MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS

HOMEWORK
PROBLEM 1
Derive the differential equation governing the motion of the system of Figure 1. The bar is attached, from the left side, to a cart of mass m1 which is attached to a spring and viscous damper. The bar is also attached, from the right side, to another cart of mass m2 which is attached to a spring and a damper. The system is in equilibrium when the bar is in the vertical position. The free vibrations start after a displacement x2 (as shown in Figure 1) of the mass m2. By using x2 (see Fig. 1, x2 is the displacement of the cart of mass m2) as the generalized coordinate, apply the equivalent systems method (energy method) to derive the differential equation of free vibrations of the system. Notes: - Assume small ( is the angular displacement of the bar). - Do not neglect the effect of the gravitational force developed by the weight of the bar. To simplify the problem, the following steps may be followed: 1. The linear displacement of the cart m1 is denoted by x1 and the angular displacement of the bar is denoted by . Express x1 and in terms of x2. 2. Determine the total kinetic energy of the system as well as the equivalent mass of the system. 3. Determine the total potential energy of the system as well as the equivalent stiffness of the system 4. Determine the work done by the frictional forces present in the system as well as the equivalent damping coefficient of the system. 5. Finally, write the differential equation governing the motion of the system.

PROBLEM 2
A mass of 5 kg is dropped onto the end of a cantilever beam with a velocity of 0.5 m/s, as shown in Figure 1. The impact causes vibrations of the mass, which sticks to the beam. The beam is made of steel (E = 210 x 109 N/m2), is 2.1 m long, and has a moment of inertia I = 3 x106 m4. Neglect inertia of the beam and determine the response of the mass.

PROBLEM 3
The differential equation governing free vibrations of an accelerometer is

4.6 x 1012 4.93 x 107 x 0.380 x 0 x

1. Determine the response of the accelerometer if it has an initial displacement of 0m and an initial velocity of 30m/s. 2. What is the value of the displacement at t = 1s?
