Its June 1st. Your budget director contacts you to say there is $40,000 available in end of year money that has to be spent or it will be returned to your central office. Your library operates on a fiscal year that ends June 30th. Your budget director needs for you to spend the money by Jun 7th. You have been thinking about creating a special purpose computer lab for your library. If you work in an academic library, it could be a multi media lab, a basic computer lab for library patrons or a classroom for your reference librarians to teach classes. If you work in a public library, it could be a youth computer lab or a genealogical research lab. You could also replace staff PCs if you think they need it. Be creative (iPads for patron check-out?). I need you to tell me what kind of library your pretend library will be and what you plan to do with the $40,000 (i.e. replace staff PCs, create a multi media lab, ). I also need you to give me the specs for the PCs or Macs that you decide to purchase. You need to consider printers and other peripherals (writeable DVD drives, size of hard drive, external storage device, etc). If your lab is for genealogical research, consider larger monitors. If its a multi media lab, consider dual monitors. Do research to find what other libraries are doing. Dont consider software. We will deal with software later. Include the cost for each item and the number of items. It should add up to about $40,000. Collaborative Computer Lab The library that I work for is a large academic library that serves a major research university. The library is used by students for research but what is in considerable demand is study space, particularly group study space. The campus curriculum has placed a strong emphasis on group work and many of the students that use the library are seeking space that is conducive to group learning. I propose to create a collaborative computer lab which will consist of a series of computer workstations that are designed to allow a group of up to five students to work together on a project using a single computer. Based upon the $40,000 budget that I have to work with the lab will consist of 14 separate workstations which will provide space for up to 70 individual students. The computer workstations will require a specialized configuration to achieve my goal. A large LCD monitor is essential and will provide all five students with a comfortable viewing angle. The computer lab will be serving the general purposes of the campus and therefore I will use Windows based computers rather than Macintosh computers. The lab will include two color printers.

I will be purchasing the equipment from Dell because they are on state contract and all of our current Windows based computers come from Dell. Upon searching Dells website I realized that the largest monitor available is 23 inches but this not large enough for my purpose therefore I will order an LCD television for each work station instead. The televisions have the appropriate screen size, a resolution identical to a computer monitor and the necessary inputs to work with a computer.
