[3] GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES ==================================== A. B. C. D. E. GAME INSTALLATION AND STARTUP GAME PERFORMANCE SOUND ISSUES MOUSE ISSUES TECHNICAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A. GAME INSTALLATION AND STARTUP Some Kenwood CD drives experience problems starting Zeus/Poseidon. The drive sp ins and stops; Zeus/Poseidon fails to start. Kenwood has firmware updates to fix this problem. Visit http://www.KenwoodTech.com for more information. If you have a different brand of CD-ROM that is experiencing a problem starting Zeus/Poseidon, be sure to check the manufacturer's website for the latest softwa re drivers and firmware updates. In Windows 2000, the following message appears when Zeus/Poseidon is started: "T here is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." Zeus/Poseidon needs local administrator access to run under Windows 2000. Log in with adminis trator rights and start Zeus/Poseidon. B. GAME PERFORMANCE For better game performance, we highly recommend exiting all non-essential backg

round programs before running Zeus/Poseidon. Zeus/Poseidon will also run better if your system has current hardware drivers and a recently defragmented hard dri ve. To play Zeus/Poseidon in Windowed mode, game performance is improved if your des ktop resolution is set to High Color (16 bit.) Systems using monitoring programs (such as McAfee First Aid, Norton Crash Guard, Oil Change, Guard Dog and The Help Spot) may experience problems running Zeus/P oseidon. To solve the problem, disable or, if necessary, uninstall the conflicti ng application. C. SOUND ISSUES Zeus/Poseidon may not run correctly on some computers using SoundBlaster PCI64, PCI128, SBLive!, Ensoniq, or Yamaha sound cards. This may include sound problem s and intermittent crashes. You must have the latest sound card drivers. Visit your sound card manufacturer's web site for more information: http://www.CreativeLabs.com (for SoundBlaster sound cards) http://www.Ensoniq.com http://www.Yamaha.com On lower end systems (near the minimum system specification) turning off 3D-soun ds and turning off music can increase game performance (Menu bar -> Options -> S ound Options.) If you experience sound stuttering or skipping, mostly when a god is appearing o r speaking, try the following to minimize the problem: Make sure you have up-todate drivers, and that you exit out of all programs before starting Zeus/Poseido n. If the problem persists, go to your root Zeus directory, and open Zeus.ini in a text editor. Add the following after the 'CPU=' line: "SoundFrags=48". This n umber may be increased up to 96 in order to improve sound performance. We sugges t increasing it in increments of 16. Also, for sound stuttering/skipping problems, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Multimedia and make sure that your sound card is set as your Preferred Playback Device. D. MOUSE ISSUES Using animated mouse cursors can create cursor anomalies in Zeus/Poseidon. If yo u encounter problems, restore your Windows mouse cursor to its default settings. Recent Logitech wheel mouse drivers may prevent use of the mouse wheel. Logitech has a registry file available for download that allows gamers to use a Logitech wheel/roller mouse. Visit http://www.logitech.com/cf/support/mousefiles_pc.cfm for more information. If you own a Diamond Viper video card and you experience problems with the game view scrolling uncharacteristically when your mouse cursor reaches a certain par t of the screen, go to the Windows Start menu: Start -> Settings -> Control Pane l -> System and select the performance tab. Click on Graphics and reduce your g raphics acceleration to alleviate the problem. E. TECHNICAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (TECH FAQ) For further info on troubleshooting and game optimization, read our TECH FAQ at http://zeus.impressionsgames.com/oracle-techfaq.shtml

[4] GENERAL GAME ISSUES ==================================== Additional Hotkeys (see Appendix 2 of the Zeus manual): [ decrease game speed by 10% ] increase game speed by 10% Ctrl + (1-5) While a company is selected, set a hot key for the company. Alt + (1-5) Select a company that was previously set using Ctrl - (1-5) When placing a Sanctuary, Gatehouse, Horse Ranch, the Palace, or Pyramid, the 'r ' key can be used to manually rotate the structure. When placing a Hippodrome se ction or Water Park, the 'r' key can be used to manually cycle through the allow ed sections. On Storage building info panels, you can set ALL items to "don't accept" by clic king on the small 'X' button. Each item can still be adjusted individually afte r this. If you have multiple military companies selected, holding SHIFT down and clickin g on a company's standard, or its name on the control panel, will deselect that company. You can add companies to your selection by holding down SHIFT and click ing on additional company standards. Zeus/Poseidon supports the use of a wheel mouse. The mouse wheel can be used to scroll text or to navigate between the control panel tabs. On rare occasions you may find soldiers standing around the Palace, while their standard is on the Palace. The soldiers won't go anywhere, and may appear to be stuck. To send the soldiers home, left click on the soldiers to select them, lef t click on clear ground to place the standard, muster the company, and then send the company home. The company will now behave normally. Sanctuaries, Pyramids, and the Palace can be destroyed by natural disasters. On ce destroyed, Sanctuaries, Pyramids, and the Palace can be rebuilt. Upgrading roads (with avenues or boulevards) while paused, then saving the game, can cause the roads to become corrupted when the save is loaded. The corruptio n can be removed by using the clear tool to clear the affected area. To avoid t his problem, do not save the game while paused immediately after upgrading roads while paused. "DATA LIMIT REACHED" There are limits to how many buildings, walkers and walker routes Zeus/Poseidon can handle. Though these limits are quite high, you might reach them if you bui ld a city of 25,000 or more people. If you do see this message, your only recou rse is to resculpt your city for greater efficiency. Even higher populations ar e possible if you build very efficiently. Using the editor for extended periods of time may produce the same error message when trying to place terrain in a city map. To eliminate this, save the Advent ure then quit and restart the game.

