! There you have it folks! Ulysses S. Alderado takes the race winning 173 to 100 over Omar Ikka. There were two absentee voters this election, bringing up U.S.A.s vote up by two, as well as altering a few of the other results. Ive also added who was for what issues just to see if the students and sta paid attention to the issues while making their choice for a candidate. ! It seems that abortion was denitely a key role in this race. Many students are pro-life, as is the winning candidate. SLHS also said that this was the main deciding factor for them during the race, with gay marriage coming in second as the most deciding factor. ! While Omar Ikka was the most heard candidate, it appears he was not the most understood. Ulysses campaign was credited with giving voters the most information about their campaign. In this race, informing the voters with a great amount of clarity is probably the most important thing to do since its done in such a short amount of time. According to the polls, Ulysses won the debate as well, telling us that this is most likely where they achieved this sense of clarity with the voters. Our projected poll, (page 4) taken before the debate also predicted Ulysses as winning the election. This means that students had an idea of what each candidate stood for, and that the debate simply reinforced those beliefs to a wider audience. ! One thing you should learn after coming out of this election is that the more informed voters are, the more accurately they will vote. Keep in mind this may not always be the case, however, it does happen during the o chance of a perfect storm, just as we saw occur here at SLHS. Congratulations Ulysses S. ! Were back! Yes, thats right, the Spirit Lake Indians are back in the UNI-Dome again! After a big win last Friday against number one ranked: Boyden-Hull Rock Valley, the Indians are advancing to the state semi-nal game played in Cedar Falls at the UNI-Dome. They will be facing the Knights of Carroll Kuemper Catholic. The two teams matched up last years in the quarternals with the Indians winning 31-7. The Indians are looking forward to having a great week of practice. The game will be on Saturday at 4:06pm in Cedar Falls, Ill see you there! By: Zach Arneson

WILL ASHLEYS CORNER S ! Every Monday night 13 students head to the police department in Spirit Lake. They are part of the Spirit Lake Police Youth Academy. Youth academy is an informational class for high school seniors interested in pursuing law enforcement or students that just want to learn more about what a police ocers job entitles. You may be surprised to learn that there are limitations on what police ocers may do in certain situations. ! Students are taught about a wide variety of topics. The topics they cover during this seven week course include: illegal drugs, trac enforcement, impaired drivers, rearms, tasers, the K-9 unit, undercover operations, SWAT teams, and communication. This year the students also had the opportunity to tour the jail! ! One weekend the students participated in a simulation, kind of like a video game, where they had to decide whether or not it was necessary to shoot a perpetrator. They werent given a lot of reaction time. Sometimes it was necessary to shoot, other times it is not. This gave the students insight into the tough decisions the ocers sometimes have to make. ! The ocers talked about undercover operation and SWAT team procedures, and then set up a scenario for the kids. Ocers pretended to be the bad guys and hid in a building. The students were given air-soft guns and told the situation. In one scenario, the students arrived at a school shooting, their goal was to nd the perpetrators and arrest them. If the students were shot at, they would re back. ! Youth Academy is a great way to learn more about law enforcement, and it is never boring. It is oered to seniors every year. If you are an underclassmen and this sounds like something youd be interested in, sign up! You will not regret it, you might even nd that you want to pursue a career in law enforcement! WAS THE DEBATE WORTHWHILE?

! Answers that were much needed during the debate on Monday, November 5th, nally came out. While students were sitting in the auditorium, we must ask ourselves, Were they actually taking in the candidates positions? As you took a gander around the SAMI Center, you saw many people on their cell phones or computers. This could be considered as good in the fact that they could be messaging their friends about which candidate they were going to vote for, but probably not. ! Was this debate worth having? Was it worth taking time out of the school day to put on for all high school students and sta? For the people that wanted to become educated voters it made all the dierence in the world. It was important to get all the main facts and sides of each candidates story cleared up. Students and sta will now be fully able to either agree or disagree with the candidates. ! The informative debate also gave the candidates parties a chance to tell everyone and give a nal statement on why they should be voted for and why they would be good representatives. ! Protesters at the debate caused a lot of fury but also a lot of thoughts. The thoughts were about really why we are focusing on the points we are. The questions in the debate come truly from the American people and what they want to know to be able to pick a side to be on. To us in America, the reections of Armistice Day (the original name for Veterans Day) will be lled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the countrys service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.... ! That quote was from November in the year 1919. The Treaty of Versailles had just been signed, and peace reigned. The men whose lives had been taken were remembered, and still are today. THE TIME HAS COME

! Its incredibly crazy to think that the real elections have come and gone so fast the last few months. It was interesting to see the whole process of everything and then be able to relate in a personal experience with our schools elections. We of course all know that Obama will continue to be our president for the next 4 years. It was surprising for some just because Romney for the longest time was ahead in popular votes which isnt always a guarantee, but has some aect. ! It was quite a close call in our own election today! There has been several articles about these two trying to persuade us to vote for them. Including tons of posters around, and people campaigning in both parties. You have to agree that they both have been doing such a wonderful job at bribing us all with candy! However, in the end Ulysses has taken the race for the 4th district. ! If you are in government class, we hope that this part of the year has brought much knowledge and hopefully you can go forth and use it towards deciding who to choose for in the next election, and to everyone else who has yet to take government, it is a wonderful opportunity to get to learn all of this in such detail. CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS VOTED UPON ! As we all know, 1 in 3 Americans voted for the next president and representatives for the next four years but that is not the story in its entirety. In states like Colorado and Maryland, there was also some other very important decisions to be made on the ballot. Voters faced decisions like the legalization of gay marriage and recreational use of marijuana. ! In Colorado and Washington voters agreed and voted for the state government involvement to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Thats right, it can be sold in government approved stores to customers of the age of 21 years or older. The question still stands however, with the broad fact being presented to the states, that marijuana is still illegal on the federal level. Federal government ocials remain reluctant to say specically what will happen, but other than that the federal policy has remained unchanged. ! Some supporters of the cause foresee a great level of inaction from the federal government by saying quote: I dont see D.E.A. agents sweeping into Colorado and Washington and enforcing drug laws that were previously enforced by local agencies... It would be extremely poor politics. The will of the people has been expressed. said Norm Stamper, a former Seattle police chief who spoke on behalf of the Washington measure. ! These measures enacted by the Colorado and Washington state governments will not be put into place for a while. However, due to the fact that they still need to be put into the books, and tax codes need to be written, voters can be able to expect the ability now to be able to home grow as many as six plants and possess an ounce of marijuana. They can also expect to be prohibited to light up in public, or, similar to alcohol restrictions, will not be able to drive under the inuence of the product. ! Voters in the states of Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington saw decisions on whether to approve or reject gay marriage in their own state, and each of them chose to legalize it or let it remain the same. The margin by which these measures occurred was narrow, but none the less the majority spoke and decided these state futures in some revolutionary decisions made this Tuesday by the American people.
