidate should ensure that one has answered all the questions in the assignments. Incomplete answer sheets will fetch poor grades/marks. The study center has the right to reject the assignments received after due date. Hence, the candidate is advised to submit the same before the due date. A copy of the valued assignments will be returned to the candidates along with the marks/grades and the written comments, which serve as a learning exercise for the candidates. Two per cent (2%) of the evaluated Assignments by the Academic Counsellors will be reviewed by the University from time to time.

2. 3.

4.

5.

6.

Practical Training: Considerable importance is given to hands-on training on computers in this programme. A set of practical exercise for subjects which need laboratory work is available at the study centers as also on the website. Candidate needs to do this practical exercise under the guidance of their study center faculty. Major part of the contact hours at the study centers will be devoted to this laboratory work.
