DR. KEN KARR
Dr. Ken Karr has been a major driving force behind East Carolina's rise to national prominence in intercollegiate athletics. Since being named July 11, 1980 as only the fourth athletic director to serve ECU 'since the inception of the position on the Greenville campus in 1947, Karr has guided the program toward greater exposure and success. He has been instrumental in upgrading the Pirate football schedule to where there are now home-and-away series with powers such as Florida State, Miami (FL) and Temple, as well as facing Pittsburgh, Missouri, Florida, West Virginia and Illinois. Karr also played a major role in East Carolina's admission into the Eastern College Athlete Conference (ECAC), which offers an automatic bid to the NCAA championship tournament to the winner ofthe conference tournament He was named treasurer of the ECAC-South in 1983. Karr came to ECU from San Diego State, where he served as athletic director from 1969-1979 and as chairman of the Department of Athletics in 1980. While developing an excellent San Diego State athletic program, Karr also was very active on the national scene with the NCAA In 1975, he was elected to the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee for a three-year period. His appointment to that committee was renewed for another three years to run through 1982. This is the committee which determines the schools to fill all slots in the NCAA post-season basketball tournament The Holiday Bowl, a post-season football game held in San Diego, was begun in 1978, with Karr playing an instrumental role in getting the game sanctioned by the NCAA. Karr served on the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Holiday Bowl in 1978 and 1979. Prior to his tenure at San Diego, Karr served as an assistant director at the University of Arizona. In 1964-67, he was an assistant football coach at Wake Forest and from 1 952-54, he served at three high schools and two colleges on the football staff, Karr holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from Illinois State University and a master's and doctoral degree in physical education and philosophy, respectively, from the University of Illinois. Karr is married-wife's name Priscilla-and has two children.

Bob Helmick begins the 1983 season with the newly created position of Associate Athletic Director for East Carolina. Helmick is no stranger to the ECU athletic scene, however, as he Is entering his 11 th year with the Pirates. In addition to working closely with ECU athletic director, Dr. Ken Karr, Helmick will oversee all operational activities on campus. He will be in charg of events staging, transportation, facilities, field maintenance and summor camps. Helmick, 54, joined the Pirate staff after 23 years of service in the military. The Charleston, WV native, retired with the rank of sergeant major in 1970. He spend a total of 13 years of overseas service and also coached and played for 13 years with military teams worldwide.

Dave Hart, Jr.


ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR MARKETING Dave Hart begins his first season at East Carolina in the newly created position of assistant athletic director for marketing. Hart, 34, is responsible for the areas of promotions, ticket sales and advertising, while increasing revenue capabilities for football, basketball and baseball. The Connellsville, PA. native comes to ECU from LaGrange, KY, where he served as head basketball coach at Oldham High School. During his tenure at Oldham, Hart became heavily involded in high school sports marketing that received national recognition. Hart attended the University of Alabama on a basketball grant-in-aid and played under Crimson Tide coach C.M. Newton. After graduating with a B.A. in speech and English in 1971, he worked as a graduate assistant in the program while earning his master's degree in 1972. He is married to the former Pam Humble and they have three children, Ricky, Jamie Michelle, and Kelly Ann.

Pam Holt
ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR STUDENT LIFE Pam Holt begins her third season with the East Carolina athletic department. Holt, 36, is in charge of housing, non-revenue athletic schedules, awards, the ECU Student Athletic Board, staging activities for football and women's basketball, and academic and strength conditioning supervisor. The Bloomfield, lA, native is a 1969 graduate of Northeast Missouri State University with a B.S. in education. She joined the ECU staff in 1981.
