The Wizard of Oz Audition Packet

Welcome to Fowlerville Community Theatres March 15-17, 2013 production of The Wizard of Oz. We want this to be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Our goal is to learn new skills, have a lot of fun while doing it, and put on a great show. If you or your child plans to audition for a role in the show, you must fill out the audition form (next page), sign up for an audition time by emailing fowlervillecommunitytheatre@gmail.com, and come prepared to perform one of the songs and audition monologues provided in the packet. If you do not have email, call Diana at 517 223-9409 to set up an audition time. Before you make the decision to audition, we need to provide some participation requirements: Age requirements: Minimum age for cast members is 6 years, with one completed year of elementary education. Most lead roles will be cast as adults and teens. Children will play the roles of the Munchkins. Membership requirement: If you or your child is cast in the show, you must become a member of Fowlerville Community Theatre. Adult memberships are $20.00. Youth memberships (age 17 and under) are $10.00. There is a family limit of $55.00. Memberships remain active for one year. Show Fee: Musical productions such as The Wizard of Oz are very expensive to produce. Costumes, props, scenic drops, make-up, licensing fees, PAC rental fees, etc. run into the thousands of dollars. In an effort to curb some of the costs, we ask each cast member to pay a show fee of $15.00. There is a family limit of $25.00. A production of this kind relies on the willingness of cast members, parents, and friends to volunteer their special skills. All cast members (and parents of young cast members) will be asked to help in some way. After reviewing the audition packet, please contact Diana via email or phone if you have any questions.

All males will read the audition monologue for Scarecrow and, if asked, Tinman. It helps if these monologues are memorized, but it is not required. All children will read the audition monologue for Munchkin I and, if asked, Munchkin II. Parents need to go over these monologues with their children before the audition. Munchkin I should be memorized if possible. Those auditioning for specific parts should be prepared to read the monologues provided below:

Munchkin I: We thank you very sweetly for doing it so neatly. Youve killed her so completely, that we thank you very sweetly. Let the joyous news be spread! The wicked old witch at last is dead! Munchkin II: The house began to pitch. The kitchen took a slich. It landed on the Wicked Witch in the middle of a ditch, Which was not a happy situation for the Wicked Witch!

Dorothy I: Aunt Em! Aunt Em! Just listen to what Miss Gulch did to Toto. Aunt Em, she hit him and . . . Oh, but Aunt Em, Miss Gulch hit Toto right over the back with a rake just because she says he gets into her garden and chases her nasty old cat. But he doesnt do it every day, just once or twice a week, and he cant catch her old cat anyway. Now she says shes going to get the sheriff and . . .

Dorothy II: Follow the yellow brick road. Follow the yellow brick road. Now which was do we go? Thats funny. Wasnt he pointing the other way? Dont be silly, Toto, scarecrows dont talk. Why, you did say something. Are you doing that on purpose or cant you make up your mind? You havent got a brain? How can you talk if you havent got a brain? Dorothy III: But it wasnt a dream. It was a place. And you and you and you . . . and you were there. But you couldnt have been, could you? No, Aunt Em, this was a real truly live place, and I remember some of it wasnt very nice, but most of it was beautiful but just the same, all I kept saying to everybody was, I want to go home, and they sent me home! Home. And, this is my room, and youre all here, and Im not going to leave here ever, ever again. Because I love you all. And . . . Oh, Auntie Em! Theres no place like home? Aunt Em/Glinda:

Aunt Em: Almira Gulch, just because you own half the county doesnt mean you have the power to run the rest of us! For 23 years Ive been dying to tell you what I thought of you! And now... well, being a Christian woman, I can't say it! Glinda: Are you a good witch or a bad witch? Or, is that the witch? Well, Im a little muddled. The Munchkins called me because a new witch has dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the East. Theres the house, and here you are, and thats all thats left of the Wicked Witch of the East. And, so, what the Munchkins want to know is, are you a good witch or a bad witch?

Miss Gulch/Witch

Miss Gulch: (The part of Uncle Henry will be read by a casting director.)
Uncle Henry Gale: Well, howdy, Miss Gulch. Miss Gulch: I want to see you and your wife right away about Dorothy! Uncle Henry Gale: Dorothy? Well, what has Dorothy done? Miss Gulch: What she's done? I'm all but lame from the bite on my leg! Uncle Henry Gale: Oh! You mean she bit you? Miss Gulch: No, her dog! Uncle Henry Gale: Oh, she bit her dog, eh? Miss Gulch: No! Witch I: Who killed my sister? Who killed the Wicked Witch of the East? Was it you? It was an accident, you say? You didnt mean to kill anyone. Well, my pretty, I can cause accidents too. The ruby slippers, where are they? What have you done with them? Give them back to me or Ill . . . Give me back my slippers. Im the only one who knows how to use them. Give them back to me. Give them back!

