Time & Eternity

Eternity and time differ as the sea and rivers; the sea never changes place, and is always one water; but the rivers glide along, and are swallowed up in the sea; so is time by eternity (Stephen Charnock) Behold, God is great, and we do not know Him; Nor can the number of His years be discovered. Job 36:26

2 Peter 3:8
But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day

I Am Who I Am
And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And He said, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. Exodus 3:14
God is self-existent. We are dependent upon the external conditions to sustain our existence.

What Does This Mean?

There are no deficiencies with God.
God does not have need to mature, further in knowledge, increase in power or strength, & neither is He diminishing.

The present tense is used by God, I Am Who I Am, not I was or I will be.

I Am Who I Am
Of a creature, it may be said he was, or he is, or he shall be; of God it cannot be said but only He is. He is what He always was, and He is what He always will be. (Charnock) Our Creator, God did not come by chance or just develop.

Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

What Does This Mean?

God has not become mellow throughout the ages.
God has NOT reformed over time and He has NOT become much more tolerant today.

For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? Hebrews 2:2,3

What Does This Mean?

God has not become mellow throughout the ages.

God is expecting even a greater gravity, significance of For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and purpose in aserving Him! shall disobedience received just recompense, how we escape if we neglect so Rom. 5:8) (John 3:16; great a salvation?
God has NOT reformed over time and He has NOT become much more tolerant today.

Hebrews 2:2,3

Acts 17:25
Nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things

What Does This Mean?

God is everlasting therefore meaning that God is self-sustaining.
God does not depend on anything nor anyone for His existence, however we are entirely dependent on Him.

For in Him we live and move and exist Acts 17:28

John 5:26
For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,

John 5:26
The Father has life in Himself; therefore it only makes sense that He Himself can give life to others. God has infinite life, not a meager droplet of it, but an incessant stream. God is constant; constantly vigorous, always flourishing, always astonishing!

What Does This Mean?

Because God is eternal, His decrees must be eternal, for He could never have existed without thinking or willing them. He can accomplish His decrees because He is almighty, but He could not be almighty without being eternal (Zondervan Pictorial Ency. p. 384).
According to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations (Romans 16:26).

John 12:48
He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges himthe word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

John 12:48
The eternity of God is the foundation He who rejects Me, and does of the stability of the covenant, the not receive of a Christian. If He had a My words, has that great comfort which judges himthe word beginning, He might have an end, and so all our happiness, hope, and being that I have spoken will judge would expire with Him (Charnock) him in the last day.

Our Everlasting God

What would the thoughts of heaven, everlasting life, eternal life mean to us if God Himself were not eternal and everlasting?
NOTHING!

If God was not everlasting/eternal, then at some time in the past He would not have been there, or there would be a time in the future when the power of God would fail or end.

Our Everlasting God

For God to be all-knowing and wise, He must be eternal!
Consider that if God had a beginning, then He would be unknowing of all those things that happened prior to His existence, and if He has an end, then He can only see so far into the future. The prophets have come & gone as well with the apostles, but where is the church?

Matthew 16:18
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Daniel 7:9
I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire;

Ancient of Days
Some seem to have a misconception regarding the term ancient by somehow thinking that God is old in the sense that He has aged and grown weary. Although God is eternal, He has NOT grown old or weary.

Isaiah 40:28
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.

Ancient of Days
God never tires or grows weary of:
His desire for mans salvation (2 Peter 3:9) Of His holiness, justice, & mercy. Remaining, to this the very moment, eager to hear our prayers (1 Peter 5:7).

Is our inward man growing day by day as the outward man perishes? Gal. 6 says for us to not grow weary while doing good.
Have we grown weary?

Paul said to those in Corinth to be steadfast, always abounding in the work of the Lord.
Are we?
