INTRODUCTION
Songket is a traditional Malaysian handwoven fabric. It is woven on two-pedal floorlooms by the Malay women in the north-eastern coast of the Malay Peninsula and inSarawak, East Malaysia. Traditionally, this songket fabric was woven in silk but today itis also woven in cotton and sometimes in a combination of both.
Songket, in other words, meansinlaid gold thread or an extra weft weaved, inwhich all warp threads are carefiillycounted and arranged intricately so that no overshotswill appear on the right side of the fabric. Songket fabric has been used by the Malays fordecoration and making costumes for ceremonial purposes for centuries. The history of Malay weaving was never written and has been forgotten throughthe centuries. This is the main problem of why we need a system in order to identify theprofile and data about the Songket. The silk weaving areas are mostly in the east coast ofthe Malay Peninsula especially in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. In the early daysweaving was one of the important things that people had to know since they had to makeclothes for themselves. In order to appreciate songket better, it will be beneficial to firstunderstand the existence and development of the art of Malay silk weaving in the eastcoast which is part of the Malay history.
