1. WHOLE NUMBERS. Whole Numbers are all natural numbers, zero and natural numbers with a negative sign. The symbol for them is . = {.. . .. , 3, 2, 1,0 ,1 ,2,3 , .. .. . } OPERATIONS: A. ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION: We are going to follow these next steps: 1. Remove the brackets. 2. Add the positive numbers together and the negative numbers together. 3. Subtract the absolute values and then use the sign of the biggest number. Example: 4 3 4 5 = 4 3 4 5= 8 8= 0 B. MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION: How do we multiply whole numbers? 1. Multiply the sign. We can use the rules of sign: = = = = 2. Multiply the numbers without sign. How do we divide whole numbers? 1. Divide the sign. We can use the rules of sign: : = : = : = : = 2. C. ARITHMETIC EXPRESSIONS: For arithmetic expressions with whole numbers that use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, we use the following order of operations: 1) Brackets and squared brackets. 2) Multiplication and division. 3) Addition and subtraction.

For example: 2 3 [ 5 2 1 ]= 2 3 [ 3 1 ]= 2 3 3 1 = 2 3 4 = = 2 12= 2 12= 10

2. FRACTIONS. A fraction is an expression, such as:

Where a : the top (numerator), and b : the bottom (denominator) The meaning of the fraction is: a is divided by b If I have b , I select a OPERATIONS: A. ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION: 1) When the numbers on the bottom are the same, we add the top and we maintain the same number on the bottom. 2) When the numbers on the bottom are not the same: we use equivalent fractions to create the same denominator in all fractions. The new denominator must be the Lowest Common Multiple of all denominators. For example:

B. MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS Remember that to multiply fractions we multiply the top numbers together and the bottom numbers together. For example:

C. DIVIDING FRACTIONS. Remember that to divide two fractions we must multiply the top of the first fraction by the bottom of the second fraction (the numerator of the answer) and multiply the bottom of the first fraction by the top of the second fraction (the denominator of the answer) For example:

We must also simplify the answer.

D. ARITHMETIC EXPRESSION WITH FRACTIONS. The order of operations is the same as with whole numbers: 1) Brackets and squared brackets. 2)Multiplication and division. 3)Addition and subtraction.