[5] HINTS AND TIPS ==================================== Suck up to your neighbors

Give other leaders gifts of goods or money now and then, especially if you have an excess of goods that you can afford to part with. Goods they need or buy will have the most effect. Pay attention to other leaders' requests and fulfill them when you can. It always pays to have a few favors you can pull in when you're in a jam. Butter up your Rivals If you are very nice to your rivals, even they may be willing to provide you wit h goods when you are in need of them. See into the future The Oracle of Apollo and Zeus' Stronghold contain Oracles that can predict the f uture. Pray to the Gods Don't forget to pray to the gods at their Sanctuaries when you need help. Gods will do anything from filling your Storehouses with goods, to joining you on a m ilitary campaign or improving city hygiene. Listen to your people Citizens of your city will tell you what they think about living in the city. R ight click on them to hear what they have to say. Lay out roads carefully The fewer intersections walkers encounter, the more efficient they will be. Try to plan your neighborhoods so that YOU are deciding where the walkers go and no t leaving the decision up to them. Roadblocks are very useful for this purpose. Decrease Walker Travel Distance The closer a workshop is to its source of raw materials, the higher its annual p roduction will be. Try to minimize the distance that workers such as Herders, G rowers, and Miners have to travel. Also, try to keep Artisan guilds and Storeho uses with Sanctuary or Pyramid materials close to your construction sites to hel p reduce construction time. Watch your employment numbers Click the Industry tab and monitor the number of vacant jobs or unemployed peopl e there are in your city, and make sure you don't have too many of either. A li ttle bit of unemployment is better than a worker shortage, especially in a small city. Don't build new services if you are already short of workers. Use foresight in city planning Keep in mind that usable land is often limited. When constructing new buildings , take care to leave appropriate space for structures you may need to build in t he future. Some o' them Sanctuaries is huge! Don't forget you can use the 'r' key to rotate sanctuary and pyramid 'footprints' when you place them. Pace yourself Take the time now and then to gauge your situation. In some situations you'll h ave to build fast and furious to meet goals, requests, or demands. In other ins tances you won't be able to do everything at once - you'll have to bide your ti me until the right opportunity presents itself (a new city begins trading with y ou, a resource or new building becomes available, you receive a gift, you're iss ued a quest, etc.). Using Culture and Science venues The Stadium, Theater, and Podium all act as 'magnets' for their respective walke rs coming from training facilities. Competitors, actors and philosophers from t he Gymnasium, Drama School, and College, respectively, will head straight for th ese venues, ignoring roadblocks on their way. Similarly, Observatories and the

Museum will attract walkers from Universities, while Laboratories draw walkers f rom Inventor's Workshops. Keep this in mind as you are planning culture or scie nce for your city. Watch your money If you find yourself in financial trouble, decrease imports or increase exports, reduce wages or increase taxes. But remember these are only temporary fixes. Asking other cities for help is also a great immediate solution to financial pro blems, but it has a negative impact on their favor. Though Elite housing does n ot contribute to the labor pool, it will contribute greatly to the taxes collect ed. Take advantage of it! Export, export, export Harvest local raw materials or buy them if necessary. Refine them into finished goods and sell them at a profit. This is your best way to make money. Shift labor Labor shortages are often unavoidable. In these cases you might want to tempora rily shift labor away from less-essential sectors of the workforce to concentrat e on your city's immediate needs. Raising wages will draw more workers from you r existing population, but don't do this for too long, or you could wind up brok e. Send your Warship Workers Home Trireme or Frigate Wharves require 100 employees to operate. If you are experie ncing a labor shortage, and your city is not currently under attack, make sure t hat your warships are not being manned. Protect your Palace Always protect your Palace. If an enemy army destroys your Palace, your city wi ll be conquered, and you will be forced to pay tribute to the conqueror. Moving Your Entire Military To move multiple standards at once, click on one (which will bring up the compan y orders interface on the Control Panel), then drag a box around all of the stan dards that you want to select. Scroll to the desired location, and click to pla ce all of the standards. This multiple selection method can also be used to iss ue commands to several companies at once. Leave Standards in the field Leave company standards at the site of battle after you send your troops home. Often enemies will approach from the same direction. You can save time musterin g your troops if you already have their standards at a spot where the enemy is l ikely to attack. Working with Earthquake Cracks Short bridges can be built over straight sections of earthquake-cracked land.

[6] MISCELLANEOUS POSEIDON ENHANCEMENTS ==================================== - Take advantage of Poseidon's powerful editor to create full, rich Adventures o f your own!
