Pre-Algebra Lesson 15 Objectives

1. Solving 2 step equations 2. Solving equations involving fractions and decimals

Materials and Handouts 1. Concentration cards copied onto thicker paper and cut up.

Homework

5-10 Go over homework minutes 1. Give them exercise 1 problems to play with as I go over homework 2. Make sure to go over homework extensively and make sure they understand each problem. CHECK especially that they were writing the equations and showing each step of the solutions process. 10 Instruction on solving two step equations. minutes 1. Go over the exercise 1 problems they were working on. Discuss how when extra weight was added on, we subtract it off. So if weight is already subtracted off, then we add it back on. Concentration game 2. Cut out the concentration cards and place the problem cards face down on one side, the answer cards face down on the other. MAKE SURE you cant see through the back of the cards. 3. Play concentration where we take turns flipping over a problem card, finding the value of x and then flipping over an answer card to see if they match. If they dont, you place them face down again in the same spot. Extending two step equation solving to negative numbers, fractions and decimals. 4. Discuss the fact that we can extend what we learned about balancing to negative numbers fractions and decimals. The rules all stay the same. 5. Go through the problems in exercise 2 slowly and carefully with them. Discuss the fact that we want to undo whats been done to the variable by doing the opposite operation. 6. For exercise 3- discuss the fact that they can think of a fraction as the numerator times the variable divided by the denominator. This makes solving equations with fractions A LOT easier because we multiply to undo the division, then divide to undo the multiplication. 7. Use exercise 4 as an exit slip- they need to do these four problems correctly on their own before they can leave while I fill out their paperwork.

Solving Equations with Fractions and Decimals Class Work

Exercise 1: Solve the following equations using balancing. a. d.

b.

e.

c.

Exercise 2: Extend our balancing techniques to the following problems involving negative numbers, fractions and decimals. a.

b.

d.

c.

Exercise 3: When theres a fraction in front of the variable, theres a nice trick you can do. A fraction means, numerator divided by denominator. This helps us when fractions are multiplying whole numbers. So for example: solve equations. a. . d. can mean, the fraction times 8 OR it could mean the number 3 times 8 divided by 4. It helps to think of fractions the second way when were trying to
