A beam xed at both ends is 2m long and is loaded with a vertical load P at the mid-span along his length. Its thin-walled cross-section is shown in Figure 1 which has a uniform thickness of 3mm. The shear modulus of the steel is 79GPa. a) If the twist of the member is must not exceed 5, what is the maximal permissible load P that can be applied. b) Determine the maximum shear stress due to the twist of the section. c) Indicate in Figure 1. where the maximum shear stress due to bending of the beam occurs.

A cantilever beam made of steel has a constant cross-section of uniform thickness as shown in Figure 2. The beam is loaded with a set of point loads acting through the centroid of the section and in planes parallel to the cross-section as indicated in Figure 2. a) Determine the principle axes of the cross-section using Mohrs circle. b) Determine the moment vector components along the principle directions. c) Determine the orientation of the neutral axis. d) Determine the maximum compressive and tensile stresses in the cross-section.

A piping system expansion loop consisting of a series of 90 bends is fabricated of pipe of constant size as shown in Figure 3. The symmetric expansion loop is subjected to a temperature difference T. The overall length of the loop is L and the thermal expansion of tubing material is . Determine for each end of the loop the restring bending moment M and force N induced by the temperature change. r= 0.5m R=1m a=0.5m
