2. Missed Test Policy When a student misses a test for any reason, they will take the make-up test their first day back to school in after school detention. The teacher should provide the appropriate Assistant Principal with the test and instructions on how long the student has to complete it. The Assistant Principal will ensure that the teacher on detention duty for that day administers the test. 3. Hall Passes Teachers are expected to write in the handbook each time a student leaves the classroom. Students are only permitted to leave the classroom with a signed handbook. Teachers should regularly ask students in the hallway for their signed handbooks. If a student is on a free period, the teacher should follow-up with the students schedule to ensure the consistency of this procedure. 4. Out of Uniform
Course Title: IB Preparation Chemistry Instructor: Jean Claude Mangan jcmangan@aisa.sch.ae First period teachers are responsible for making sure students are in proper uniform attire.
Students that are out of uniform should be sent to the appropriate Assistant Principal so the student can purchase a uniform or call home and have a uniform sent to school.
Extra Help: I am willing to give you extra help. I will be available most days before school, at recess, at lunch, or after school. Please set up a time with me. Laboratory responsibilities 1. Be aware of the reagents (chemicals) you are using and use them ONLY in an approved experiment. 2. Use proper technique with lab materials. 3. Dispose of reagents in the proper ethical manner. 4. Clean your lab bench thoroughly before leaving the classroom. 5. Wash your hands after experiments. 6. Prevent ingestion of reagents by refraining from eating or drinking during lab experiment time. 7. Ensure the safety of yourself and others in the lab. General classroom responsibilities 1. Treat class members with respect in both words and actions. 2. Use appropriate language in the classroom. 3. Return all borrowed items to their place. 4. Ask permission to leave the room. 5. Wait until dismissed to leave class ACADEMIC HONESTY Student Handbook 2011-2012: Coursework submitted by a student must be the students own, original work. Students shall not cheat on any assignment by giving or receiving unauthorized assistance, or commit the act of plagiarism. Students who commit such acts are subject to receiving a grade of zero (0) on the assignment in question as well as disciplinary action. HOMEWORK You will have homework every day and on weekends. Some assignments will be turned in paper form and others will be submitted online through turnitin.com website. Do not lose your login and password. Always show your work, circle final answers with correct significant figures and units, and include enough labeled information from the question so the answer is not ambiguous and the solution process can be followed by anyone. Always remember to differentiate between the given information, what you have to know or look up, and your solution process (what you have to calculate). SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS: UNIT TESTS: 1. There is a unit test at the end of each unit. To receive full credit on the open-ended questions, all work must be shown. No credit will be given for numerical answers without work; Up to 5 points can be deducted for lack of units and significant figures. 2. Study and prepare well for each test. Ask for help when you need it and come to tutoring after school. Get a study partner from class and make sure that you are both dedicated and have a common goal to excel in the class. Be an independent learner by reading extra material and working on extra problems to sharpen your skills. Stay on top of your work and complete all assignments. Read or browse your notes daily even if it is not an assigned task. LAB REPORTS 1. Chemistry is a laboratory course. You will have 4 labs per quarter. You will know during lab whether you have to turn in a FORMAL (assessment grade) or INFORMAL (practice grade) lab report. 2. To make up a lab, the absence needs to be an excused absence. Then, it needs to be made up the next class following the missed lab day.
3. Late lab reports will be subject to points deduction. Informal lab reports will be given ZERO. Formal lab reports only have a 2 day window to be late: 1 day late = -10 points, and 2 days late = -20 points and 3 days or more late = 0.
