FLUORESCENT EMERGENCY LIGHTING

Now it is possible to make standard lighting instaltations do double duty as emergency lighting without the necessity of additional special purpose emergency lighting.

Most Benjamin fixtures using high power factor 4OW. RS ballasts can be supplied as emergency lighting fixtures either in individual or continuous row application and whether the units are for 1l2O or 272 volt circuits.
System Operation

The Benjamin emergency system operates a single lamp at a reduced output for over 90 minutes. This furnishes a belter overall illumination level than many remote mounted seal beam systems. This low level illumination helps to reduce the possibility of panic which can occur in enclosed areas when there is a power lailure. The basis of this system is a maintenance free, rechargeable, sealed battery system which serves as a power source for one lamp in a fixture designated lor the emergency lighting system. The sealed batteries are kept charged by a solid state charging system which recharges the batteries after use in lO to 15 hours. The switching from standard 110 lo 277 volt normal lighting situation to the emergency circuit is done automatically with solid state circuitry which eliminates the possibility ol a mechanical malfunction.

Eleclrical Circuiting To meet requirements, it is necessary that the battery charger circuit be permanently energized as an unswitched circuit. lt is also acceptable to supply the emergency lamps with a night lighting circuit (which is permanen y energized) which insures ihe continuous charging of the battery.
One of the primary advantages of the independent battery powered emergency system is that they furnish an overall low level ol lighting and function properly whether the power failure is general in nature or restricted to circuitry or individual section of the building.

It is recommended that when specifying Benjamin emergency lighting the system be laid out so that one emergency type fixture (using one 4OW. RS lamp) be used in not less than every 150 sq. ft. of floor space. Using this simple formula, adequate lighting is provided for occupants to move about safely and move lrom one area of emergency lighting to another without any signiticant decrease in ambient light levelTo Order To specity emergency lighting units on orders, indicate by Cat.
