General Electric Sealed Beam lamps consist of a light source contained in an

enclosure made by hermetically sealing an accurately pressed reflector and lens
to provide
-beam an integral lighting unit. These lamps are available in a wide variety
patterns and inlensities that can be provided by proper choice of Iight
of
source and lens configuration.
Most Sealed Beam lamps are designed for operation on low voltage sources of
power, and are available in diameters of 4rlz,53l+,7 and 8 inches, known as
PAR-36. PAR-46, PAR-56, and PAR-64 bulbs respectively. Glass is of a
borosiliiate, heat-resistant t5,pe and the reflector is usuaily o1'parabolic construction with an aluminized reflecting inner surface.
Certain types of Sealed Beam lamps are available with a permanent yellow or
red lens finish.
Manufacturers and designers of equipment requiring Sealed Beam lamps
should select lamps of established design whenever possible for maximum economy as well as ease of replacement through regular trade channels. Lamps are
grouped according to the four bulb sizes. They are listed within each group by ascending order of design voltage.
The "Numerical Index" (on page 15) Iists lamps in numerical sequence, and
"Table of Applications" (page 1a) by type of service.

i TeATURES oF GE HEADLAMPs

Aimine Pletforms . are three glass pads molded in the lenses of

GE Headlamps to enable quick, accurate aiming with any aiming
machine. When the plane through the face of the three pads is
oriented perpendicular to the axis of the vehicle, the lamp is properly
aimed for safest road lighting.
GE Shield
covers the lower beam filament only, cutting off the
"uncontrolled upward light" which reflects back in motorists' eyes
during rain, snow and fog.
GE Shields are clamped to separate rods to protect the filament
during shock and vibration. If rods vibrate under road shock conditions, these forces will not be transmitted to the filament.
The Redesignecl-Lens-Reflector . . . combination directs light farther
GE

down the road. Passing is easier.

OnIy Generul Electric makes all of the individual parts that go
into headlamps - and even the machines are designed by GE
engineers, assuring maximum quality control.
There is no "spring action" to pull

the filaments out of focus.

action.

Heaviei Filament Wire is

stronger and lengthens the
lamp's service life.
Fog Shield over the filament is

mounted on a separate support to isolate its vibrations

from the filament assembly.

There is a General Electric

heavy duty lamp for most auto-

motive sockets. Heavy duty

lamps are designed with special

features (see illustration) to
grve longer life and more
troubl+.free performance than
standard lamps. These lamps
should be used where they are
llkely to be subject to extra
shock and vibration.

LAMP NUMBER
Lamps are marked with a General Electric
Trade No. recorded with the American National Standards Institute (formerly United
States of America Standards Institute). This
number completely identifies the lamp.

APPROXIMATE TOTAL SPREAD TO

10% MAXIMUM CANDLEPOWER
This column contains the listings of both
horizontal and vertical values of beam spread
for each lamp. The beam spread is given in
degrees for the total angle, vertical or horizontal, frorn l0% of maximum intensity on
one side of the beam center to L0% of maximum intensity on the other side of the beam

PRIMARY APPLICATION

center.

The primary application column lists the

present major service of each lamp. However,

lamps may be, and are, used in many other
applications where their design may prove
advantageous.

DESIGN VOLTS

This column lists the voltage at which the

lamp is designed for rated amperes, candlepower, and laboratory-life characteristics,
unless otherwise noted.

WATTS OR AMPS.

The current rating (amps) or power consumption (watts) at design voltage is listed in this
column. In the case of dual filament lamps,
values for each filament are given.

FILAMENT SHIELDING
General Electric Head, Fog, Aircraft, Spotlight and other sealed beams incorporate
filament shields as a means of controlling
scattered light. Uncontrolled upward light
can reflect back into the motorist's eyes from
snow, rain and fog resulting in reduced
visibility.

MAXIMUM OVER-ALL LEt\GTH

Rated average life is that obtained in closely
controlled laboratory testing of lamps on 60

Hertz alternating current at their design

voltage. The maximum overali length of
Sealed Beam lamps is the distance from
front of the lens to the back of the terminals
and is a dimension guaranteed not to be exceeded bv the manufacturer.
RATED AVERAGE LIFE

APPROXIMATE INITIAL
MAXIMUM CANDLEPOWER
The value shown usually represents the intensity of light in the brightest portion of the
beam. With a filament of given wattage, the
maximum candlepower may vary widely, depending upon the amount the light is spread
by the lens configuration. Candlepower is the
generally accepted method of rating the lisht
output of Sealed Beam lamps.

The life expectancy of the lamp is rated in

hours of average life obtained in closely controlled laboratory tests at the design voltage
ratings. It is not necessarily the same as service life where adverse conditions may result
in a shorter average life.
LINE NUMBER
The line number is used to find specific lamps.
It has no ordering or technical significance.

Filaments for sealed beam lamps may be a coil or a coiled coil wire
(indicated by,the letters C arid CC"respectively). Coiling it e fiiament wire reduces gas losses and increases effiLiencv. Th"e number
the coil identification letter denotes the a'rrange;;;t;i
lgllo.ryi"g
the lrlament on the supports.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
The data and recommendations in this catalog, as weli as any additional information our representative may fur
nish, are for general information only. They should not be taken as representations or warranties as to the
suitability of any lamp for any particular application or use, or as to its performance under any particular condi,
tions of use. Possible applications and conditions of use are many, and beyond our control.
Since new information is constantly being uncovered through research and testing, it is not possible to know at
any given time all information with respect to a lamp or its performance. This is particularly true of newer lamps.
It is, therefore, up to the purchaser to make his own determination as to the suitability of a product for his intended use and to assume the responsibility for that determination.

When any equipment design is involved, please communicate with your General Electric Lamp Representative for

latest design information.

FARM TRACTOR LAMPS-

General Electric offers a complete line

of sealed beam lamps for use as original
equipment and replacements for practically all applications.
The various light patterns illustrated
below are suited to particular tractor

and implement combinations, whether the

implements are mounted beneath the tractor, trailed or mounted ahead.

The lens of each lamp is specifically delight for best advantage

siened to distribute
in the work area.

General Electric offers several dual purpose tractor lamps. These can be used as
flood lamps for trailed equipment in the
field, or can be switched to serve as red
tail lights when used on the highway.

FOR MOST EFFICIENT FIELD AND IMPLEMENT LIGHTING, TRAPEZOIDAL

AND FLOOD SEALED BEAMS ARE USUALLY USED IN COMBINATION.
