Introduction Version Information NIC Software Upgrade Online Help Document Number: CO 003482F This document was upgraded for the 6.3 Feature Set release.

Performing Tasks
Connecting to the NIC Device To start the upgrade process you must first verify that you have an active Ethernet connection to the NIC's IP Address. The software upgrade utility utilizes Network TCP Port numbers 21 and 8081. If a firewall is in place, then you must allow the software upgrade utility to access these ports. Establish an Ethernet connection to the NIC test unit: 1. Turn the NIC test unit On, and wait for the GUI to load. 2. From the System tab, select I/O Settings, select Ethernet. 3. Verify the NIC's IP Address. If the NIC is currently configured to Obtain an IP address from a DCHP server, then the NIC must have been connected to a DHCP router or DHCP server on boot up in order to obtain a valid IP address. If the NIC is not connected to a DHCP router or DHCP server, then you must select Specify a IP Address, then enter a valid IP address and Subnet Mask address. If connecting directly to the NIC from a PC or Laptop, and if the NIC contains the legacy Windows NT System Controller module (which was phased out in 2006), then a cross-over Ethernet cable must be used. 4. To verify that your PC or Laptop is able to connect to the NIC, open a command prompt window and Ping the NIC's IP Address. To do this click Start > Run and then typing "CMD" and press Enter. The from the prompt type "Ping <ipaddress>", where <ipaddress> is the NIC's IP Address, and press Enter. If you receive valid replies from the NIC, then everything is setup successfully. 5. Once you have verified Ethernet connectivity to the device, then proceed to the Upgrading the NIC Software.

NIC Software Upgrade Upgrading the NIC Software The instructions outlined below provide steps for upgrading your NIC unit. For information about specific menu and dialog box options, see the topics listed under Screens and Descriptions. You must have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 Update 18 (or later) installed on your PC before proceeding with the upgrade. 1. If the software upgrade utility was downloaded from the Internet, and after launching the upgrade utility skip to step 4. 2. If installing from CD-ROM, then insert the Software and Remote CD which should have been received with your NIC, unit into your computer's CD-ROM drive. The CD should automatically open the Remote NIC Software window. If not, then double click on DliInstall.exe from the CDROM's directory. 3. From the Software tab, select Upgrade NIC Software, then select Install. 4. A DOS prompt window displays in the background and then the Digital Lightwave's Software Upgrade utility appears. No action is required for the DOS prompt window. 5. From the Software Upgrade utility, select Device Logon. The Device Logon dialog box appears. 6. Enter the NIC unit's IP Address in the field labelled Enter IP Address. You can find the IP Address on the NIC unit's I/O screen. 7. Select OK. If you are downgrading to an older Feature Set, or reloading the same Feature Set, then refer to Downgrading or Reloading Individual Circuit Packs. 8. If you are upgrading to a newer Feature Set, then the software upgrade utility connects to the NIC unit, and then the Scheduled Upgrades Notice dialog box appears informing you that the "Scheduled Upgrades" table now contains all the latest downloaded for the new Feature Set. 9. Select OK. The notice box closes and you are returned to the Software Upgrade utility. 10. Select Upgrade. NIC Software Upgrade Downgrading or Reloading Individual Circuit Packs This procedure should be used when you need to downgrade a NIC unit to an older Feature Set release, or if you need to reload the same Feature Set release that is currently on the NIC unit. If upgrading a NIC unit to a newer Feature Set then refer to Upgrading the NIC Software. To downgrade or reload the same Feature Set as is currently on the NIC: 1. Follow Steps 1 through 7 of the standard upgrade instructions. 2. From the Software Upgrade utility, expand Device(s) in the device box, then expand Device 1. 3. Select on the SC Board icon. 4. Select the Software Version Set number listed in the Available Upgrades table, and click the Add> button. If the Add> button is not enabled, then double-click on the Version Set number. 5. The software on all of the circuit boards listed in the Scheduled Upgrades table will be downgraded or reloaded when the Upgrade button is selected. 8. The Upgrade Activity Status dialog box appears as the software files are transferred and installed onto the NIC unit. This automatically upgrades all circuit packs on the NIC unit. The upgrade process may take several minutes. If you receive the message "Upgrade was Cancelled" during the upgrade process, refer to Troubleshooting. 9. The Upgrade Alert! dialog box appears when the downgrade/reload is completed, informing you to restart the NIC unit. Select OK.

Performing Tasks 10. NIC units made as of 2006 have the ability to perform a software reboot. To perform a software reboot, click the Reboot button to the right of the Upgrade button. If the Reboot button is not displayed, then expand Device(s) in the device box, then expand Device 1, then click on the SC Board icon. This should force the Reboot button to appear if it did not automatically appear, and if the NIC unit is newer than 2006. 11. Otherwise, toggle the NIC unit's On/Off switch to Off and back to On. 12. Leave the NIC unit off for a minimum of 10 seconds before turning it back on. 13. This completes the software upgrade.

NIC Software Upgrade Installing Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE) In order for software upgrade to run, you must have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 Update 18 (or later) installed on your PC.
