KOLANDOTO VILLAGE. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF KOLANDOTO VILLAGE. Kolandoto is a village located in shinyanga district, shinyanga region in Tanzania.

Its name originated from a sukuma word, which means a tree that existed and blossomed even during dry season.(kola simply means a certain tree while ndoto means ever green).by that time the village was lead by chief known as mtemi. Mtemi was the final decision maker in the community by that time. He could decide before the government. The chief was called chief Makwaya. kolandoto became mostly known in 19th century by the AIC missionaries. that was the time of colonial period. In 1913 the village was officially recognized by the Government.s Later on,23th Nov 1930, the AIC missionaries started up the health facilities in the village of kolandoto. With the help Williamson , the founder of Mwadui mining company. The hospital was located with and was officially given land by the community authority led by chief.23.2 acres was located to start with. The plot that was located to the missionaries, was then divided into three portion .the first partition was for the hospital, the second partition was for the church, and the third partition was for the learning institutions. This institution offered certificate in nursing and nurse attendance .later, the institution was registered into diploma in nursing program, including laboratory technician. Due to increment of services, the community kept expanding land to the church under the license of municipal council of shinynga Region. until now the institution of kolandoto has got 52 acres of land. GEOGRAPHICAL BOUNDARIES OF KOLANDOTO VILLAGE Kolandoto village is Located in shinyanga district,shinyanga Region. It is 14 km away from shinyanga town, one km away from the main high way of Mwanza shinyanga road on the east side. Kolandoto has got five sub-village namely;Mwamala,Mwamagunguli,kolandoto,Mwanubi and kisesa. Each subvillage is headed by sub-village chairman. TOTAL POPULATION Total number of people in kolandoto village is summarized on table shown below Which shows the the under five children, male and female. HEALTHY FACILITY DATA ON POPULATION

In terms of health provision, Kolandoto Hospital, especially the RCH department has its catchment area that covers the entire ward of Kolandoto. That is; Kolandoto, Mwamagunguli and imalabupina. The total population for health facility is 16,534. Total population under 1 year (01) year=600 Total population under 5 year (o5) year =3107 Total number ofPregnant mothers is = 600 The old age (> 65 years)----- 246

DISABLED PEOPLE IN KOLANDOTO VILLAGE

There is different disabled people in the community of kolandoto village.the table below shows the number , the gender and the type of disability in every individual.

The table above shows the number of people who are disble with different disabilities. The most and dangerous disability that affect the community is the deformity of body. From the assessment which was done it showed that this is due to leprosarium problems that affect the community. Kolandoto is the only healthy facilities that tries to rehabilitate the leprosaria patients.the are treated free, and other necessities offered from the institution and from the well wishers. SCHOOLS/COLLEGES Kolandotot village has got 2 primary schools, 1 secondary school that is also shared among the three villages and one college of health sciences. That owned by the AICT. PRIMARY SCHOOLS.

The two primary schools that is found in the village of kolandoto, each accommodate about 800 pupils. There is insufficiency of classrooms to accommodate all pupils at the same time leading to dividing the pupils to attend in school at different time. This affect the learning systemas also there is inadequate trained teachers who cant provide adequate services to all pupils due to exhortations of work. The schools doesnt have enough learning facilities like enough library,labolatory and also game facilities. These problems majorly affect the whole academic performance in those two primary schools. SECONDARY SCHOOLS. There is only one secondary school that is shared among three villages. It is located to the center of the three villages. This makes some students to walk to avery far distance going to school cddue to its location. As aresult, many student do drop away from school, and majorly the students are affected academically as all students are day scholars. Performance is also affected as most students do help their parents in farming activities especially the family whereby there is disabilities of either father or mother. The child is forced to remain at home to help their disabled parents causing her/his academic performances. Due to large number of students in the only one secondary school, there is inadequate teachers who can provide quality education to students .the school also lack educational facilities like library and the equipped laboratory. Many students do lose interest in studying sciences as there is no facilities for practical in sciences ending with selecting only art subjects. COLLEGES. There is one college of health sciences which is located in the centre of kolandoto village. It is owned by the AICT. The college offers Diploma in nursing, three years course, certificate in

laboratory Assistants, two years course and the year 2012, the institution succeed to start the certificate in nursing that takes two years course,to chatter for the demand of many candidates. HEALTHY FACILITY Kolandoto has only one healthy facility known as kolandoto hospital that is owned by the church of AICT. The hospital was started by missionaries in 19th century. The land to built the hospital was officially located to the hospital on 23rd Nov 1913 with only 23.2 acres of land. The hospital has the following partitions; maternity section ,OPD , female and male wards pediatric ward private ward ward, eye ward, main theatre, ophthalmic section, dental section, physiotherapy section, X-ray and Ultra sound section. Due to hospital being a private institution, the running activities should be from the contribution of services that is provided to the patients.

PHARMACEUTICAL SERVICES There are three small pharmacy that sell drugs to the community of kolandoto village. The shops arent selling expensive drugs, this affect the community to look for services from far when drug prescribed from the hospital are out of stock . there is a great need to have an equipped Pharmacy in the community of kolandoto village that can help them to obtain drugs at a near distance and due to presence of a hospital in the village.

HEALTH RELATED PROBLEMS IN KOLANDOTO VILLAGE. 1. Drinking unsafe and unclean water. 2. Poor environmental and personal hygiene due to insufficient water supply
3. Malnutrition to some families due to prolonged drought that mostly affect the farming

activities, hence lscking food


4. Malarial disease as a result of ignorance and false believes on the use of treated mosquito

nets. AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES The main agricultural activities in kolandoto village is farming and livestock keeping,

MAIN CROPS There is no cash crops in kolandoto. Instead, the village does sell food crops in order to get money for their necessities. The main food crops that are grown in the village of kolandoto include; Maize, Rice, sorghum, groundnuts and green vegetables. The farming takes place once annually due to long period of drought that occurs from march to October.

LIVESTOCK KEEPING The village does keep cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and poultry keeping like chicken, ducks and doves. Other domestic animal that is kept in the village of kolandoto include dogs for security, donkeys for carrying heavy luggages and domestic cats. The main problems that affect the livestock keeping in the village of kolandoto is lack pasture for the animals.(water and green grasses for the animals like cattles) the long drought do make land to become completely.most animal do die due to hunger and drought. SOURCES OF WATER The entire community of kolandoto have water problems. There is only one water source that was started by hospital.(water pump) the pump can not sufficient the entire community due to high population. Due to high demand of water in the healthy facilities the machine do get mechanical breakdown leading to absence of water. there is also small temporary water hole that the community do fetch water during rain season. SECURITY There is high security in the village of kolandoto. This is evidenced whereby the the property of individual like animal does left outside even during night. The security is enhanced by the community local policy locally known as sungusungu the community policy do work hand in hand with the government to promote security in the village it is located. The security group is answerable to the village chairman. REFERENCES.
