Conference Conversations:
How to get the most out of parent-teacher conferences
Desks in classrooms throughout the Chehalis School District will have parents and guardians sitting at them this month as parent-teacher conferences commence. Each family will have approximately 30 minutes to address concerns, celebrate student successes, listen as teachers share beginning of the year assessments, and set goals for the 2012-2013 school year. To get the most out of your childs conference try these tips for engaging in a positive, productive conversation. 1. Be specific. Go into the conference with an idea of what your child would like to achieve by the end of the school year. Write down 2-3 things your child would like to improve socially and academically. If you have concerns, write down the most pressing issue so it can be addressed. 2. Be positive. Focus on building positive goals and positive relationships for the upcoming school year. This begins with how you approach your childs teacher. She will be a partner in the next year. Greeting her with a smile and a handshake sets a comfortable and professional tone to the beginning of your conversation. 3. Stay focused. Try to avoid defending student behaviors or scores with statements such as,I was never good at math either. Move forward toward solutions centered on how your child will succeed and how to develop positive feelings toward school.

Touch-a-Truck a Great Success

In October Monica Brummer coordinated Touch-a-Truck. An awesome collection of vehicles gathered in the Olympic Elementary School parking lot so local children could look at, touch and clammer all over rigs that travel the roads of Chehalis. Thank you so much to Monica, Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES), Centralia Police Department, Chehalis Deli, Chehalis Fire Dept., Chehalis Police Department, Lewis County PUD, Lewis County Sheriffs Emergency Management Team, Olympic Elementary School, Starbucks, Veterans Memorial Museum, Washington Dept. of Transportation, PTA volunteers AND all of our guests and drivers.