Witch II: Well! Ring around the rosy, a pocket full of spears. Thought youd be
pretty foxy, didnt ya? Well, the last to go will see the first three go before her! And her mangy little dog, too. How about a little fire, Scarecrow? (Dorothy throws water on the witch) You cursed brat! Look what youve done! Im melting! Melting! Oh, what a world, what a world! Who would have thought that some little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness. No! No! Im going. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Uncle Henry/Emerald City Guard (The part of Miss Gulch will be read by a casting
director.)

Uncle Henry: Uncle Henry: Well, howdy, Miss Gulch. Miss Gulch: [comes into the Gales' yard] I want to see you and your wife right away about Dorothy! Emerald City Guard: (The parts of Dorothy & friends will be read by a casting director) Guard: Who rang that bell? Dorothy & Friends: We did! Guard: Can't you read? Scarecrow: Read what? Guard: The notice! Dorothy: What notice? Guard: It's on the door - as plain as the nose on my face! It oh... Dorothy & Friends: Bell out of order, please knock. [Dorothy knocks] Guard: Well, that's more like it! Now, state your business! Dorothy: We want to see the Wizard! Guardian [gasps] The Wizard? But nobody can see the Great Oz! Nobody's ever seen the Great Oz! Even I've never seen him! Dorothy: Well, then how do you know there is one? Guard: Oh, you're wasting my time!
[Guardian hangs the notice and goes back inside]

Scarecrow I: Pardon me, that way is a very nice way. Its pleasant down that way, too. Am I confusing you on purpose? Of course not. You see, I cant make up my mind because I havent got a brain, only straw. How can I talk if I havent got a brain? Hmmm, well some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, dont they? Scarecrow II: Witch? Huh! Im not afraid of a witch! Im not afraid of anything . . . oh, except a lighted match. But Id face a whole box full of them for the chance of getting some brains. Look I wont be any trouble because I dont eat a thing, and I wont try to manage things because I cant think. Wont you take me with you? Scarecrow III: The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side. Oh joy! Rapture! I got a brain! How can I ever thank you enough?

Tinman I: Oil can. My mouth. The other side. My, my, my goodness. I can talk again! Oil my arms, please. Oil my elbows. It feels wonderful. Ive held that axe up for ages. It was about a year ago that I was chopping that tree and suddenly it began to rain. Right in the middle of a chip I rusted solid. Tinman II: Well, when I was flesh and blood like you, I fell in love with a Munchkin maiden whose mother hated me. So, to stop me from marrying her daughter, she hired the Wicked Witch of the West to put an evil spell on my axe. When I tried to chop down a tree, it chopped off my leg instead. But by good fortune, I knew a wonderful tinsmith, and he made me a new leg almost as good as the old one. So back I went to work, and you know what happened? I swung my axe again, and dang me if it didnt take off the other leg. Lion I: Roooaaarr! Put em up, put em up! Which one of ya first? Ill fight ya both together if you want. Ill fight ya with one paw tied behind my back. Ill fight ya standing on one foot. Ill fight ya with my eyes closed. Oh, pulling an ax on me, eh? Sneaking up on me, eh? Why ruff, ruff! Lion II: Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage! What makes the dawn come up like thunder? Courage! What makes the Hottentot so hot? What puts the "ape" in apricot? What have they got that I ain't got? Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman: Courage! Cowardly Lion: You can say that again! Huh?

Professor Marvel/ The Wizard

Professor Marvel: Well, well, well! House guest, huh? Ha Ha Ha Ha. And who might you be? No, no, now dont tell me. Youre traveling in disguise. No, thats not right. I . . . Youre . . . youre going on a visit. No, Im wrong. Youre . . . running away. They . . . dont understand you at home. They dont appreciate you. You want to see other lands, big cities, big mountains, big oceans. Ha ha! The Wizard: Come forward. I am Oz, the great and powerful. Who are you? WHO are YOU! Silence! The great and powerful Oz knows why youve come. Tinman, step forward. You dare come to me for a heart, do you? You clinking, clanking, clattering, collection of caliginous junk.
