How did 'I Do Bidoobidoo' affect Filipino viewership?

Potential Antidote Against Alienation' Sa hinaba-haba ng prusisyon, sa simbahan rin and tuloy, said Vicky to Nick's father at their lunch in the Fuentabella's mansion. The match using salawikain among the characters during Rock's family's pamamanhikan was one of the most remarkable scenes in the movie 'I Do Bidoobidoo' directed by Chris Martinez. It was one of the very few population of full-length musical films in the country's cinema industry. Many had positively commented on the how the movie achieve using APO Hiking Society's songs ang making a whole movie out of it. Also, it had relayed to its audience an important issue that every citizen should be concerned. I Do Bidoobidoo narrated the story of Rock and Tracey whose deep love for each other have blessed them a baby at an early age. Their love and decision to marry caught in a dispute between each others' families, mainly because of the difference in their economic status and principles governing their lives. The parents kept on making the teens understand that the complexity of the life they were about to enter was something they wouldn't be able to handle well due to their young age. On the other hand, the teens expressed their desire to have freedom on deciding for themselves. Soon enough, Rock and Tracey decided to elope and escape their parents' interference on their relationship. Their marriage led to the acceptance of their families and the reconciliation of their parents. It was an unusual film for lacking an antagonistic character and good vs. evil plot. It mainly focused on showing the possible reactions of families from different social status with regards to teenage marriage and pregnancy. It's plot did not need of a division between good and bad. The problem discussed was something that is crucial and receives too many personal opinions from the public. It's like watching

a confrontation of ideals and opinions outside a serious battlefield and in which the future is at stake. An example of this was the difference between the reasons of Elaine (Zsa Zsa Padilla) and Rose (Eugene Domingo) on why they oppose the union to begin with. Elaine's concern was based on experience. She had the same situation as her daughter, getting pregnant at a young age. She was forced to marry, forever binding her into a loveless relationship with her husband. On the other hand, Rose had showed her disappointment to her son because he 'wasted' the time, effort and money they had provided to finance his education. The Apo Hiking Society is considered as one of the legends in OPM. Their songs touched the hearts of Filipino listeners from different generations. They added spices to the film and helped the viewers reach the depth of the character's emotions. For instance, the song Panalangin was always used by Rock and Tracey to express their unconditional love and desire to be together. The funny yet touching scene of the best friends Rose, Vicky and Lilibeth was fueled up by Awit ng Barkada as a way for Vicky and Lilibeth of cheering up and showing their support for Rose. Finally, the dramatic dialogue between parents and children about how the marriage issue was intensified by Batang-Bata Ka Pa. I Do Bidoobidoo opened a new way of discussing issues of the country. The film served as a gateway for revival of musical films in the Philippine Cinema. Since 1960's when musical-oriented film was the leading genre of motion-pictures, there has been no successful musical film thereafter. The common genres were action, romance, fantasy, comedy, science-fiction, horror and drama. I have seen some musical movies released but were not well-publicized and wellaccepted by movie-goers. Those musical films were usually low-budgeted as the biggest film producers give importance to the common genres. Now that a rising network is one of the producers, this film's release might cause realization to bigger and more successful movie producers on the potential of musical-films. Movies having almost same plot already weaken the movie industry while the flooding of wellanticipated and well-received foreign films does not help either but rather aggrevate the situation more. But with the airing of I Do Bidoobidoo, the hope of having a High School Musical-like films wouldn't be

impossible anymore. It's something that can be enjoyed by audiences from all ages and at the same time, a way to make the public aware of our nation's current condition. Continuous production of this type of movie, but next time, of different topic would be interesting. They should try making a movie about a students who graduated because his classmates helped in funding his education or a movie version of Ang Mundong Ito ay Lupa by Edgardo M. Reyes. Lastly, it's not only for the film industry, I Do Bidoobidoo also opened a new course to empower the OPM which is now decreasing its popularity, thanks to the boom of foreign music from North America and neighboring Asian countries like Korea. The revival of Apo Hiking Society's creations, with some revisions to the tempo and melody used in big screen could be a starting point for the masses to turn their back from invading music and appreciate our own. This could invite potential song writers and artists to start a new golden era of Filipino music. We should not need extreme spirit of nationalistic spirit and will to honor our own music. It should become a Filipino's nature. It is a responsibility. I am waiting to see another musical-film in the future where in the songs will be orginally composed just like in High School Musical. If ever, I would be willing to buy a ticket for 3D watching. I Do Bidoobidoo offered a creative method of discussing the important topics in our society. It presented a possible antidote to the recent illnesses that weakens our industries. It's not just your typical musical film about teenage love. It's about teenage pregnancy and marriage. It taught us the importance of good communication and relationship among family members. I congratulate Chris Martinez and the production team for this one of a kind film that could be a potential cure to alienation.
