This Saturday, the Midwest Marxist Conference (http://www.chicagosocialists.org/content/2012midwestern-marxism-conference-schedule) was held at Northwestern Universitys Medill School of Journalism (http://www.medill.northwestern.edu). The event was teeming with teachers who spoke about the new found bond between the radical socialists and their Teachers Union. The all-day event, which collected money to support Chicago Socialists and featured a communist bookstore, provided students on-campus along with the radical left community to plan the next phase in their activism.
Becca Barnes (https://www.facebook.com/events/357297851022745/), a Chicago Teachers Union teacher and organizer with Chicago Socialists, proclaimed at the beginning of the conference that the struggle here in the United States has entered a new phase. Nowhere have we pointed the way forward more clearly than here in Chicago with the teachers union strike. After the opening plenary, breakout sessions addressed more specific topics like the history of the Democratic party, education, and case studies in Russia. In these sessions, speakers continued to celebrate the use of education as a mechanism to insert Marxism into public institutions. In one session, the idea of targeting their message to students, even over the working class, was debated.

Through a renewed focus on the strike weapon, Socialist organizers remarked that they felt their movement had rediscovered its vigorand the path forward ought to include mass strikes, they said. Eric Ruder (http://www.isreview.org/issues/70/feat-egypt.shtml) of the ISO spoke about the Socialists partnership with the Chicago Teachers Union during The Meaning of Marxism breakout session: There are big moments in the sort of chain of historical development that we have to be able to intervene... And in order to that, you need an organization. Thats really the sort of thing you saw in the Chicago teachers strike. In a situation where there was a huge struggle, our organization threw itself in the middle of that and had a demonstrable impact on it. Because weve been rooted, experienced activists who worked together in a collaborative way to try to build up that influence over the long haul I think when you get in revolutionary moment where your ability to quickly assess whats happening and make strategic and tactical shifts on the fly, that is essential. Working class revolutions have never succeeded without the existence of a revolutionary party thats capable of making those sorts of decisions and providing that kind of leadership. And thats what were asking you, the members of this group, to join and help in that process. We need you to be able to have enough size and influence to matter, but you need us to be able to be part of a force that could intervene in that sort of chain in historical development. Other speakers addressed perceived weaknesses in the Socialists messaging, including the need to shore up the high pay of union members and racism inherent at the AFL-CIO, which, according to participants, has been an historic problem. Others acknowledged that the general public seems to fear us and brainstormed ways to counter these fears. The event itself, though advertised online as via social media, retained a sense of extreme secrecy. Attendees were told not to record video or audio unless they had express permission from organizers. Rather than traditional discussions in the breakout sessions, we were instructed to raise your hand in a fist in order to be first approved and then added by a moderator to a queue to speak. This orthodoxy resulted in extremely disjointed Q&A sessions where no one comment followed another and most questions went unanswered. After attending the all-day event, which began at 11 a.m., I was singled out as not in solidarity by International Socialist Organization (ISO) organizer Dennis Kosuth (http://rebelpundit.com/2012/02/exclusive-video-chicago-teachers-union-pawnsprotest-rahm/) around 4 p.m, and removed from the premises for not being a Communist. Despite registering for the event, the group of socialists that removed me, including pre-school teacher Kirstin Roberts (http://kirstinroberts.com/resume.htm), social worker Alison McKenna (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/alison-mckenna/46/aa8/63a), printer Eric Kerl (http://www.isreview.org/issues/72/feat-anarchism.shtml), Socialist organizer Shaun Harkin (http://www.keywiki.org/index.php/Shaun_Harkin), and others. They surrounded me at the edge of a staircase, proceeded to push their way closer to me to force me down the stairs, and hurled insults at me as I attempted to find a way to leave safely. Even after leaving the conference, the group continued to bully me, with one larger man saying under his breath that you know what would happen at Teamsters meeting inferring a more violent solution to my presence:

While it may or may not come as a surprise that a radical leftist conference was held on the grounds of an esteemed U.S. university, it is ironic that when a journalist shows upat this school of journalism, no lessand they are summarily booted from just being at the conference. The mere presence of a journalist whom they could not trust to be in solidarity with communism was enough to send organizers into a frenzy to remove me immediately. What were the ISO and Northwestern University so intent on hiding from journalists and the general public? Was it that Haymarket Books, a revolutionary bookstore, was allowed to open up shop on campus and sell revolutionary reading materials? Was it the number of teachers in the house, and t-shirts for sale, supporting the teachers union strike? Or that the ISO was able to charge a fee, fundraise and recruit new members to their revolutionary cause on the Northwestern grounds, using an entire lecture hall and several classrooms? Perhaps it was all of the above, in addition to the fact that, together with leaders of the Chicago Teachers Union, Occupy Chicago and several other labor unions, these groups discussed how to achieve fundamental societal change. Change that included historical development, and the strategies required to overthrow the American system and replace it with a direct dictatorship of the working class over the means of production. Not the best message to send to Northwestern alums and prospective students. The International Socialists Organizations recruitment program isnt over after Saturdays conference at Northwestern University. Next week, the University of Wisconsin Madison will open its doors to the group (http://iso-madison.blogspot.com) to indoctrinate another crop of students ripe for the message of revolution.

No teacher who attended this conference should be allowed to keep their teaching credential. Period. The same with any member of our government - being a marxist is absolutely antithetical to the system we have and nobody can truthfully take or perform their oath of office if they believe in Marxism. It's ok for people to be Marxists, they just cannot have positions of trust such as teaching, the military, or any other government job.

Sure, there are individual teacher that do, but the union as an entity cares only about its power and its ideology. Dear Mr McCarthy, I just want to apologize for the way the American left behaved towards your prescient predictions of the Communist Party. Your accuracy in predicting the Communist take over of our institutions of Education is unparalleled and from that point every single aspect of American life. Govt, media, entertainment, unions, healthcare are now completely under this Communist control. This power structure now firmly in place and is an anathema to the fundamental freedoms guaranteed to Americans when the Country was founded. The Govt has reneged on this guarantee and that makes them no more my leaders than if Fidel Castro proclaimed it himself. They are an armed mob of criminals stealing our Private Property at will. The enemy is now easy to see America. The real problem with Mitt Romney was that he wasnt George Washington. America needs another just like him very soon or it will be too late... The POOR, the WORKER and the UNION are all Marxist code words for stealing more of YOUR money and using it to give themselves more power over your life.

Keep up with modern technology & you can find tiny audio as well as audio/video recorders that can easily be hidden yet produce serviceable results. Here's an example of a self-contained video camera with audio recording capability that's built into a pair of sunglasses http://www.galls.com/cgi/CGBCS... (no, I don't work for that company. This is just one of many examples that can be found for sale) Don't play by the Left's rules. You don't have to!

What is new about Northwester. In the 60s they were one of the Universities that had rallys against the war. As a veteran on the GI Bill ,the professors wanted us to join the rallys with an arm band. I said no way with majority of the class. If you study Saul Alinsky's book on radicals , the University is following the game plan of the book. School teachers love it. Here in Portsmouth RI about 100 school teachers with white shirts saying they were with Council 94 union,they intimated the board and senior citizens.It was complete chaos . They organized as in the book and voted them out.. It will be interesting how our taxs will be next year
