EARLY LIFE
Birth:August29,1905 in Allahabad Uttar
Pradesh.

Family: Father Sameshwar Dutt Singh was in


Indian Army & two brothers Mool & Roop Singh.

Education:He studied till class sixth. He was


a active member of leading hockey club Heroes Jhansi

CAREER
1922:Joined Indian Army at the
age of 16

1922-1926:Hockey confined to
Army tournaments 1926:Dhyan Chand made his international debut with Indias successful tour to New Zealand 1928:India won its first Olympic Hockey Gold Medal on its debut at the Amsterdam Olympics,Chand scored 14 goals in 5 matches

CAREER
1932:India regains the gold medal
at the Los Angeles Olympics, beating USA 24-1 in the final, a world record. Dhyan Chand scores 133 goals out of India's 338 on this world tour.

1934: Appointed captain of India for


the Western Asiatic Games . 1935:Tours New Zealand and Australia. Dhyan Chand scores 201 goals out of India's 584. Brother Roop Singh scores 185 goals.

CAREER
1936:Appointed captain for the
1936 Berlin Olympics. India defeated Germany by 8-1 in final . Chand scored 6 goals in that match. Dhyan Chand scores 59 goals out of India's 175 on the world tour. 1947-48:Appointed captain for the tour of East Africa. Dhyan Chand scores 61 goals in 22 matches, at the age of 43! 1949:After a hockey career that lasted 30 years, Dhyan Chand retires from hockey.

MIDDLE & LATER LIFE


Dhyan Chand got married to Janaki Devi & had seven sons. At the age of 51 he retired from the Indian Army with the rank of Major After retirement he taught at coaching camps in Jhansi Dhyan Chand died on December 3,1979 at the AIIMS.

1951:Chand honored at the National stadium with Dhyan Chand tournament 1956:Dhyan Chand received Padma Bhushan award Indian Government released a postage stamp in his honor on his death anniversary After 1936 Olympics a German newspaper put a banner all over the Berlin: 'Visit the hockey stadium to watch the Indian magician Dhyan Chand in action

HONOR
His birthday(29 August) is celebrated as National sports day in India. In the name of Dhyan Chand sports ministry of India introduced a Lifetime Achievement Award in sports in 2002 A statue was built with four hands & four sticks in his memory in Vienna After his death Dhyan Chand National Stadium" in New Delhi named in his honor He won the gold medals three times in the 1928, 1932 and the 1936 Olympic Games

Adolf Hitler offered him German citizenship & Colonel post in army. Tokyo official once broke his hockey to check for a magnet. Once in a match he argued with the referee about the measurement of goal & amazingly the width of the goal was not correct.
