Metal roofing over shingles How to install metal roofing over an existing asphalt shingle roof.

Conditions vary on each job and the number one focus is always SAFETY FIRST. Yeah, it is an old adage, and it is old because it has helped millions of people. Always use ropes and adequate supports on any job that is over a 6/12 pitch. Specifications ( like these ) should be used to solicit bids from contractors in your area. If this is a DIY metal roofing installation, then you should solicit help from experienced roofers and not recruite your beer drinking buddies, OK ? Preparations for the metal roofing installation: EXACT measurements for the roofing panels should be made, and the roof laid out EXACTLY as it will be installed. This would require a layout of the roof in all dimensions. Flashings such as plumbing vents, valleys and chimney flashings should be detailed and EXACT. Divide the roof into sections. Use the aerial view of the roof as a guide to picking out your sections; note the shapes of the different sections of roof. You will have triangles, parallelograms, rectangles, squares and other odd sections. You can use basic geometry to determine each of these calculations, so figure out which geometric figures best make up each section. For example, one section may best be described as a triangle added to the end of a rectangle; thus, you will end up using equations for determining the area of a rectangle and a triangle, then adding them together to find the total area of that section of roof. The roofing panels are manufactured in assorted profiles and dimension, so use the panel width of the chosen style to layout the actual panels. This is imperative that this is done prior to the job. Measure TWICE and cut ONCE. Details are important. This will allow you to order the materials with minimal waste, and minimum cuts made on the job for the modifications. Pick the order in which you will install the metal roofing panels, and order the job with the panels UNLOADED in the order you will use them, so the LOADED order (on the truck) will be the opposite. Ready to go to work ? This will have to be presented in a broad brush approach , since every job is different. The BASIC steps are : 1. Clean the roof of debris. 2. WE cut back the asphalt shingles one foot around the perimeter of the roof. This allows room that will we need in the future . 3. Find the rafters supporting the roof from the inside. These will be on 16 inch centers once you locate the starting point...normally at the eave. 4. Mechanically attach the 1x4 furring strips to the existing rafters. We use stainless steel screws. If a thermal blanket is to be used , this is nailed into place before the furring strips.see this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giWEK-564jA 5. Mechanically attach the 1x4 furring strips around each penetration and any chimneys. These will 'box' in the penetrations with the furring strips for metal panel attachment. 6. Depending upon the type of metal roofing to be installed, you either install the first eave trim (if you are doing a standing seam metal roof) or align your first metal roofing panel SQUARE to the front fascia board. This is IMPORTANT as this sets up the rib appearance from the street.

The eave/fascia flashing is installed at this point. 7. Attach the metal roofing panels per the manufacturer's specifications 8. We ascertain the general wind direction for the area and install the panels so that the lap of the panels with be downwind. This is crucial in high wind areas. 9. Care should be used when cutting out the metal panels for penetrations and should be as tight as possible around the penetrations while maintaining the ribs square to the front fascia. 10. As progress is made, we install the boots as we go ..this saves times later. Valleys are installed prior to the metal roofing panels as here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmzzKi-nIrg 11. Be careful to follow those directions for the valleys. 12. All panels installed, we install any additional trim and flashing. The ridge vent is installed after both sides of the roof area are completed. 13. Chimney flashing is installed per the other videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfbpH3jvZU 14. Clean up and call your beer drinking buddies to see your brand new 'forever' roof. It should be noted that some states allow the homeowner up to 33% of the cost of a metal roof to be deducted as TAX CREDITS in you tax returns. Myths about metal roofing : Metal roofing is noisy when it rains...NOPE. With the proper insulation in the home/building, a metal roof is actually less noisy since you have a 'dead air' space between the metal roof and the decking. Metal roofing is expensive....NOPE...not when you consider that you install a metal roof ONCE, and over 30 years , it actually pays for itself. Metal roofing will dent in the hail...NOPE...not using the proper metal specifications. Admit that light gauge, big box store , made in Mexico panels may dent. Not ours. It is important to verify that the metal was 'Made In America and not imported. Just because the panels are rolled in a facility near to you, does NOT mean it isnt imported metal. We have found over the years, that our clients enjoy continued saving in energy consumption...some have saved over 30% on the heating/cooling cost of the home/building. Another way that metal roofing pays for itself. Most of our clients are in the south , and most notice a difference in cooling requirements even before the roof is completed. Use this as a guide since ever roof and job has it own conditions and requirements. If you need additional help . Pls call Michael at 601 750 2274. Without sounding 'pushy'.
