Whatever part of the world its people come from, together they embody a unique corporate culture: excellent training and further education, uncompromising customer orientation, a strong sense of responsibility and the courage to make quick decisions. These are characteristics that make Kuehne + Nagel a global player and technological leader in logistics today and in the future.

CHALLENGES IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY. AND KUEHNE + NAGEL'S PERSPECTIVE.

The automotive industry has always been at the forefront of innovative logistics solutions. No other industry has made such consistent efforts to reduce costs and outsource non-core activities such as production, assembly and logistics services. The relocation of production to countries with low wage costs is a move which has motivated subcontractors to expand their operations in these countries. However, existing capacity can not be reduced nearly as fast as new production capacity is created at these new locations. The result: growing pressure on unit costs. A central aim of automotive logistics is, therefore, to continuously identify and take advantage of potential opportunities for cost reductions. Outsourcing is one of the most efficient ways of achieving this. The growing complexity of the industry presents another exciting challenge. Despite mass production, the products are becoming ever more individual; a form of microsegmentation that is due to the explosive development of electronics and its steadily growing importance in the industry. In addition, the wide geographical spread of the automotive production networks in comparison with other industries brings new demands. Whereas in other industries only sourcing takes place on a global scale, in the automotive industry production and maintenance are also spread all over the world. The function of logistics in this industry is to create a geographical balance across the globe. Therefore, a continuing challenge into the future will be the ability of logistics providers to address the relocation of production capacity and the shifting of complete factories to balance global demands. Automotive logistics will be just as dynamic in future and Kuehne +Nagel is ready.

THREE KEY SUCCESS FACTORS. THE UNIQUE KUEHNE + NAGEL SERVICE

Dependability, flexibility and worldwide availability of capacity: With its high quality standard and global network, Kuehne + Nagel is ideally placed to meet these three key demands of the automotive industry. Kuehne + Nagel solutions accompany the automobile through the whole of its life cycle, generating true added value for all concerned: for suppliers through inbound logistics, for OEM's through production logistics and for OEM's and after market suppliers through outbound logistics and after-sales service. The service modules which have been specially developed for the automotive industry are based on three key success factors: a global logistics network, cutting edge technology and highly qualified staff. The global network with high availability and adaptable to the needs of the individual customer is the backbone of all services. The use of state-of-the-art information technology ensures complete visibility within the network, right down to part level (Kuehne + Nagel Material Management System). And a carefully conceived training plan with systematic staff development programs ensures that there are excellently trained staff at every Kuehne + Nagel office. To ensure that its staff understand the customer's business, Kuehne +Nagel specifically recruits candidates with a background in the automotive industry, or places members of staff on secondments to automotive firms for on-the-job training. To ensure solutions success, Kuehne +Nagel has developed a customer transition integration model that combines these three critical success factors. Early in the preliminary phase of a project the right questions are asked, milestones are defined, controlling instruments are activated and IT connections prepared. According to the philosophy of Act like an owner, this focused project management ensures short implementation times for the customer.
